Another year is about to end, and I guess It's now time to leave 2011 and It's memories. YUP!! This is my last blogpost for this year.....HELLO 2012!! This coming year is another Leap Year so It will be my Blog's 2nd Leap Year in the Blogosphere. MORE SURPRISE BLOGPOSTS this upcoming year that I'll try to create in my free time. Interesting Blogpost Header Photo? YUP!! Some bits of my collection again for viewing. It has been a very busy and successful year 2011 for me and I'm really looking forward to 2012 and what lies ahead. I thank the LORD for all the blessings he had given me and my family this year 2011 and always praying for a brighter year ahead. THANKS also to you guys, my Dearest Blog Readers, who once in a while still have time to visit my humble blog "The Doctor Is In". Like what I have written before my blog ever since is "OFTEN IMITATED, NEVER DUPLICATED". Hopefully these Copycats have a peaceful conscience this coming 2012. Ha Ha Ha!! GREAT YEAR for NEW WAVE CONCERTS here in MANILA and getting ready for some upcoming concerts. WHEEEW!! I do hope these Bands/Artists that are reported to be performing here in MANILA this 2012 will all push through. HAPPY NEW YEAR 2012 EVERYONE!! Be sure to be SAFE this NEW YEAR'S EVE guys!! TAKE CARE of your Upper and Lower Extremities!! MAG-INGAT sa PAPUTOK KABAYANS!!!!!!!!! MANIGONG BAGONG TAON!!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS 2011!!

It's this time of the year again when everyone is celebrating the birth of JESUS CHRIST. YUP!! Here in the PHILIPPINES, we have our very own way of celebrating CHRISTMAS and nothing beats the FILIPINO TRADITION. YUP!! Spending the holidays with Relatives, Friends, and Love Ones makes it very meaningful. Well, my little blog "The Doctor Is In" is one with the whole world in greeting everyone a very MERRY CHRISTMAS 2011!! This is my blog's 5th CHRISTMAS here in the blogosphere and hopefully we will continue to have more CHRISTMAS giving you the best CHEERS all year long. THANKS to everyone to continue to visit my blog once in a while. Hmmp? That's one kind of motivation!! That's one of my "BELEN" at home in the Blogpost Header photo together of course with my classic Rubik's Cube and my Vinyl Record of "A VERY SPECIAL CHRISTMAS". So this Yuletide Season, do spread the cheers, love, and joy to everybody. SILENT NIGHT...Sendong's wrath

The whole FILIPINO Community is grieving due to another devastating typhoon that just struck the Southern Part of my beloved country the Philippines. We had ONDOY before here in MANILA and now we have SENDONG in MINDANAO. Personally, I just can't bear seeing those photos of dead people most specifically the children. Of course, I can't post those photos here. It's a few days before CHRISTMAS 2011, then suddenly this tragedy happened only last Saturday December 17, 2011 thus the whole country is in "National State Of Calamity". My little blog "The Doctor Is In" is one with my KABAYANS in PRAYING for the victims of this catastrophe of great proportion.

"ALMIGHTY GOD, please pray for those affected by Typhoon Sendong and most especially pray for the souls of those who perished and that the survivors will have strength to cope up with this tragedy. Pray also for those who are continuing helping the victims and may you also give them endurance and courage too."

I'll leave you with one of my favorite CHRISTMAS song "SILENT NIGHT" sang by STEVIE NICKS and included in the 1987 CHRISTMAS Compilation album entitled "A VERY SPECIAL CHRISTMAS" which I have both in Vinyl Record and Cassette Tape. A simple song that would at least remind us that CHRISTMAS is around the corner and FILIPINOS are known to cope up with this kind of tragedy.

THE WILD SWANS "Bringing Home The Ashes"

THE WILD SWANS were formed back in 1980 but it was only on 1988 that the band released their very fist studio album entitled "BRINGING HOME THE ASHES". Fronted by Legendary Musician PAUL SIMPSON and a recent visitor here in the Philippines. The band had a different line up when they did a concert here in MANILA and CEBU. Definitely one of the most memorable New Wave Concerts I have ever watched the past three decades. Hmmmp? Talking about longevity right? Ha Ha Ha!! By the time "BRINGING HOME THE ASHES" was released by SIRE/REPRISE Records back in 1988, THE WILD SWANS' members were PAUL SIMPSON, JEREMY KELLY (Lotus Eaters), and JOE FEARON. YUP!! That's the trio in the Album Cover. That means that two of the members were able to visit the Philippines already since JEREMY KELLY was in MANILA together with PETER COYLE as "THE LOTUS EATERS" back in 2002. YUP!! They were here in MANILA LIVE IN CONCERT and that was also a great concert which I definitely didn't missed out. The reason why JOE FEARON was included in the line up was that GED QUINN who was also one of THE LOTUS EATERS dropped out few months before the album was completed and released. The making of the album also included session players on both keyboards and drums to add up to the unique sound. "BRINGING HOME THE ASHES" was produced by PAUL HARDIMAN and the album officially yielded two singles namely "YOUNG MANHOOD" and "BIBLE DREAMS". As I've mentioned here in my blog on my "THE WILD SWANS: PLATINUM COLLECTION" Blogpost back in APRIL 5 of this year 2011 only few days before the news of their PHILIPPINE CONCERT was revealed to me. THE WILD SWANS were first introduced here in MANILA by NU 107 back in 1988 with the song "BRINGING HOME THE ASHES". The next MANILA hit was "WHIRLPOOL HEART" which was also introduced by NU 107. Then other songs from the album keep on getting airplay from DZBM POWER 105 and of course NU 107 wherein the two singles "YOUNG MANHOOD" and "BIBLE DREAMS" then became a regular playlist. "BITTERNESS" and "ARCHANGELS" also became MANILA hits when It became part of the playlist of the Two Month College Radio Format of 99.5 RT's "RHYTHM AND ROCK" back in 1989. While "NORTHERN ENGLAND", 'MYTHICAL BEAST", and "THE WORST YEAR OF MY LIFE" became POWER 105 DZBM Hits. The one and only song from the album that really didn't have that necessary radio exposure was "NOW AND FOREVER".

Definitely, PINOY NEW WAVERS should have this album on their music collection. In my case, I bought the "BRINGING HOME THE ASHES" Album both on Vinyl Record and CD formats which is shown on the photo. The album for me is a great buy and I consider all songs as CLASSIC indeed!! The album is very much lighter than the early works of THE WILD SWANS, but the messages of the songs here are very dark and enigmatic in a way. Hmmmp? Talking about RELIGION, WAR, ANGST, and REBELLION gave the whole content of a Protagonist's Life of a Preacher I may say. The Music and Lyrics are cut above the rest with a splendid Melody that perks you up whenever you listen to the whole album.

I decided not to upload the whole album for download because all the 10 tracks were also included on the "The Wild Swans Platinum Collection" which I have already featured here on my little blog "The Doctor Is In". Btw, THE WILD SWANS performed a record SEVEN SONGS from the album on their MANILA Concert at ONE ESPLANADE last OCTOBER 1, 2011 which I think would establish how good the album is. The songs they played were "Bible Dreams", "Archangel", "Northern England", "Now and Forever", "Whirlpool Heart", "Worst Year of My Life", and of course the album's title track "Bringing Home the Ashes" which was also the song the band sang on their only Philippine T.V. appearance on EAT BULAGA which I've also featured here in my blog recently.

There was a Tribute Party given to the Late RONALD TENGSICO aka. TAZMANIAN DEVIL who was one of the Legendary DJ of POWER 105 DZBM FM back in JULY 3, 2010 which was entitled "BRINGING HOME THE ASHES" and held at NOMIXX BAR and RESTO. TAZ, THE GODFATHER of THE POWER SWITCHERS CLUB as he was called, passed away MAY 24, 2010 then was cremated. Well, as the saying goes "ASHES TO ASHES; DUST TO DUST".

I also included Two VIDEO CLIPS of THE WILD SWANS CONCERT here in MANILA shared by fellow KABAYANS just to spice up this blogpost of mine. Well, since I'm not really into taking Videos that much in Concerts because of my experience of singing along with the songs while watching, then my voice would be much louder. Ha Ha Ha!! YUP!! I was supposed to upload Videos of The Lost 80s, Gene Loves Jezebel Concerts, just to name a few since I was lucky to attend all these NEW WAVE 80s concerts here in MANILA, but that problem couldn't be solved. Ha Ha Ha!! Up until now, I still have goosebumps recalling what transpired on THE WILD SWANS Concert. WOW!! THAT WAS INDEED AN EXCELLENT CONCERT TO BE CHERISHED!! THANKS to all KABAYANS who shared these Manila Concert Video Clips. MABUHAY!!

GO WEST Live In MANILA!! YUP!! You got it right guys!! Another of our 80s Heroes are coming over to MANILA this NOVEMBER 11 & 12, 2011. So KABAYANS, I guess 2011 just turned out to be a year of NEW WAVE 80s CONCERTS. GO WEST will perform LIVE at EASTWOOD MALL OPEN PARK on NOVEMBER 11 at 7pm and at VENICE PLAZA FORT BONIFACIO on NOVEMBER 12. Hmmmp? Familiar Concert Venues Concepts? Well, that's the same venues that CHINA CRISIS Return MANILA Concert back in JANUARY of this year 2011. So get ready for another trip down memory lane.

THE GELBOYS were a Five Piece PINOY 80s Rock and Roll Band formed back in late 1985 composed of RANDY STEPHEN CONCEPCION on Vocals and Lead guitar, JOEY BAXTER CONCEPCION on Bass, ROBIN JAMES CONCEPCION on Drums, PAUL RODERICK SANTIAGO on Rhythm Guitar, and MICHAEL CONCEPCION on Keyboards all hailing from MARYKNOLL COLLEGE. YUP!! You got it right!! The College that was dominated by Females. Btw, Maryknoll is now called Miriam College. I haven't seen or read any in-depth article yet about the band on the Web and so I decided to personally pay tribute to this great PINOY Band who also made a mark back in the 80s. YUP!! THE GELBOYS exclusively here on "The Doctor Is In". I remember seeing them twice played LIVE on two of their campus tours back in 1986. They played good vibes music with a blend of 60's beat and 80's attitude melody. The band's influences were Chuck Berry, Stray Cats, John Travolta, Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, and Frank Sinatra. No doubt you could all hear the styles of these artists on all their songs. THE GELBOYS were really big back in those days especially for the so-called "Kolehiyalas" (College Ladies) since they project good looks accompanied with good grooming if you talk about hair style and their outfits. Btw, they also have a Catchy Band name that everyone cannot forget. Hmmmp? Clean-cut look and of course they use GEL. That's why they're called THE GELBOYS right? I don't know if anyone of you reading this blogpost never used GEL as your Hair Medium before. Wheeew!! I guess especially the males, we really had our time using GEL back on those days. MEMORIES INDEED!! THE GELBOYS made two hit singles namely "MONDAY" and "EVERY TIME YOU SMILE AT ME". I also remember that there was a T.V. Special about the band and their story back in 1986. I just can't recall the title of the show and the corresponding Channel it was shown, but definitely I remember watching it and that was around 8pm-9pm. I wonder if anyone has a Video copy of it. That would be interesting don't you think? THE GELBOYS had their time indeed since they also had T.V appearances on Legendary Philippine Television shows such as "Oh No Its Johnny", "Penthouse Live", "GMA Supershow", "Eat Bulaga", "Student Canteen", and "That's Entertainment". After being THE GELBOYS for two successful years, they changed their name into "THE STINGRAY" and then to "1-800 BOYSVILLE", but during these times the band already loss their magic thus fading away in the Philippine Music Scene.

