Remembering TEDDY DIAZ

It was 23 years ago AUGUST 21, 1988 when the Philippine Music Industry and PINOY NEW WAVERS/PUNKS were shocked by the news that the guitarist and founder of PINOY ROCK/NEW WAVE BAND "THE DAWN" TEDDY DIAZ was stabbed to death while on his way to his girlfriend's driveway on a dimly-lit Agno St. in Tatalon, Quezon City coming from a live guesting of THE DAWN at "Martin After Dark" hosted by Martin Nievera. It was a sad day indeed since THE DAWN was just becoming the #1 band in the Philippines back then. Well, this is just "The Dr. Stirring Rhod Way" of remembering the late Teodoro de Villa Diaz aka. Teddy Diaz , son of Filipino actor Vic Diaz of Sampaguita Pictures fame, who was born on April Fools' Day. Teddy Diaz spent both grade school and high school at Ateneo de Manila University and after graduating from high school he then enrolled at the University of the Philippines as an architecture student and stayed there for three years. He transferred to the Philippine Women's University after his third year in UP and took up music with guitar as his major. Teddy was also gifted with a talent in drawing and would spend time with Fine Arts students in PWU and would draw comic book characters and different electric guitar designs for relaxation. Hmmp? That's what you call great talent right? Just a proof of his willingness to improve his craft. Recently, THE DAWN just celebrated their 25th Anniversary and with this comes a Tribute Compilation CD for the band wherein 15 Pinoy Alternative Acts played their own renditions of 15 songs from the band. I'll feature this CD compilation too here in my blog "The Doctor Is In" in the future. There was also a T.V. special on "I-Witnesss" on GMA 7 hosted by Jay Taruc entitled "SALAMAT TEDDY" back in 2008 which I found very comprehensive review on the life of Teddy Diaz. I just do hope that GMA 7 would make this available on DVD package like some of their "I-Witness" episodes. That would be a cool material for every collectors like me. Btw KABAYANS, better also have a copy of "TULAD NG DATI" DVD because it's also very interesting. I definitely like the concept of the film.

"TED REMEMBERED: The Day The Music Died" was an article written by Manny Pagsuyuin aka. PAGZ and better known as DJ JIMMY JAM back in 1988 which was few weeks after the death of Teddy Diaz. The article was featured on a small student newspaper called "ISTUDYANTE". Well, it was a great piece of history I may say wherein Pagz wrote about his views and personal memories of Teddy Diaz as a Friend which he stated "Many people knew of him, but very few knew him." YUP!! Pagz knew Teddy well and his death really affected him too.

Here's a photo of a Young TEDDY DIAZ courtesy of Manny Pagsuyuin

Here's a great Video Clip of TEDDY DIAZ in action back in 1988:

"He was almost like a myth to us. There’s this rocker who never smoked, never drank alcohol and was also very in touch with his spiritual side. Teddy heard mass and prayed the novena everyday. He was also friends with the Sisters of The Holy Spirit. These people gave him the book "The Dawning of The Holy Spirit" from where he lifted the name of our band."
— Jett Pangan, Lead Vocalist of THE DAWN

I hope you guys enjoyed this little tribute of mine to our IDOL "TEDDY DIAZ". THANKS for dropping by again!!

TEDDY DIAZ,
....A TRUE LEGEND!!

Remembering AUGUST 21

AUGUST 21 is a date that every FILIPINOS would definitely remember as the day Senator Benigno Servillano "Ninoy" Aquino, Jr. was assasinated at the MANILA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (MIA) back in AUGUST 21, 1983. The said AIRPORT is now known as the NINOY AQUINO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (NAIA) in honor to him. AUGUST 21, 2009 marks the 26th DEATH ANNIVERSARY of this great FILIPINO that will never be forgotten on PHILIPPINE HISTORY because of his contributions. His death gave birth to an uprising that would restore DEMOCRACY here in the PHILIPPINES back in 1986 when her wife the LATE CORAZON COJUANGCO-AQUINO became the PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES. YUP!! That was the HISTORICAL EDSA PEOPLE POWER REVOLUTION of 1986. A LEGACY that would be pass on to generations. According to NINOY "THE FILIPINO IS WORTH DYING FOR". NINOY AQUINO (November 27, 1932 – August 21, 1983).