THE GELBOYS released their one and only album entitled "EVERY TIME YOU SMILE " back in 1986 under OCTO ARTS INTERNATIONAL which was produced by BOB GUZMAN of "THE BOYFRIENDS". I uploaded their two hit singles "MONDAY" and "EVERY TIME YOU SMILE AT ME" for you to listen and reminisce. The beat and melody of "MONDAY" is just as energetic as any energy drink. Well, in "EVERYTIME YOU SMILE AT ME", they sounded like the New Wave band "JIMMY JIMMY" who also made an impact here in the Philippines. I just love these two songs!!

Btw, he was also a member of "The Cantana Band" back in the 90s. His music career, which is his real passion, was put on hold when his busy schedule as former president of a Amelco Desiccants Inc., became demanding. But now that his brother is managing the company, Randy is back in show business for good.

DRAGON

DRAGON is a Popular Progressive New Zealand – Australian rock band that was formed in Auckland, New Zealand back in January 1972 and relocated to Sydney, Australia in May 1975. The band was lead by the Hunter Brothers namely Todd and Marc. Like any other bands, they have also gone through a lot of members revamp. Other known members were Ray Goodwin (Guitarist), Neil Reynolds (Drummer), and Paul Hewson (Keyboardist). The band's name "DRAGON" came from a consultation of I Ching cards by early band vocalist Graeme Collins. Their first major gig was an appearance at The Great Ngaruawahia Music Festival in early January 1973. DRAGON was introduced here in MANILA by WXB 102 back in 1986 with the song entitled "RAIN". It was also a massive hit on DZBM POWER 105 and it became a global hit too by reaching # 2 in the music charts. "RAIN" would be the one and only MANILA hit for this band. YUP!! That's the only song from the band that PINOY NEW WAVERS/PUNKS will be familiar with. The Hunter brothers with Todd's partner, Johanna Pigott, wrote the song "Rain". It's been raining here in MANILA for so long and It's not only rain, It's TYPHOONS!! This reminded me of the song "RAIN" and It's lyrics. Wheeew!! Even though "RAIN" was the only hit here in MANILA, DRAGON had massive success in other parts of the globe such as songs like "April Sun in Cuba" which peaked at #2 on the 1977 Australian singles chart; "Are You Old Enough?" reached #1 in 1978; and "Still in Love with You"reached #15 also in 1978.

DRAGON have endured tragedy and notoriety in their musical career with members dying from illnesses and drug/heroin overdoses. Of course, this would include the on and off reincarnation of the band that spanned almost four decades. Well, they released a lot of singles and albums in that period which proved the lasting sound of the band. No need to enumerate all of their releases because that would be too many to count if you get my drift. DRAGON even performed three songs namely "Speak No Evil", "Rain" and "Are You Old Enough?" for the Oz for Africa concert back in JULY 13, 1985 which was part of the Global LIVE AID Program which was broadcast in Australia on both Seven Network and Nine Network and of course MTV in the US.

Definitely these two Music Materials are a must-have for PINOY NEW WAVERS. YUP!! Fellow KABAYANS would be satisfied already to have the "BODY AND THE BEAT" Vinyl Record since It includes the MANILA Hit "RAIN" and with a lot of releases that the band have in their discography I personally wouldn't buy any other record from them. Why? Because the "The Very BEST Of DRAGON" CD is indeed already a treat for music lovers who would just love to listen to their other songs. I made my CD available for download just in case you are interested to have a copy and this is FOR PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY okay so I still encourage you guys to get the original materials.

THE WILD SWANS on Eat Bulaga!!

Well, can't get enough of that Nostalgic Concert by THE WILD SWANS here in Philippines? Definitely, It was one of the most memorable New Wave Concert I ever watched here in MANILA!! I have already watched a couple of these New Wave 80s concerts here in MANILA before and THE WILD SWANS Concert will be marked as One of the BEST or if not, It's THE VERY BEST indeed!! Even though there was a typhoon, their concert really made a blast like a typhoon too so THANK YOU to those people who brought them here in the Philippines where the term NEW WAVE Genre is very unique and different in terms of definition comparing from other countries around the globe. I'm featuring right now here in my little blog "The Doctor Is In", the Legendary band's performance on the Philippine Legendary Noon Time Show "EAT BULAGA" last SEPTEMBER 28, 2011. What's very interesting here was EAT BULAGA Host Julia Clarete's comments on the band and on Echo And The Bunnymen. Wheeew!! Nice One Miss Julia!! Rock On Girl!! PAUL SIMPSON also introduced his Band Line up which for me is as Legendary as this Liverpool band. Btw, EAT BULAGA just recently launched their COFFEE TABLE BOOK which featured the Three Decades of the Show. The Mastermind of this extraordinary book is Joey De Leon. THANK YOU THE WILD SWANS for a GREAT PERFORMANCE!!

Well, since It's the BER Months already and I've been hearing a lot of CHRISTMAS Songs around MANILA so I decided to feature this Pinoy Christmas Indie Compilation released back in 2009 by "Filipino Indie Pop Scene". This great compilation is entitled "Holly, Ivy And Mistletunes" and includes 12 very interesting Pinoy Indie Pop Bands based in different parts of the globe. I guess that's really a treat right? Even though this compilation was two years ago, It will always sound fresh especially Christmas comes only once a year. Like what I've written before here in my little blog Four Christmas ago, Filipinos start their Christmas Season on September 1 and that's a fact. Definitely, Christmas Songs don't grow old. X Simple Minds Live In MANILA!!

X Simple Minds? A new band? Wattaname? Well, this is minus Jim Kerr their Lead Vocalist. Let's just see how they sound like. X Simple Minds has been tried and tested in its long musical journey which started in 1977 for this band from Glasgow. From the original four members (Jim Kerr, Charlie Burchi ll, Brian McGee, and Derek Forbes) in the 70s, the current members are bassist Derek Forbes and drummer Brian McGee. A new addition to the band is Brian’s younger brother, Owen Paul McGee, who stepped in as their lead vocalist. This trio is sure to hit the right notes and get you swaying to the beat of both their new and old songs.

Catch them perform live at Eastwood Mall Open Park in Eastwood City, Quezon City on September 10 (8pm) and at Venice Piazza in McKinley Hill, Fort Bonifacio on September 11 (8pm). Check out the legendary band as they strike the right chords this September at the Megaworld Lifestyle Malls.

In anticipation of the IDENTITY CRISIS Reunion on REQUIEM's "REBEL YELL", I decided to feature again the Legendary Pinoy Gothic Band "IDENTITY CRISIS" here in my little blog "The Doctor Is In" by featuring Archived Articles of the band from 1988 to 1990 which COOL CARLA shared back in March 2006. YUP!! THANKS to COOL CARLA we can reminisce again the IDENTITY CRISIS so definitely It's another trip down memory lane "The Dr. Stirring Rhod Way". The band's reunion according to the group will also be a sort of tribute to the late "BOGS AMBROSIO" who was their Bass Player who passed away two years ago (February 9, 2009). IDENTITY CRISIS became one of the pioneering alternative bands in the Philippines which was formed back in 1986 composed of Carla Arbaya aka. "Cool Carla" on Lead Vocals, Buddy 'Boy' Arceo on Vocals, Leni Llapitan on Keyboards & Programming, Resty Cornejo on Guitars, Bogs Ambrosio on Bass, and Marvin Mendiola on Drums. Of course, every PINOY NEW WAVER/PUNK knows that they released two albums back then namely "TALE OF TWO" in 1987 and "WATER CAME RUNNING" in 1990 which I have both on Cassette Tape Formats which you can see on my archived Identity Crisis blogpost I created back in September 7, 2007. Wheew!! That's also Four Years ago!! Up until now PINOY NEW WAVERS are still hoping that these two albums will be remastered in CD Formats. That would be totally cool right KABAYANS? Are we all wishing for a falling star? One great band who was also coined back in the 80s as "The Band who's ahead of their time".

THE SCORE MAGAZINE
May-June 1988 Issue

We start off with an interesting and very colorful article of IDENTITY CRISIS on the Legendary Philippine Alternative Music Magazine "THE SCORE MAGAZINE". It's the feature on "SCORE FOCUS" entitled "NOT A CRISIS AFTER ALL". The interview was done by CRISTINA SALES and by reading it, I found the article focusing on the real Identity of IDENTITY CRISIS in terms of their music, lyrics, and their performances on gigs. When asked about the subject on drugs, the members mentioned that the band is "STRAIGHT" although they do a lot of drinking after every concert but nothing dealing on drugs.

So when asked about the influences of Cool Carla on music, definitely everyone knows that SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES top the list. Another influences she mentioned was COCTEAU TWINS, THIS MORTAL COIL, and DEAD CAN DANCE. Their compositions according to Cool Carla were heavily inspired by these bands which according to her "It's something you don't hear everyday, not too heavy nor too light". Well, I just transcribed some of the contents of the articles. Ha Ha Ha!! One great PINOY BAND that really made a mark in the PINOY UNDERGROUND Scene.

JINGLE MAGAZINE
March 1989 Issue

On this JINGLE MAGAZINE Issue back in 1989, two articles about IDENTITY CRISIS were written by BERT JR. and PSYKOKEELER. "TALE OF IDENTITY CRISIS" by Bert Jr. and "RECOGNIZING ONE'S IDENTITY" by Psykokeeler are both interesting articles which discussed about the band's humble beginnings and their "PORTABLE PLAYGROUND" Gig Series. It was written here that IDENTITY CRISIS was formed mid 1985 by both Leni Llapitan and Resty Cornejo who knew each other during their college days. Bogs Ambrosio and Marvin Mendiola were hustled in preceding the band's original male vocalist Buddy Arceo. After the band's very first Gig at TIME SQUARE, they hurled in WXB102 Jock Cool Carla to be their Lead Vocalist and the rest was history I may say. Btw, Resty was the one who came up with the band's name "IDENTITY CRISIS" due to the members different musical influences from Jazz, New Age, Classical to New Wave. Wheeew!! Definitely a crisis indeed don't you think?Well, I guess that's another transcribed article by yours truly. Ha Ha Ha!! I just love this nostalgic trip!! Btw, I just remembered Buddy mentioning on their Reunion Guesting on NU 107's "BALLAD OF THE TIMES" last year 2010 that he still have a copy of the band's early gig minus Cool Carla when he was still the lead vocalist of the band on Betamax Tape. Hmmp? That would be a great video clip to watch and hoping he could share it to all of us.

PLATINUM SONG MAG
July 1990 Issue

This last article of IDENTITY CRISIS I'm featuring right now was taken from the "PLATINUM MAG" which was written by DIDITH GONZALES and it focused on the band's feelings just before any performances and gigs. The author expressed her great admiration of the band and mentioned seeing them performed at a place called "CLUB A." and loves their song "IMAGINING OKTOBER". According to the members, IDENTITY CRISIS is a combination of both work and play so when It becomes work then the fun's over. I guess that's my last transcribed article for today's blogpost.

FOUR YEARS of DOCMUZIC!!

Hello Everyone!! It's this time of the year again when my dearest blog "The Doctor Is In" celebrates it's Birthday. YUP!! Today is my little blog's 4th Year Anniversary and time flies so fast indeed that you just think of how life goes by. It's DocMuzic's 4th Birthday!! I haven't blog that much the past couple of months but definitely I'm happy to be back in the blogsphere trying to dish out the Original and Real Scores of Music and anything under the sun. Wheeew!! A lot have changed since the day I created this blog Four Years ago and It's really great to have this blog of mine existed and survived the test of time even though with a lot of concept copycats all around the web. Good thing the essence of just creating original blogposts is still in my craft which I'll continue as long as I'm motivated and of course not very busy in my own personal life. THANK GOD that in my free time I can still look upon the vast and rich history of DocMuzic especially my archives which always makes me smile. It's a sort of Diary of the past Four Years of what I've placed here in my blog as creative entries which up until now I'm still proud of. Supporters may Come and Go but my drive to create blogposts with a touch of excellence will always remain in my heart as long as there are still visitors or even silent supporters coming in. YUP!! I still see some movements on my blog's traffic so that's a good sign that there are still people who visits the blog. Do check out my Blog Labels (Information Society) entitled "ANNIVERSARY" in the right lower corner of my site and you'll see all my Blog's Birthday Blogposts for the past Four Years. See what I mean? KUDOS LOVE EIGHTIES aka. KL80s is an ultimate six piece PINOY 80's Tribute Band playing music from 80s pop, love songs, dance hits, synth-pop to new wave composed of RICHARD SOTO on Lead Vocals/Guitar/ Percussion, YOHAN on Guitars/Synth/ Vocals, MARC on Drums/Percussion, RALPH on Bass/Vocals, JOMAR on Keyboards/Vocals, and MELAI KATSUMI on Vocals. KUDOS LOVES EIGHTIES plays the music of The Police, Mike Francis, Boomtown Rats, New Order, Violent Femmes, Big Country, and of course The Wild Swans just to name a few. Definitely 80s as the band name stands for. Since these guys will play on REQUIEM's REBEL YELL and will also be the front act on THE WILD SWANS Philippine Concert then I thought of featuring them here in my little blog "The Doctor Is In". I already saw them perform LIVE and definitely I have to say they really play good music and they know their craft very well. I guess the only thing we have to anticipate from this band is an all Original Album which I think would be very interesting. One of the hottest bands indeed right now if you talk about gigs regarding Retro. RICHARD has a great voice and the female vocals of MELAI just adds up to the variety of music that this band can perform. So if you're into 80s music then do check them out KABAYANS so that you'll know what I'm talking about and experience a different type of time travel.

Remembering TEDDY DIAZ

It was 23 years ago AUGUST 21, 1988 when the Philippine Music Industry and PINOY NEW WAVERS/PUNKS were shocked by the news that the guitarist and founder of PINOY ROCK/NEW WAVE BAND "THE DAWN" TEDDY DIAZ was stabbed to death while on his way to his girlfriend's driveway on a dimly-lit Agno St. in Tatalon, Quezon City coming from a live guesting of THE DAWN at "Martin After Dark" hosted by Martin Nievera. It was a sad day indeed since THE DAWN was just becoming the #1 band in the Philippines back then. Well, this is just "The Dr. Stirring Rhod Way" of remembering the late Teodoro de Villa Diaz aka. Teddy Diaz , son of Filipino actor Vic Diaz of Sampaguita Pictures fame, who was born on April Fools' Day. Teddy Diaz spent both grade school and high school at Ateneo de Manila University and after graduating from high school he then enrolled at the University of the Philippines as an architecture student and stayed there for three years. He transferred to the Philippine Women's University after his third year in UP and took up music with guitar as his major. Teddy was also gifted with a talent in drawing and would spend time with Fine Arts students in PWU and would draw comic book characters and different electric guitar designs for relaxation. Hmmp? That's what you call great talent right? Just a proof of his willingness to improve his craft. Recently, THE DAWN just celebrated their 25th Anniversary and with this comes a Tribute Compilation CD for the band wherein 15 Pinoy Alternative Acts played their own renditions of 15 songs from the band. I'll feature this CD compilation too here in my blog "The Doctor Is In" in the future. There was also a T.V. special on "I-Witnesss" on GMA 7 hosted by Jay Taruc entitled "SALAMAT TEDDY" back in 2008 which I found very comprehensive review on the life of Teddy Diaz. I just do hope that GMA 7 would make this available on DVD package like some of their "I-Witness" episodes. That would be a cool material for every collectors like me. Btw KABAYANS, better also have a copy of "TULAD NG DATI" DVD because it's also very interesting. I definitely like the concept of the film.

"TED REMEMBERED: The Day The Music Died" was an article written by Manny Pagsuyuin aka. PAGZ and better known as DJ JIMMY JAM back in 1988 which was few weeks after the death of Teddy Diaz. The article was featured on a small student newspaper called "ISTUDYANTE". Well, it was a great piece of history I may say wherein Pagz wrote about his views and personal memories of Teddy Diaz as a Friend which he stated "Many people knew of him, but very few knew him." YUP!! Pagz knew Teddy well and his death really affected him too.

VINYL RECORDS still RULES!!

There is a resurgence of Vinyl Records last year 2010 and up to now so definitely collectors like me are very PROUD of these things. YUP!! VINYL still RULES!! So if you have no VINYL RECORDS on your music collection and worst you don't have a working TURNTABLE to use for your dusty records then you really lack something. Whatever the situation is, the sound of Vinyl brings back TRUE NOSTALGIA even though I have CDs in my music collection. Getting the ORIGINAL MATERIALS are still the best thing to do nowadays especially when mp3s and music files are all over the web and some sites even post things they don't personally have. So here it goes, another tribute of mine about VINYL RECORDS. Getting ready for my blog's FOURTH YEAR ANNIVERSARY!! YUP!! "The Doctor Is In" is turning 4 years old anytime and we will continue blogging on my free time. Of course, a little motivation would help don't you think? Ha Ha Ha!!

THE SMITHS "Singles"

THE SMITHS were an English New Wave band formed in Manchester back in 1982 composed of STEVEN PATRICK MORRISSEY aka. "MORRISSEY" on vocals, JOHN MAHER aka. "JOHNNY MARR" on guitar, ANDY ROURKE on bass, and MIKE JOYCE on drums. Definitely,every PINOY NEW WAVER knows the name of all these guys. THE SMITHS was formed basically based on the songwriting partnership of Morrissey and Marr. John Maher changed his name to Johnny Marr to avoid confusion with Buzzcocks drummer John Maher while Morrissey performed solely only under his surname and he his also known as "MOZ". Critics have branded them the most important alternative rock band to emerge from the British independent music scene of the 1980s. In the autumn of 1982, the duo of Morrissey and Marr recruited drummer Mike Joyce who has been a member of punk bands "The Hoax" and "Victim" as well as bass player Dale Hibbert who also provided the group with demo recording facilities at the studio where he worked as a recording engineer. However after one gig, Andy Rourke who was a good friend of Marr replaced Hibbert on bass because Marr felt that neither Hibbert's bass playing nor his personality fit in with the group thus this Legendary Line-up of MOZ, MARR, JOYCE, and ROURKE was finally set to invade the Indie Scene of British Music and even made waves here in MANILA. The group were signed to the famous independent ROUGH TRADE record label for whom they released four studio albums and several compilations as well as numerous non-LP singles. Although THE SMITHS had limited commercial success outside the UK while they were still together and never released a single that charted higher than number 10 in their home country, the band won a growing cult following around the globe. The band broke up in 1987 and have turned down several offers to reunite since then.

THE SMITHS were first introduced here in MANILA by WXB 102 back in 1985 by playing their classic song "THIS CHARMING MAN". It was the very first song I've heard from the band. Of course POWER 105 DZBM wasn't behind that much because they immediately played most of the songs of THE SMITHS' "MEAT IS MURDER" album. The very first song I heard from THE SMITHS at POWER 105 was "WELL I WONDER" and It became a so-called POWER EXCLUSIVE back then. More THE SMITHS songs were played by both XB and BM and it just became a sort of "who will play this SMITHS song first" thing. YUP!! from the obscure ones like "REEL AROUND THE FOUNTAIN" and "PRETTY GIRLS MAKE GRAVES" up to their singles like "WILLIAM IT WAS REALLY NOTHING", "THE BOY WITH THORN ON HIS SIDE", "THERE'S A LIGHT THAT NEVER GOES OUT", "PANIC", and "ASK" just to name a few. When WXB 102 played "HEAVEN KNOWS I'M MISERABLE NOW", other Pop Radio Stations played it too like 93.9 WKC and 97.1 WLS and became the most popular song of THE SMITHS here in MANILA if you're talking about the common people since this song invaded other pop stations aside from WKC and WLS. Actually, a lot of THE SMITHS songs from their albums were played on XB and BM which made the band very popular among PINOY NEW WAVERS. By the time their album "STRANGE WAYS HERE WE COME" finally arrive in MANILA's airwaves then it was the turn of NU 107 to bring on THE SMITHS new and fresh songs on air on late 1987 and early 1988. YUP!! XB was gone and BM was just about to return their New Wave Greatness while NU was on it's way to the top. NU 107 introduced "GIRLFRIEND IN A COMA", "I STARTED SOMETHING I COULDN'T FINISH" and would you believe made a non-single a hit which was "WORK IS A FOUR LETTER WORD". Well, I didn't mention all THE SMITHS songs that made it to XB,BM, and NU because that's too many to enumerate okay.

"THE SMITHS: Singles" is an 18-Track compilation CD which was released back in 1995 by WEA RECORDS that included the band's well loved singles that they released back in the 80s. This CD became more popular than The Best Of The Smiths I & II and considered an addition to every The Smiths catalog. A must-have for every "THE SMITHS" fan and of course PINOY NEW WAVERS which I didn't missed out buying the original copy. The packaging of the CD was also great since it has all the photos of the 18 singles in a complete fold-up page which included the names of the models of the art covers from every singles. It also included photos of THE SMITHS album from their entire music career. I included the photos of those pages in the inlet of the CD here in my special "THE SMITHS" blogpost so that you will see how interesting the packaging of the CD was. For this exclusive "The Doctor Is In" "THE SMITHS" blogpost I decided to place all photos of their singles and included the names of the models on the corresponding artwork covers and what New Wave Radio Station played it first here in MANILA. YUP!! This is to spice up this THE SMITHS feature of mine. You will also notice that there are two covers for "WILLIAM IT WAS REALLY NOTHING" because the original artwork which came from an early 80s advertisement for A.D.S. speakers wherein the speaker was the object on the bed had legal problems and so later pressings were produced with new artwork wherein Billie Whitelaw was the model. This arrangement of course is "The Dr. Stirring Rhod Way" again!! I made my CD available for download just in case you are interested even though I know most of you guys have a lot of THE SMITHS songs already. I still encourage everyone to support the original Music Formats be it Vinyl Records or Compact Discs and don't just be contented to have the so-called "mp3 collection" which is not a REAL Music Collection however which way it's brag about. Shortly after the release of "Strangeways Here We Come", THE SMITHS were the subject of a documentary in LWT's arts strand The South Bank Show, broadcast on ITV back in October 1987. Following the group's demise, Morrissey began to pursue a solo recording career and his very first solo album was entitled "VIVA HATE" which was a reference to the end of THE SMITHS. I will also feature that U.K. # 1 album also here in my blog so stay tune. MORRISSEY actually released a lot of albums as a Solo Artist and there were some sectors who were encouraging the guys to have THE SMITHS Reunion with a large amount of money involve but there seem no chance for that to happen. There were even Court Cases that involved the splitting of Royalties which really made it very impossible for that reunion.

MABUHAY KA Emmanuel D. Pacquiao popularly known as MANNY "PACMAN" PACQUIAO!! YUP!! It's KABAYAN Manny Pacquiao's win over Sugar Shame este Shane Mosley via unanimous decision with the judges scoring the bout at 119-108, 120-108, 120-107 all in favor of the Filipino Boxing Icon. Definitely, another way of being "PROUD TO BE PINOY" thing!! This will be a 6th blogpost of MANNY PACQUIAO here on "The Doctor Is In". Hindi lang Pang-Music, Pang-Sports pa!! KAILANGAN PA BANG I-MEMORIZE YAN!! Ha Ha Ha!! Another achievement for Manny who is now considered as the First Billionaire in the Philippine House Of Congress, Huh? KABAYANS do you believe that? Personally, Manny is the First Honest Income Billionaire Congressman in the Philippines since every KABAYANS knows that there are more of this Billionaire thing in Congress that got it from CORRUPTION and that doesn't include our great boxing icon since Manny earned everything the good and proper way. Everyone is not blind. He He He!! Pacquiao no doubt dominated the fight as Mosley refused to attack him throughout the fight. What a Shame for Mosley and there's no more Sugar okay!! Pacquiao definitely outclassed Mosley!! PACMAN wore his yellow gloves as a symbol of unity and fight for poverty here in the Philippines which is still very much present. Nice advocacy indeed!! It was also nice seeing another popular KABAYAN singing the Philippine National Anthem with grace and perfection, and she's none other than CHARICE PEMPENGCO. No criticism this time since she sang it the way it should be sang with no alteration whatsoever.

Manny Pacquiao delivered a solid left punch from his own combination which made Shane Mosley saw stars and dropped down the ring on Round 3. A push by Sugar Shane on the 10th round made Pacman really angry with the referee because he was counted down but Mosley just went on avoiding Pacman's punches. YUP!! He's like a chicken running without the head. Manny is now considered "THE DESTROYER" since he really destroyed everyone on path and of course destroying the boxing careers of his opponents. So what's next? I guess FLOYD "The Chicken" MAYWEATHER is really afraid to face Pacquiao because Manny will surely destroy his Undefeated Clean Slate and Manny will also destroy his career. CONGRATULATIONS MANNY PACQUIAO!! You made the whole FILIPINO COMMUNITY again "PROUD TO BE PINOY"!!

Pet Shop Boys "Discography"

PET SHOP BOYS are an English electronic dance music duo formed back in 1981 consisting of NEIL TENNANT on vocals, keyboards and guitar, and CHRIS LOWE on keyboards. PET SHOP BOYS are listed as the most successful duo in UK music history by The Guinness Book of World Records and one of the world's best-selling music artists since they have sold over 100 million records worldwide. Wheew!! That's a lot I may say!! This Three-time BRIT Award winners and six-time Grammy nominees since 1986 have achieved 42 Top 30 singles and 22 Top 10 hits in the UK Singles Chart, including four Number Ones namely "West End Girls", "It's a Sin", "Always on My Mind" and "Heart". This duo will always be remembered by PINOY NEW WAVERS so that's why I'm featuring their 1991 Compilation entitled "DISCOGRAPHY: The Complete Singles Collection". Everything started when Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe met in an electronics shop on Kings Road in Chelsea, London back in August 1981 then the two called themselves "West End" because of their love of London's West End and later they came up with the name "Pet Shop Boys" which they derived from friends of theirs who worked in a pet shop in Ealing. Their big break came in August 1983, when Tennant was assigned by Smash Hits to interview The Police in New York where they met producer Bobby Orlando aka. Bobby 'O' who helped them released the original 1984 version of "West End Girls" and the rest we can say was history. Up until now the duo still make music and last 2009 BRIT Awards the "Pet Shop Boys" received an award for Outstanding Contribution to Music.

PET SHOP BOYS were first introduced here in MANILA by WXB 102 back in 1986 by playing their #1 Worldwide hit single "WEST END GIRLS". I remember hearing "WEST END GIRLS" first on an evening radio show when DJ Cool Carla was on-deck and I even smiled at the band's name. Pet Shop Boys? Hmmmp? I immediately like the song and exactly one week after WXB 102 played the song, the Music Video start invading Manila's Television via Music Video Programs which made me even like the song more. I then went to the nearest record bar to ask if there's already a local release of the song, the album was not yet available but there was already a 45 single and so I bought the 7 inch coming from my little savings I have then happily went home playing the record to my delight. Just imagine It cost me 10 bucks back then and that means a great minus for my merienda. Ha Ha Ha!! Those were the good ol' days indeed!! The hits came on pouring via WXB 102 with "OPPORTUNITIES", "SUBURBIA", and lot more from the "PLEASE" album which I also bought on Vinyl Record. Their songs also went to Manila's Pop radio stations which of course PINOY NEW WAVERS doesn't want to happen but we just can't prevent it because their music was really good. POWER 105 DZBM was also vital in playing other PET SHOP BOYS songs and they were the first one who played "IT'S A SIN" and considered the song as a "POWER EXCLUSIVE" which was heavily rotated by the Dynamic Duo of "HARRY NOLAN" and the late "TAZMANIAN DEVIL" few months after WXB 102 went off the air back in 1987. YUP!! I remember these times wherein NU 107 was not yet on the radio and POWER 105 was mixing Pop and New Wave because they left the New Wave Genre on late 1986 and came back to New Wave format a month after NU 107 went test broadcast . MEMORIES INDEED!! By the time NU 107 went on Test Broadcast, that's when the new batch of PET SHOP BOYS songs were introduced and even overplayed like "RENT", "WHAT I HAVE DONE TO DESERVE THIS", and "HEART" which were all on their "ACTUALLY" album. Aside from the hit songs I have mentioned from the band, the three radio stations namely XB, BM, NU of course played other PET SHOP BOYS songs which I didn't anymore elaborate since I'll try featuring their albums too here on "The Doctor Is In". Btw, all songs I've mentioned are included in the Discography compilation that I'm featuring right now.

PET SHOP BOYS "Discography: The Complete Singles Collection" was the first ever compilation of Pet Shop Boys' Singles released back in 1991 collecting the 7" versions of all of the boy's first 18 singles on one disc in chronological order. Definitely, a terrific CD for you guys who love their music especially their 80s works. I first bought the Cassette tape which became overplayed then finally decided to buy the CD too. YUP!! That's my cassette tape and CD on the photo which still looks very mint. He He He!!I also love the packaging of both music formats be it CD or tape because it comes with the album folds out to show a chart that includes information about all the songs which also included pictures of the single covers of each of them. It also included how the singles peak in the UK chart position. A great overview of their materials indeed and a mus have for every PINOY NEW WAVERS too. The Pet Shop Boys wit, creativeness, and irony that comes along with Neal Tennant's excellent voice made a perfect combination of some of the best pop songs of the 80's. So where would the 80s have been without them? I made my CD available for download just in case you wanna have a copy, but I still encourage you to buy the original stuff because this is for promotional use only and for your listening pleasure. Definitely, I don't consider the so-called "mp3 collection" as a REAL Collection and so please do support the Real and Original Formats. ENJOY THE MUZIC!!

THE CURE "Killing An Arab"

"KILLING AN ARAB" was the first single by THE CURE which was recorded at the same time as their first LP in the UK was released back in 1979 entitled "Three Imaginary Boys" but was not included on the said album. The song was included on the band's first US album entitled"Boys Don't Cry" back in 1980. YUP!! That's the photo of The Three Imaginary Boys of THE CURE which was the first ever line-up composed of ROBERT SMITH on Vocals, MICHAEL "Mick" DEMPSEY on Guitar, and LAURENCE "Lol" TOLHURST on Percussion. "Killing An Arab" was first played here in MANILA by WXB 102 back in 1985 and became very popular among PINOY NEW WAVERS/PUNKS back then. According to The Cure's lead vocalist/songwriter ROBERT SMITH, "Killing An Arab" was a short poetic attempt at condensing his impression of the key moments in the book by ALBERT CAMUS entitled "L'Étranger (The Stranger)". A song with a very controversial lyrics indeed!! The lyrics describe a shooting on a beach in which the Arab of the title was killed by the song's narrator. In the book written by Camus, the protagonist name Meursault shoots an Arab on a beach overwhelmed by his surroundings and was condemned for his honesty about his feelings and was considered as a stranger because "he refuses to lie" and "doesn't play the game". Interesting isn't it? I guess this blogpost of mine is just going with the times as always. Personally, I love the beat of "Killing An Arab" and every PINOY NEW WAVER I bet knows the complete lyrics of this very short song by ROBERT SMITH and the rest of THE CURE.

Well, the latest news of Al Quida leader Osama Bin Laden's death have made a great impact on how terrorism and justice define today's norms. All of us remember the tragic 9/11 act of terrorism which definitely went beyond what everyone can imagine. That's the crashing of two planes on the WORLD TRADE CENTER back in March 2001 that killed thousands. That's 10 years ago and now justice was served.

The United States of America under the leadership of President Barack Obama led the operations in Pakistan that killed Bin Laden. For a lot of people and especially those families of the victims, It's a great victory. Definitely terrorism doesn't end here and all of us should still be vigilant.

ROCK AND HYDE was the Canadian New Wave duo from Vancouver, British Columbia formed back in 1987 after the demise of THE PAYOLAS composed of BOB ROCK and PAUL HYDE. Although considered as a side project of The Payolas, ROCK AND HYDE remained their identity minus two Payolas members namely Chris Taylor and Alex Boynton. After the breakup of The Payolas in 1986, Bob Rock and fellow Payolas member Paul Hyde continued to write songs together under the name Rock and Hyde which is definitely not related to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Obviously, the name was taken from both their surnames. ROCK AND HYDE was introduced here in MANILA by NU 107 back in 1988 by playing their classic song "DIRTY WATER". This is the one and only hit of the band here in MANILA and considered by PINOY NEW WAVERS as their trademark song. This song was included on the band's one-and-only album "UNDER THE VOLCANO" that included catchy hooks, clean production and superb AOR sensibilities throughout. Lately, there are three well-known Volcanoes here in the Philippines which are simultaneously giving signs of activity and these are Mt. Mayon. Mt. Bulusan, and Mt. Taal. According to PHILVOCS this never happened before. That's why this blogpost of mine was born. Any relation for the recent worldwide catastrophe? Naaah!! We will just have to keep the faith. Interesting isn't it? He He He!! "DIRTY WATER" was included on the Legendary Philippine New Wave Vinyl Compilation entitled "BRAVE MUSIC FOR A NEW WORLD". It was on the First Volume of that Two Volume Compilation Series which I will still feature here on "The Doctor Is In" in the future. YUP!! I have both Volumes One and Two in my Modest Music Collection. A&M tried to catch up with the duo's EMI success by immediately offering forth a greatest hits package called "Between a Rock & a Hyde Place" which was a compilation that didn't include any Rock and Hyde recordings but only A&M-era recordings the band had released under the name Payolas or Paul Hyde and the Payolas.

ROCK AND HYDE released their one and only album "UNDER THE VOLCANO" back in late 1987 and included the US hit "DIRTY WATER" and two more songs that became popular in CANADA and these were "I WILL" and "TALK TO ME". For those PINOY NEW WAVERS who love collecting bands and music from the New Wave Era that made it on the radio airwaves here in MANILA aside from the obscure stuffs then definitely this album is a must-have too. That's my Vinyl Record on the photo!! "Under the Volcano" is a 10-Track album which was critically well-received and their song “Dirty Water” even charted on the U.S. Hot 100. Although the duo of Bob Rock and Paul Hyde wrote the album, Taylor and Boynton were also featured thus making it a Payolas' record without the actual band name of "The Payolas". There were guest appearances also by Howie Vickers (formerly of Chilliwack), Bruce Fairbairn and John Webster(formerly with Red Rider). Personally, I find the album interesting with a blend of Pop Rock influence. If you're interested in The Payolas then you also have to get the Rock And Hyde album. Btw. I will also feature THE PAYOLAS here in blog so just stay tune.

AZTEC CAMERA "The Best Of"

AZTEC CAMERA were a Scottish New Wave band from Glasgow which was formed back in 1980 and led by guitarist/vocalist/songwriter RODDY FRAME. The band's line have constantly change throughout their musical career and basically RODDY FRAME was the one and constant member of band. Founding members included CAMPBELL OWEN on Bass and DAVE MULHOLLAN on Drums while CRAIG GANNON and ROB CREMONA joined them from 1983 to 1984. Formerly guitarist of Josef K and Orange Juice MALCOLM ROSS on the other-hand joined the band back in 1984.Roddy Frame was the only de facto member of the band by the time Aztec Camera's Third Album "LOVE" was released in 1987 wherein future albums of the band credited to Aztec Camera were actually performed by Frame and studio musicians hired on a track-by-track basis. So when you say AZTEC CAMERA...It pertains to RODDY FRAME. Here's "The Dr. Stirring Way" of remembering the band that also made a mark for PINOY NEW WAVERS here in MANILA which was generally considered to be born out of the New Wave movement by featuring their compilation"The Best Of Aztec Camera".YUP!! A great band that revolutionized guitar pop. AZTEC CAMERA was first introduced here in MANILA by WXB 102 back in 1985 by playing "WALK OUT TO WINTER" which is still considered the most popular song from the band among PINOY NEW WAVERS. The second MANILA hit would be "OBLIVIOUS" then it was followed by a lot of their songs from "HIGH LAND, HARD RAIN" and "KNIFE" albums wherein both WXB 102 and POWER 105 DZBM included in their playlist back in the 80s. By the time their "LOVE" album came to the radio airwaves it was NU 107's turn to spin the new material by late 1987 by including "SOMEWHERE IN MY HEART" on their Test broadcast. I'll get through the specific details on all their songs when I feature their albums here in "The Doctor Is In".

AZTEC CAMERA first appeared on a Glasgow cassette-only compilation of local unsigned bands via PUNGENT RECORDS. Wheeew!! What a name!! This record label was affiliated with the Fumes Fanzine run by Danny Easson and John Gilhooly who championed several Glasgow bands before they hit the big time. AZTEC CAMERA's first UK 7” single was released by Glasgow-based indie label POSTCARDS RECORDS back in January 1981 and contained the songs “Just Like Gold” and “We Could Send Letters”. The latter song appeared on the influential C81 compilation cassette released by NME in 1981 which I already featured here on my blog back in November 2008 so just check it on my Labels. "We Could Send Letters" is also included here in the CD I'm featuring right now. AZTEC CAMERA released six albums and they were High Land, Hard Rain (1983), Knife (1984), Love (1987), Stray (1990), Dreamland (1993), and Frestonia (1995). Of course they have 12 inchers too and some of their songs where included in a lot of compilations.

"The Best of Aztec Camera" is a 16- Track excellent overview of RODDY FRAME's songwriting as AZTEC CAMERA from their 1983 debut "High Land, Hard Rain" up through 1993's "Dreamland". This compilation was released back in 1999 and I didn't missed out buying it since it entails Aztec Camera's brand of witty, sophisticated and jazzy guitar pop. Well, if you wanted to go deeper in their music then you can buy their albums too. I love their kind of music and it still sounds good after all these decades. This is a sort of time capsule CD that will let you remember those songs that actually climb up the charts or just plain popular hits I may say. Definitely, a must-have for your music collection. All songs included here were played by XB, BM, and NU back on those days when FM Radio still has class of It's own. Nowadays? Naaah!! FM radio sucks!! I made my CD available for download just in case you still don't have a copy and so if you like it then better buy the original CD because nothing beats the Physical Music Format with the art works and most especially owning the Compact Disc itself gives that unknown pleasure for music collectors like me. I'm just promoting the CD. This is one CD you can listen to from beginning to end without getting bored because It's an excellent trip down memory lane. So don't just take photos using your Digital Camera, why not try using Aztec Camera. He He He!! ENJOY THE MUZIC!!

Completely Yours, POPE JOHN PAUL II

Karol Józef Wojtyła aka. POPE JOHN PAUL II has been acclaimed as one of the most influential leaders of the 20th century. POPE JOHN PAUL II reigned as Pope of the Catholic Church and Sovereign of The Holy See from October 16, 1978 until his death on April 2, 2005 which was considered as the second-longest documented pontificate and this lasted 26 years. Wheeew!! That's really incredible!! This time I want to make a blogpost of one of those people who I really admire most and this is none other than our dearest Pope John Paul II who was just beatified today MAY 1, 2011 and now called BLESSED JOHN PAUL II. Well, definitely he deserves it and It's six years after his untimely death. My little blog "The Doctor Is In" pays tribute to this Catholic Icon who have blessed the wold of his love by featuring a Religious CD I bought entitled "Completely Yours, A Tribute To Pope John Paul II". YUP!! You got it right!! Let's be religious today and give space to his Holiness here in my blog. I saw him twice when he visited MANILA back in 1981 and 2005 and just seeing him passed by gave me a sense of peace and tranquility. Believe it or not, I had goosebumps too. There is this certain aura that wraps around him and you could see and feel his true angelic holiness. On his 2005 visit, my brothers, cousin, friend, and I have to run almost a kilometer just to follow the Bullet-proof vehicle he was riding together with the Late Cardinal Sin. And this was after his LUNETA MASS. This is "The Dr. Stirring Rhod Way" of giving tribute to Blessed John Paul II. I hope you'll like it. This little blog of mine has a heart and I'll always keep it that way.

"Completely Yours, A Tribute To Pope John Paul II" is an ENHANCED CD which means It's both Audio and Visual that was released here in MANILA as a Tribute to The Pope back in 2005. YUP!! It's a Philippine Tribute CD for the Pope who is so love by my KABAYANS and of course by a lot of people around the globe. This was made available two months after Pope John Paul II's Philippine Visit. "TOTUS TUUS" was Pope John Paul II's apostolic motto. It is a Latin phrase meaning "totally yours" and expressed his personal Consecration to Mary based on the spiritual approach of Saint Louis de Montfort and the Mariology in his works. The pontiff explained the meaning further in his book Crossing the Threshold of Hope where he defines it as not only an expression of piety, or simply an expression of devotion and that it is deeply rooted in the Mystery of the Blessed Trinity. Very HOLY indeed!!

It touched my heart and I'm glad that the Pope was Beatified and hopefully he will be canonized to being a Saint.

THE WEDDING PRESENT are a British Indie rock group based in Leeds, England which was formed back in 1985 and led by Vocalist and Guitarist DAVID GEDGE who's the band's only constant member. Other original members back then were KEITH GREGORY on Bass, PETER SOLOWKA on Guitar and SHAUN CHARMAN on Drums. The band emerged from the ashes of THE LOST PANDAS which fell apart in 1984 when singer David Gedge's then girlfriend Janet Rigby, the drummer for the band, left him for guitarist Michael Duane. After that heartbreaking incident, Gedge and the Pandas' bass player, Keith Gregory, decided to continue the band, renaming it "The Wedding Present." Gedge had wanted to use this name for some time, but had been afraid of the perceived similarity with the name of one of his favorite bands which was "The Birthday Party". By the time the Lost Pandas broke up, however, The Birthday Party had also split up, and Gedge felt free to name his new band "The Wedding Present".The band's music has evolved from fast-paced indie rock to more varied forms. Throughout their career, there have been a lot of changes in the band's line-up. Personally, I just got to know "The Wedding Present" by the Legendary C-86 compilation which I have also featured here in my little blog before. Well, I must admit that their music cannot be easily appreciated at first but when you got to play their songs all over again you then get the upbeat feeling of liking it already. They have this very unique sound that will classify them in the Indie Route. It's "FAIRY TALE WEDDING FEVER" around the globe because of the Wedding of PRINCE WILLIAM and KATE MIDDLETON that's why I'm featuring "THE WEDDING PRESENT" here in my little blog "The Doctor Is In". YUP!! Since this band came from ENGLAND then It's really timely for the Royal Couple's Wedding. If you love INDIE MUSIC then this band should be one of your list.

THE WEDDING PRESENT's Discography consists of 34 singles, 2 extended plays, 8 studio albums, 5 live albums and 13 compilation albums.At the height of their popularity the band had a run of twelve top-30 singles in twelve months, equaling a record set by Elvis Presley. Wheew!! That's quite a number of songs indeed for an Indie Band which didn't got that necessary exposure here in MANILA back in the 80s.

THE WEDDING PRESENT's debut album "GEORGE BEST" is my one and only music material from this great Indie Band which was released back in October 1987 by their own record company, RECEPTION RECORDS. Although as what I have presented you earlier wherein the band had a lot of music materials I still opted to only buy their debut album in CD format. What I have here is the 23 Track CD Re-release which has 9 Bonus Tracks. The band sought and received permission to name the album after Northern Irish football legend GEORGE BEST. That's George Best on the cover too!! This football legend agreed to appear on promotional shots with the band that's why if you have the album the photo of George Best is all around it. Definitely one great CD for PINOY NEW WAVERS to consider having in their music collection. After self-releasing five singles on Reception Records label, the band turned to recording their first album, continuing their collaboration with producer Chris Allison, who had produced their previous single, "My Favourite Dress" which incidentally is my favorite song from the band. The album's somewhat tinny sound reflects the low recording budget was in making this music score. David Gedge's songwriting chronicles relationships breaking up or never taking off which I think makes this album more interesting. A digression is CD bonus track "All About Eve", which is about apartheid, a subject that Gedge came into contact with during his childhood years back in South Africa. Disagreement on production values with Allison led to the album being remixed by the band and engineer, Steve Lyon. The larger part of these conflicts seemed to lie with the personal and musical incompatibility of Allison and drummer Charman. Well, this always happens if you talk about bands.

The original Reception Records compact disc release added two bonus tracks from the B-side of single "Anyone Can Make a Mistake". All later CD re-releases of George Best, starting with the 1997 re-release by Canadian reissue label Pearls from the Past, added all tracks of 1988 singles "Nobody's Twisting Your Arm" and "Why Are You Being So Reasonable Now?", including a cover of The Beatles' "Getting Better" which I think was a very unique rendition since I'm also a BEATLEMANIA. By the time of the latter single's release, drummer Shaun Charman had been fired and replaced by Simon Smith. In 2007, the band played a 20th anniversary tour of George Best, performing the album in its entirety. I made my CD available for download just in case you're interested to have a copy. I still encourage you guys to buy the original one since this is just for your listening pleasure and I'm also promoting the CD as well. ENJOY THE MUZIC!!

Well, another timely reason for this special blogpost of mine about "THE WEDDING PRESENT" is regarding FOOTBALL. YUP!! The band's album cover was GEORGE BEST who is a Football Legend and here in the Philippines today there is an increase awareness and love for the sport. Never in the entire sport's existence here in my country has this increase popularity of football happened before and thanks to the entire PHILIPPINE FOOTBALL TEAM who are better known as "THE PHILIPPINE AZKALS". The Team is now in a winning form trying their best to represent the entire FILIPINO NATION for the AFC Challenge Cup. Incidentally, there's this Football Tournament called "WORLD CUP PILIPINAS" which starts today APRIL 30, 2011 at the historical LUNETA. It's on their 2nd year and the Philippines won last year 2010. I guess Basketball's popularity here in my country is really going down the drain. Well, It has been for the past decade.

Well since Prince William and Princess Kate just married yesterday APRIL 29, 2011 and It's their wedding that inspired me to do this blogpost, I included a simple video clip of The Royal Couple's Marriage Vows. That was indeed a MODERN DAY FAIRYTALE!! A Royal Blood and a Commoner tied the knot and getting ready to live happily ever after in a Palace. Wheeew!! I watched it on T.V. and It's definitely one that we read on story books. The Royal Couple looks good together.

CASSETTE TAPES Art Exhibit

Last February 11, 2011, a different kind of exhibit was presented at the First Year Anniversary of Vinyl Forever in Makati City. Although I wasn't able to attend the said event on that specific date, the exhibit even extended for a few weeks so when I visited the shop I was lucky to still catch the distinctive art exhibit. YUP!! It was definitely an "out of this world" experience since it was an art extravaganza about CASSETTE TAPES which my generation grew up using as an alternative to Vinyl Records and come to think of it I was only passing by the vicinity. I wonder if the young generation of today still know what a cassette tape is? He He He!! Well, here's my special blogpost about that very interesting art exhibit entitled "KISS MY ANALOG: A Year In Replay". Mind you, they aren't just your ordinary cassettes that we usually play on our tape decks back on those days. These were extraordinary stuffs that even my creative thoughts didn't imagine. Ha Ha Ha!! I can't believe my eyes seeing these cassettes turned into a collective creative art works by different artists. I took some photos of the tape art works for you to enjoy but I wasn't able to note down the specific artists who made them because there were a lot of them and I haven't had enough time listing them for this blogpost. But what's important is that I'm featuring the artists works here on "The Doctor Is In" since I belong to the generation who loves Cassette Tapes. Btw, the Blogpost Header Photo is a sort of Wooden Wall of Colorful Cassette Tapes which I counted as 96 original works of art and I noticed that four cassettes were already missing. Personally, I called it "THE WALL OF CASSETTES". Btw, I just made up the Art Work Titles on each of the photos that I'll show you because I wasn't able to take note of the exact Art Titles and the Artists who created them. If I were to give the Art Titles then these are what I'll name them. I didn't took photos of all the entries, but instead I just chose what I found the most interesting ones. Actually all of them were really original and good but I have to trim it down. This is a Vinyl Record Shop and having a Cassette Tape exhibit made it really fit for a time capsule since both Music Formats (Vinyl Records and Cassettes) are getting extinct nowadays. Maybe the Bieber-Gaga Generation can learn a lot from this. I bought some records on the shop first just before looking at the art works. It's PINOY INGENUITY at It's BEST!! So my dear readers, may I present you a different Analog Experience!! ENJOY VIEWING!!

This next artwork would definitely be my favorite among all entries. This is a Photo Portrait that's really quite huge. I mean HUGE in the proper sense!! The interesting part here is that everything you see was made of that cassette tape reels. YUP!! That brown thing that rolls and when at free time you rewind or fast-forward using your ball pen. Remember that method KABAYANS? Ha Ha Ha!! Those were the good ol' days indeed when life was just simple with a clear breath of fresh air.

John Hughes' Films DVD Boxsets

John Wilden Hughes, Jr. aka. JOHN HUGHES (February 18, 1950 – August 6, 2009) was an American film director, producer, and screenwriter who directed and scripted some of the most successful films of the 1980s and 1990s. One of my favorite 80s directors of my generation. I already made a tribute about him before here in my blog when he passed away last 2009. Together with that John Hughes blogpost I made was a photo of the Video CDs (VCDs) of his seven films which I bought back in 2008. Last year 2010, these seven Film VCDs were released here in MANILA on two DVD Boxsets to my delight. YUP!! I was glad it became available here in the Philippines at a much affordable price than if you'll purchase each DVDs abroad. Of course I didn't escape such opportunity to buy the John Hughes DVD Boxsets which I'm now featuring here on "The Doctor Is In". A must-have for PINOY NEW WAVERS even though it's not the musical score but the films themselves are all considered classics and they are all much oriented on the musical genre called NEW WAVE. So KABAYANS if you still don't have these great DVDs try to check out the Record and Video Shops and get your copies. It would definitely give you one heck of a NOSTALGIC TRIP!! That I assure you and It's really cool for your collection.

The First DVD Boxset was entitled "I LOVE 80s MOVIES" which included Four John Hughes Films namely PRETTY IN PINK, FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF, SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL, and SHE'S HAVING A BABY.

The Second DVD Boxset was entitled "THREE 80s CLASSICS" which included Three John Hughes Films namely THE BREAKFAST CLUB. SIXTEEN CANDLES, and WEIRD SCIENCE.

These are Two Great DVD Boxsets to remember JOHN HUGHES who was popular with my generation. Well, I'm not going to the details of each films because I'll feature all of them here on my blog so just stay tune for that.

JOHN HUGHES quit Hollywood back in 1994, but was said to have left behind some boxes of notebooks and computer files containing film ideas and screenplays after his death last 2009. One of John Hughes' lost movies is reportedly set for a posthumous release. The Big Bosses at Paramount Pictures have purchased the rights to Hughes' unfilmed script entitled "Grisby's Go Broke" which was about a dysfunctional Chicago family who lose all their money when the economy slumps. This is considered as one of John Hughes' lost movies which is reportedly set for a posthumous release.

Last year March 7, 2010 at the 82nd ANNUAL ACADEMY AWARDS there was a tribute to John Hughes' life and works. YUP!! It's the OSCARS giving the tribute to the man himself. This was a retrospective of clips from his classic films which was followed by cast members including Molly Ringwald, Matthew Broderick, Macaulay Culkin, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Anthony Michael Hall and Jon Cryer. A great tribute I may say for the man which made a mark in 80s teen movies!! A wonderful gathering on stage to commemorate the man and his contributions to the film industry.

SNEAK ATTACK

SNEAK ATTACK was the Legendary WXB 102 Party which made a mark back in the 80s for PINOY NEW WAVERS/PUNKS. YUP!! It was one of those "102 Parties" that was very memorable back on those days. It was so successful that a sequel was made so It was "SNEAK ATTACK" and "SNEAK ATTACK 2". I was only able to attend the Part Two which was held at the ATRIUM in MAKATI. Last month March 2011, I passed by THE ATRIUM in MAKATI and instantly remembered this Legendary 102 Party and it just popped up my mind that I'll create a special blogpost about it. The "ATRIUM" is very different right now compared to 24 years ago when the party was held there. Since there's no known "Sneak Attack" article yet in the world wide web so I decided to make a special blogpost about this Legendary 102 party. YUP!! It's"The Dr. Stirring Rhod Way" of remembering "SNEAK ATTACK" and it's exclusively here on "The Doctor Is In" so I hope you'll enjoy another trip down memory lane.

"SNEAK ATTACK" was first held at "RIZAL THEATER MAKATI" back in MAY 7, 1986 Wednesday Evening. The guest bands then were "CHARLOTTE RUSSE", "IDENTITY CRISIS", "SAKE", and "THE DAWN". Dance Mobile Production by THE PREPPIES and WXB 102 with guest Music Mobiles HARMONIC TREND, EYEBALL DUB, and MODE ZERO.

"SNEAK ATTACK 2" was the followup to the successful 102 Party "SNEAK ATTACK" and that's exactly after a year. This time it was held at "THE ATRIUM MAKATI" back in May 6, 1987. YUP!! It was again held on a Wednesday Evening and a month before WXB 102 had their final broadcast. All four bands who were present on the first party were again present in this sequel namely "CHARLOTTE RUSSE", "SAKE", "THE DAWN", and "IDENTITY CRISIS" with two additional guest bands and they were "VIOLENT PLAYGROUND" and "KHUMB MELA". Dance Mobile Productions by JESCAM and WXB 102 with the return of the three original Music Mobiles EYEBALL DUB. HARMONIC TREND, and MODE ZERO but this time two additional mobiles were included namely WAVE and ZOU.

EGG RECORDS "An Introduction To 1988-1991"

EGG RECORDS is an Independent Record Label based in Glasgow, Scotland. The record label initially released 8 records between 1988 and 1991 and after a long hiatus these long deleted Vinyl Records were restored and remastered digitally back in 2003. Since It's EASTER SUNDAY 2011 here in the Philippines then I'll be featuring EASTER EGGS. Oooops!! I mean EGG RECORDS' first digital compilation which was released back in JULY 2003. This CD was my first time to hear all the bands of the record label and definitely the title bears it as an introduction. YUP!! It was my first Introduction to the Record Label called "EGG RECORDS" and not to be mistaken to the Record Shop by the same name which is based in Australia. The CD compilation that I'm talking about is "EGG RECORDS: An Introduction to 1988-1991" which is a compilation of the bands with various bonus 'basement tape' numbers. Egg Records was short-lived, but the label contributed to the late 80s/early 90s post-c86 UK pop scene. They released singles from The Prayers, The Bachelor Pad and Change Of Seasons, as well as the classic "Lighthouse In A Desert" compilation 12" with the former two bands, Remember Fun and the Church Grims. This Glasgow-based record label officially started back in 1988 and It released materials from local bands such as THE BACHELOR PAD, THE PRAYERS, and REMEMBER FUN and not to forget Paisley's THE CHURCH GRIMS. It also expanded their horizon by signing bands from beyond Scottish borders such as CHANGE OF SEASONS who hailed from Toronto, Canada.

Of course EASTER SUNDAY reminds us of The Resurrection of JESUS CHRIST. Aside from that we also know the usual EASTER BUNNY and EASTER EGGS. That's why I'm bringing you the sound of EGG RECORDS. What do you want? Scramble Eggs, Omelet, or Sunny Side Up? "EGG" in Pilipino is "ITLOG". So here in the Philippines we have the usual Meals that we call "TAPSILOG" , "LONGSILOG" and other combination with eggs. KABAYANS, don't be hungry okay. Wouldn't it be nice to have "ITLOG RECORDS" here in MANILA? What do you think? He He He!! So here's the meal for today's blogpost which is the insight on this record label called "EGG RECORDS".

"EGG RECORDS: An Introduction to 1988-1991" is a CD compilation which I bought because I was very interested to know the music of EGG RECORDS. None of the bands had the radio exposure here in MANILA back in the late 80s and early 90s and so definitely this CD for me was a fresh insight on the record label and their talents. It was EGG RECORDS' very first digitized released that compiled tracks from all eight of the label's releases which were mostly the A-sides and all four tracks from the compilation 12 inch. The CD even added three previously unreleased songs from Remember Fun, Church Grims and Change Of Seasons which made it very special. Five singles, a tiny compilation entitled A Lighthouse In The Desert, a live EP, a studio EP which is eight releases in total. This is a compilation of 14 songs restored from the original vinyl plus 3 unreleased songs from the archives. That was Egg Records' output during its initial three years of existence which was stated on the title itself "1988-1991". A very comprehensive release indeed that was added to my modest music collection from the label's Five Bands. There will also be some CD re-issues of Egg's original bands and its restoration program will include those late 80s and early 90s independent artists of the non-Egg variety many of whom represent the Oceanic music scene like Australia's The Palisades and Let's Go Naked, and New Zealand's The Bats. This is something to look forward to if you ask me. I made available my CD for download since it's Out Of Print already and this is just FOR PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY. This blog of mine still encourages everyone to get the original music materials. Btw, there's no such thing as "RARE mp3s". YUP!! It's just a figure of imagination because the term "RARE" should be use for the REAL and PHYSICAL FORMATS such as Vinyl Records and CDs. If you have only the mp3s but not the real materials then it's very different than having both the real materials and the mp3s backing it up if you got my drift. So don't be fooled by the so-called "Collectors" who have only the so-called "MP3 Collections". SUPPORT THE ORIGINAL MUSIC MATERIALS!! This is indeed a great compilation!! EGG RECORDS certainly had an impact on the indie scene during the post-C86 days and it's making even more noise on music collectors like me nowadays. ENJOY THE MUZIC!!

The Triffids

THE TRIFFIDS were an Australian rock band formed in Perth, Western Australia back in 1978 composed of mainstay DAVID McCOMB as singer-songwriter, guitarist, bass guitarist and keyboardist. Other band members were ALAN 'Alsy' MacDONALD on drums, PHIL KAKULAS on guitars and vocals, BYRON SINCLAIR on bass guitar, ANDREW McGOWAN and JULIAN DOUGLAS-SMITH both on guitars. By 1979, Kakulas and Sinclair had left and were replaced by David's older brother, ROBERT McCOMB on violin and guitar, and WILL AKERS on bass guitar and in 1980 MARGARET GILLAR joined on keyboards. There were still a couple of musicians who joined the band which I didn't mentioned already. Dave, Phil and Alsy escaped the heat, boredom and associated water sports by writing songs and recording them. THE TRIFFIDS recorded six self-financed cassettes before releasing any vinyl. They sold the tapes at gigs for a cheap price so that their songs will be heard. Seventy-five songs or so that have existed as magnetized fragments on tiny tapes for over 30 years. THE TRIFFIDS remained as one of Australia's best-loved, post-punk groups. THE TRIFFIDS never really got their music played here in MANILA back in the 80s so the consciousness of PINOY NEW WAVERS about the band didn't really exist. I myself got to know the band only in the late 90s via my cousin and personally as a music enthusiast and music collector I like their kind of sound. THE TRIFFIDS' early beginnings came into form when Alsy and Dave formed the Multimedia Group called "DALSY" back in 1976 and after making remarkable tapes and performing songs about cheese cakes, cats, hotel, gardens, and ruthlessly satirized everything they saw the band split up at the end of 1977 then they reformed as "BLOK MUSIK" in 1978 then transformed into "LOGIC" before being "THE TRIFFIDS". Wheeew!! That's interesting don't you think?

THE TRIFFIDS achieved international success in the 1980s but disbanded in 1989. The band's best known songs are "WIDE OPEN ROAD" and "BURY ME DEEP IN LOVE. The first full length album "The Triffids" ever recorded was called "Treeless Plain" back in 1983. Their very first record for a major label was "Calenture" under Island Records in1986 which opened up many possibilities for the band. Their 1986 album entitled "Born Sandy Devotional" was featured by SBS television in 2007 on the Great Australian Albums series and just last year 2010 it ranked 5th in the book called "The 100 Best Australian Albums" written by Toby Creswell, Craig Mathieson and John O'Donnell. The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) recognized The Triffids' importance on 2008 when they were inducted into their Hall of Fame. Music historian, Ian McFarlane, declared that David McComb was an authoritative singer and accomplished songwriter and that he infused his melancholy songs with stark yet beautiful and uniquely Australian imagery. Few songwriters managed to capture the feeling of isolation and fatalistic sense of despair of the Australian countryside". David McComb died in 1999 from a car collision but his death was mainly due to heroin toxicity and mild acute rejection of his 1996 heart transplant.

"THE TRIFFIDS" "AUSTRALIAN MELODRAMA" is a 19 Track CD Compilation of the band's great works from 1978-1989 which was released by WHITE RECORDS back in 1994. As what was written on the CD "Nineteen Episodes from the Adventures of THE TRIFFIDS". Well, this is my one and only music material from "THE TRIFFIDS" and I find it very concise to learn about the band. If you guys want to know their kind of music I guess better have this CD on your music collection and don't just be contented on mp3 files. The CD Cover is very much related on the Lenten Season here in the Philippines right now. YUP!! The crucifixion cover art was the main reason I made this special blogpost of "THE TRIFFIDS" for "SEMANTA SANTA 2011" and what a way to celebrate Holy Week on "The Doctor Is In" by featuring this TRIFFIDS compilation. Even though the band didn't have any radio exposure here in MANILA back in the 80s, I still believe that if ever their sound were introduced here back then they will be appreciated by fellow PINOY NEW WAVERS too. My personal favorites in the compilation are "RED PONY", "WIDE OPEN ROAD", "BURY ME DEEP IN LOVE", and "GOODBYE LITTLE BOY". I included all four music videos of these songs to spice up this special blogpost of mine about "THE TRIFFIDS". I also made my "AUSTRALIAN MELODRAMA" CD available for download just in case you wanna have a copy. This is only for your listening pleasure okay. All tracks have different flavor that's why you will definitely like each of them. Great music from a great band!! ENJOY THE MUZIC!!

APRIL SHOWERS were a Glaswegian Indiepop duo formed back in 1981 composed of JONATHAN BERNSTEIN and BEATRICE COLIN. Originally, It was a three man band composed of Jonathan Berstein, Hubble, and Bobby Caldwell who worked with a variety of instrumentalists and singers and submitted demo songs for OPERATION TWILIGHT Record Label which they had an unreleased 7" single entitled "While The City Sleeps". Actually, a lot of their demos didn't see the light of being released. Then came Beatrice Colin who was a former member of the band called French Impressionist. After the early gigs and demo of French Impressionist, singer Beatrice was let go then she became a member of "April Showers" thus the duo of Berstein and Colin was born. Well, this is "The Dr. Stirring Rhod Way" of giving due credit to the duo who made a mark for PINOY NEW WAVERS back in the 80s. Since It's the month of APRIL at this moment of the year 2011, then I'll SHOWER you with this exclusive blogpost of mine about the band. APRIL SHOWERS were first introduced here in MANILA by POWER 105 DZBM back in 1985 by playing the classic song "ABANDON SHIP". This song was very popular here in MANILA because it was also included on the Legendary Philippine New Wave Vinyl Compilation entitled "IT'S CALLED NEW MUSIC" which I have already featured here on "The Doctor Is In" way back September 22. 2007. Wheeew!! I can't believe it's almost four years ago. "ABANDON SHIP" is Track 4 of Side B of that classic compilation and became a hit here for PINOY NEW WAVERS back in the 80s since it was also played by WXB 102 and NU 107 back then. It was also included on one of the 90s Legendary Philippine Bootleg Compilation "NEW WAVE DIARY" CD series. YUP!! I will still feature THE REAL "NEW WAVE DIARY" CD Series here on my little blog so stay tune okay. When I say REAL, It's the real CDs. "Abandon Ship" was also included in the 2006 Philippine release "BEST OF 100 MUSIC OF THE EIGHTIES" Six CD Boxset which I have also featured here in my little blog way back June 10, 2008 celebrating my 100th Blogpost back then. Would you believe that "Abandon Ship" was only a hit here in the Philippines and not in any other parts of the globe not even the duo's homeland? Hmmmp? That's how great the taste of PINOY if you talk about the NEW WAVE Genre. YUP!! ONLY HERE IN THE PHILIPPINES!! "APRIL SHOWERS" only release was the single “ABANDON SHIP" on BIG STAR which was a subsidiary of CHRYSALIS RECORDS in 1984. It was produced by ANNE DUDLEY (Art of Noise). "April Showers" have a repertoire built to last a lifetime and the musical matrimony of both Berstein and Colin made their sound very unique.

"ABANDON SHIP" 12" Vinyl Record is still one of the MOST EXPENSIVE RECORD I ever bought in the past decade. YUP!! Better not ask how much it cost me. Waaaah!! Well, I'm just glad it's worth the savings and definitely this record should not escape every Hardcore PINOY NEW WAVER like me. Btw, at the time "Abandon Ship" was released Beatrice Colin was the girlfriend of James Grant who was then part of FRIENDS AGAIN which is another band that's popular among PINOY NEW WAVERS. The B-Side entitled "EVERYTIME WE SAY GOODBYE" never really hit MANILA's airwaves back in the 80s but It was first played by 103.5 K-LITE's "LITEWAVE" back in 2003 when my fellow collectors who frequent the radio program converted an Original Vinyl into mp3. It then became a massive hit for PINOY NEW WAVERS who haven't heard of the song before. Most listeners were even surprised to know that the song was sung by "APRIL SHOWERS". The radio ad for "FREE STATE SOUND" which was JAM 88.3's Defunct New Wave Radio Program also included "Everytime We Say Goodbye" and this was the part when the English Accent Female mentioned the word "Obscure" on that said radio program ad. Definitely, another cool song from APRIL SHOWERS!!

Do you know that the Record Label where "Abandon Ship"was released had a LOGO that looks like a PHILIPPINE FLAG? YUP!! Check out my record and you'll see the resemblance to our very own flag KABAYANS. Too much coincidence don't you think guys?

So what ever happened to Berstein and Colin after "April Showers"? Tracking down the whereabouts of the duo is not that easy as you think because the only member that is visible right now is Beatrice Colin who after graduating from the University of Glasgow worked as a journalist for the arts and features pages of publications including The Scotsman, Sunday Herald and The Guardian. YUP!! Miss Colin became an author of six published works namely Disappearing Act, My Invisible Sister, Nude Untitled, The Luminous Life of Lilly Aphrodite, The Glimmer Palace,and The Songwriter. I included a photo of her works which I arranged the way I mentioned it. Beatrice also completed her doctorate and was a Royal Literary Fellow at Strathclyde University. She also has spoken at numerous festivals including the Edinburgh Book Festival and is currently a mentor for the Scottish Book Trust. Definitely, a promising writer in Scotland.

Well how about her partner Jonathan? There's a certain Jonathan Berstein who is the author "Pretty In Pink: The Golden Age Of Teen Movies" which was an extremely an un-intellectual look at the 80s, taking in every genre from slasher to gross-out and paying extended homage to the John Hughes film but none was mentioned to confirm if he was the Berstein of "April Showers" since this was his very first book and he was also born in Scotland and loves Scottish Music. If someone could shed a light on this and I'll be very much grateful.

APRIL SHOWERS?

Late last year just before CHRISTMAS 2010 I had a chance to visit Last FM and found three songs from a band called "April Showers". At first I was really excited to know that there exist other songs from them but I was disappointed to know that this "April Showers" are not the same band that we used to know here in MANILA. Their songs might sound like them, but then again listening to it carefully, it's definitely not Bernstein and Colin. I uploaded one song here for you to judge.

There's also the Five-piece French all-girl ukulele pop band who call themselves "APRIL SHOWER" without the "S" on "SHOWERS". This group mixes girl group harmonies, odd electronic and dreamlike songs.

Filipino Indie Band "THAT LINGERING FEELING" did a cover of "April Showers" song "Abandon Ship" which was part of the Philippine Indie Compilation "UNDER THE COVERS" which I already featured also here in my blog last January 6, 2010. Just check my "FILIPINO INDIEPOP SCENE" Blogpost on my LABELS.

ALL SPORTS BAND

ALL SPORTS BAND was an American Rock group from Cleveland formed back in 1981 composed of MICHAEL JOHN TOSTE (Lead Vocalist), CY SULACK (Guitarist), ALFONSO CAREY (Bassist), CHUCK KENTIS (Keyboardist), and JIMMY "The Boxer" CLARK (Drummer). This band was considered to be a maligned gimmick created by TRACY COATS wherein the concept was based from THE VILLAGE PEOPLE. YUP!! You got it right KABAYANS!! It's a sort of a ripped-off so instead of those Village People Costumes, this band wears different Sports Wear as their name implied "ALL SPORTS BAND". Well, here in the Philippines we have our very own Village People look-alike group who were known as "HAGIBIS" which really became popular too on the same time the Village People became famous. Tracy Coats took it upon himself to create a similarly themed "band" who would inherit the throne of the then faltering Village People. He was the one who drafted two former Village People backing musicians into the lineup and also added three more players to complete this band. "All Sports Band" then became a sports themed band complete with appropriately costumed members who could utilize various props to bring the concept true to it's name. The band had a kick boxer, baseball player,football player, race car driver, and a boxer. Interesting don't you think? Of course, they are not real players okay. It's just an image for the band. Btw, the kick boxer was originally conceptualized as a hockey player, but was switched when they realized skates would be pretty hard to wear onstage. Hmmmp? Just imagine wearing skates while playing on stage.

The "ALL SPORTS BAND" was introduced here in MANILA by 99.5 RT "Rhythm Of The City" back in 1982 with the song "OPPOSITES DO ATTRACT" which remained an "RT EXCLUSIVE". YUP!! It was only heard and played by 99.5 RT back in the 80s. Regular RT Listeners will definitely remember this song. Personally, I love the song and up until now I still love singing along with it. Wheeew!! I don't care about those cheesy outfits that these guys wore or their concept, the important thing is that the song is great. Although "All Sports Band" managed to chart twice in the Top 100 and had an appearance on American Bandstand, audiences just weren't buying into the whole idea because they were merely a cheesy idea that never truly came off. "All Sports Band" was so widely reviled at the time, that no tour was ever booked and no followup album was ever planned and finally their story ended by early 1982.

Well I bought their one and only album just for their "OPPOSITES DO ATTRACT" song. Nothing more and nothing less!! He He He!! I uploaded the song and made it available for download just in case you still don't have it. I also included the lyrics in this exclusive blogpost of mine so that you can sing along with me. Ha Ha Ha! Well, It's "The Dr. Stirring Rhod Way" of remembering this "ONE HIT WONDER" band called "ALL SPORTS BANDS" which was a 99.5 RT EXCLUSIVE. When 103.5 K-LITE was still on MANILA's airwaves they also included this song on their playlist but that was on the 90s already. I hope you enjoyed another trip down memory lane. THE HIGH was an English band formed back in late 1989 by former Turning Blue singer JOHN MATTHEWS along with ANDY COUZENS on guitar, SIMON DAVIES on bass, and drummer CHRIS GOODWIN. Andy and Simon are from Macclesfield while John and Chris are from Oldham. They were generally regarded as part of the Madchester scene even though they are not all from Manchester. Although the members themselves came from different bands like Buzzcocks, The Stone Roses, The Patrol, Inspiral Carpets, and Waterfront, each of them didn't look into it as a burden but in some ways helped them. This only became a burden when it was used by journalists who could not pin down their sound and had to throw in a bit of band history to feed the reader/record company. I decided to feature this band right now due to the recent events here in the Philippines. So what am I talking about? THE HIGH cost of gasoline, THE HIGH cost of electricity. This also includes the recent Fare Hike on the Transportation like Jeepneys, FX, even the LRT/MRT. Let's also include THE HIGH cost of Pork, Beef ,and Chicken in the Wet Market. I am really HIGH right now. Ha Ha Ha!! Whether I use my vehicle or just commute definitely it affected my daily budgeting of expenses. YUP!! You got it right, all of these happened in just a month. Btw, even the Skyway Toll fare is being eyed to increase anytime. Wheeew!! Let's just look at the bright side. Are there any? Actually these are old news but all happening in barely a month. That's really HIGH!! He He He!! So let's go back to THE HIGH, not the school okay. WANBOL HIGH? Naaah!! THE HIGH was another underrated band during those times which was even compared to THE STONE ROSES.

THE HIGH was signed up by London Records and had three minor UK Singles Chart hits in 1990 before breaking into the top 30 in 1991 with a revamped version of their debut single, the Martin Hannett-produced "BOX SET GO". The band's debut album, "Somewhere Soon", peaked at number 59 in the UK Album Chart. THE HIGH never had an exposure on Philippine Radio back in the day but PINOY NEW WAVERS will remember them for their "BOX SET GO" song because Legendary 103.5 K-Lite New Wave program "LITEWAVE" included the song on their playlist. YUP!! They started playing the song back in 2004 up until the radio program closed on 2006. The band had two albums on London Records namely Somewhere Soon (1990) and Hype (1992).The band really didn't want to go to the Indie Route. According to Couzens, Independent Labels have been cheapened during those times and Major Labels took advantage of them using them as nursery. Well, definitely one advantage for these Majors are that there's no shortage of money. With the Madchester scene losing it's magic among the critics, the band's later releases failed to chart which caused their split up in 1993. John Matthews and Chris Goodwin went on to form the Manchester group "One Summer" with local musicians Stephen Fitzpatrick on guitar and Carl Wolstenholme on bass. THE HIGH is one band that can be included in the so-called "Where are they now?" thing.

THE HIGH "Somewhere Soon" debut album was released back in 1990 and contains 10 outstanding tracks that reflected the Madchester Scene just before it made the genre really popular back in early 90s. Aside from the critically acclaim "BOX SET GO" which incidentally is my favorite, I also love the songs "Up & Down" and "Dream Of Dinesh". The title track "Somewhere Soon" is also just as good as the others. Well, I bought the CD because I still think that this band should have been given credits too in nourishing the Madchester Scene back then.YUP!! They will always be compared to THE STONE ROSES, but they have a special unique identity which can also be heard on each track on the album. The Wild Swans "The Platinum Collection"

THE WILD SWANS are a Post-punk band from Liverpool, England, which was originally formed back in 1980 whose core members had all been key players on the legendary Liverpool Eric's club scene. The band first came together when their vocalist, PAUL SIMPSON left the Teardrop Explodes with whom he had been playing keyboards in late 1979. Simpson formed THE WILD SWANS few months later with keyboardist and pianist GED QUINN, and JEREMY KELLY with whom he had spent a year previously rehearsing in an untitled and unrecorded local band. One great band that PINOY NEW WAVERS really love. THE WILD SWANS were first introduced here in MANILA by NU 107 back in 1988 with the song "BRINGING HOME THE ASHES". The band immediately click on the taste of Pinoy Music Enthusiasts back in the 80s because of the haunting and cool vocals of Paul Simpson. YUP!! The man who made also a mark here in MANILA because of his previous band "CARE". The next MANILA hit was "WHIRLPOOL HEART" which was also introduced by NU 107. Actually, the whole "BRINGING HOME THE ASHES" album made it big here in MANILA and a must-have for all PINOY NEW WAVERS since all tracks had their airplay from NU 107, POWER 105 DZBM, and 99.5 RT. We will get through the details of each hits when I will feature the album itself here on my blog so just stay tune for that. THE WILD SWANS' next album which was "SPACE FLOWER" didn't made that much impact comparing to "Bringing Home The Ashes" and the song "MELTING BLUE DELICIOUS" was the only song that got airplay here in MANILA which was also introduced by NU 107 back in 1990. In the past years, there were already a lot of rumors circulating about the possibility of THE WILD SWANS coming over here in MANILA to do some concerts. Up until now, all of this remained as an imaginary thought.

THE WILD SWANS "The Platinum Collection" was originally released only here in the Philippines back in 2006. Everyone I knew who loves this band was just excited as I am to know this CD released in our local record bars. Wheeeew!! I just missed buying music materials in the record bars. Nowadays, you just can't seem to get a good buy anymore if you visit the record bar here in the Philippines. Recently, there was this news about the Top 5 business around the world that will get extinct for the next 5 years and sad to say "RECORD BARS" are included. This CD compilation collects all 10 tracks from "Bringing Home The Ashes" as well as 8 of the 10 tracks from its follow up "Space Flower". The two tracks from "Space Flower" which were both not included were "Tangerine Temple" and "Vanilla Melange". I will feature both albums of "The Wild Swans" here my little blog "The Doctor Is In" in the future. Definitely, this CD is another must-have for PINOY NEW WAVERS and it's very affordable. The Wild Swans were only intermittently active through the 1980s. The band's first split occurred very soon after their debut of "Bringing Home The Ashes" and resulted in Kelly starting up The Lotus Eaters with co-founder Peter Coyle. Simpson followed suit with the Care project, teaming up with Ian Broudie. Space Flower was produced by Ian Broudie with participation of Chris Sharrock on drums and Ian McNabb on additional guitars and vocals of the Liverpool three piece. THE ICICLE WORKS appeared as guest musicians. Broudie contributed on both guitars and organ to fill in the vacuum created by departed members Quinn and Kelly. Simpson refers to this latter version of the band as simply, 'himself and a few friends'. I guess that's well said!! Just in case you still don't have a copy of this CD and you wanted to have one, I made the CD available for download for your listening pleasure. Most of you may have the original CD already and that's good because my blog still encourage you guys to buy the original materials. Paul Simpson released a material as THE WILD SWANS last 2006 with "LIQUID MERCURY". The Wild Swans will also release a new album this year 2011 entitled "The Coldest Winter for a Hundred Years" which will be accompanied by a U.K. Tour and a probable concert here in MANILA . That would be cool and awesome!! Of course with a different line-up. ENJOY THE MUZIC!!

CHINA CRISIS "LIVE In LIVERPOOL" DVD

"CHINA CRISIS Live in Liverpool" is a DVD of the band's concert which was released by Pickwick back in February 2006. It contains 15 Tracks of Audio-Visual clarity of the said event with a running time of 52 minutes. If you have watched CHINA CRISIS twice Live In Manila back in 2002 and 2011 like me, then this DVD is a must for you to remember their music LIVE in concert. Well, it is available here in the Philippines in an affordable price so KABAYANS get your original copy. Recently, my country has a sort of China Crisis in a way because three Kabayans were executed last week March 30, 2011 in China due to cases of drug trafficking. We will not discuss about that, but that was indeed a sad day for us here in the Philippines. Let's just PRAY for their souls guilty or not guilty. That's not the case of course with this DVD that I'm featuring right now. GREAT SET of songs indeed by GARY DALY and EDDIE LUNDON. Awesome performance by the duo with the help of other musicians in the set. I really find the set-up of the stage very refreshing and cool. I also love the sound of violin!! There's a special participation of PETER COYLE of LOTUS EATERS who was also a MANILA visitor back in 2002. Hmmmp? Interesting both of them have visited MANILA. Peter Coyle did the vocals for the song "Here Comes A Rain Cloud" which was really good for your eardrum. The versions of "WISHFUL THINKING", "BLACK MAN RAY", and "AFRICAN AND WHITE" were reminiscent of their "ACOUSTICALLY YOURS" CD which I have featured here on my little blog last February 26 ,2011. Definitely, this DVD is one for your collection.

Btw, I also bought a Bootleg DVD Copy of this at QUIAPO which has a different title. Ha Ha Ha!! YUP!! This version was entitled "CHINA CRISIS Wishful Thinking Live In Concert". Hmmmp? Talking about changes ah. He He He!! I watched this bootleg version and it was totally the same thing with only mild difference like the INTRO Selection for the start of the set.

The funny thing about this QUIAPO Version was that there were a lot of TYPOGRAPHICAL ERRORS on the titles. Look at the photo and spot the wrong titles. Although this also contains 15 Tracks, the print out label only specified Tracks 1-10 and didn't include anymore the so-called EXTRAS which were Tracks 11-15. Btw, this was MADE IN CHINA. Perfect for the blogpost don't you think?