AUGUST 21 is also a date every PINOY MUSIC ENTHUSIASTS will remember as the day Teodoro de Villa Diaz who is more popularly known as Teddy Diaz was stabbed to death on AUGUST 21, 1988 in front of his girlfriend's house in Quezon City by two bystanders allegedly under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The son of Legendary PINOY ACTOR Vic Diaz, PINOY ROCKERS, WAVERS, PUNKS will definitely remember TEDDY's contributions in the PHILIPPINE MUSIC INDUSTRY as the FOUNDING LEAD GUITARIST of PINOY LEGENDARY BAND "THE DAWN". Unfortunately, he died at the peak of THE DAWN's career and popularity. AUGUST 21, 2009 marks the 21st DEATH ANNIVERSARY of this great musician who according to his close friends have a true PASSION FOR MUSIC. As Yours Truly, Dr. Stirring Rhod would sing "Singing out my ENVELOPED I-DIAZ"!! TEDDY DIAZ (April 1, 1963 - August 21, 1988).

Well, we're just remembering the 80s and of course remembering NINOY and TEDDY for this blogpost. THANKS to NINOY and TEDDY for their own contributions for the FILIPINOS to cherished.

Just remembering
AUGUST 21!!

DEAD SOULS

My "ALL SOULS DAY" Blogpost!!

Today is NOVEMBER 2, 2008 and for Pinoys it's "ALL SOULS DAY". Though, It's usually celebrated on NOVEMBER 1st which is "ALL SAINTS DAY" It is still the same for Filipinos either the 1st or the 2nd of November. The important thing is that Pinoys remember their departed love ones on these days by visiting the cemeteries. This blogpost of mine is inspired by this great Filipino Tradition that I'm proud of which is pass on generation to generation. Of course the blogpost title is from the classic JOY DIVISION song entitled "DEAD SOULS". So what now? I would just like to pay tribute to some departed artist on the music genre I really love. Well, there are too many to mention but I've just trimmed down the list because I just can't place all of them here in my blogpost.

IAN CURTIS (July 15, 1956-May 18, 1980)

Well, definitely first on the list is JOY DIVISION's legendary lead singer IAN CURTIS who was responsible for the song "DEAD SOULS". Pinoy Wavers and Punks would always remember him with the XB Classic "Love Will Tear Us Apart". Due to health and marital problems IAN decided to end his life by hanging himself in the kitchen. A life so gloomy and dark indeed and a controversial one. And would you believe guys that his tombstone was stolen last June this year. Huh? That's how IAN made an impact on the music industry and his life and works has recently made headlines.

TEDDY DIAZ (April 1, 1963 - August 21, 1988)

Next on my list would be TEDDY DIAZ, the legendary guitarist of THE DAWN. Pinoy Wavers, Punks, and Hardcores were really shocked on his untimely death 20 years ago because he was stabbed to death by two unknown bystanders who were definitely under the influence of drugs and alcohol just in front of his girlfriend's house. Up until now the case is unsolved. This was the time when THE DAWN was just peaking up in the PINOY ROCK scene. I'm sure he has a lot to offer for his fans but it was really sad that it has to end very early.

MICHAEL HUTCHENCE (January 22, 1960- November 22, 1997)

Suicide Blonde is an INXS hit and who would think of that MICHAEL HUTCHENCE, their lead singer, committed suicide. Though, reports said that there were lack of suicide note and any anecdotal evidence the theory of his death was by hanging himself because of a belt found on the scene on a hotel in Sydney. Autoerotic asphyxiation was believed to be the cause of his death because he was also found naked. INXS came over here in MANILA last AUGUST, 2006 to perform Live with a brand new singer but for me INXS without Michael would never be the same again. I may say his life was "Elegantly Wasted". Hmmmp!! Another INXS hit KABAYAN.

ADRIAN BORLAND (December 6, 1957–April 26, 1999)

I could still remember the classic line of the Legendary XB DJs back in 1986-87 "This is the sound of THE SOUND in TOTAL RECALL". YUP!! The LIVE VERSION of THE SOUND's "TOTAL RECALL" was an XB classic and a massive hit for Pinoy Wavers during those times. Who is the lead singer of the band? It's this mysterious guy name ADRIAN BORLAND. Huh? Another suicide case but this time it's much horrifying because Adrian committed suicide by throwing himself underneath a speeding train in England. This was the time when he was finishing his solo "Harmony And Destruction" album. Wow!! What a title for an album considering the circumtances that happened to him. He was stricken with illness that dates back 1987 and before his death there were already signs of severe depression and agitation. I guess he was just "COUNTING THE DAYS".

JOHN PEEL(August 30,1939–October 25, 2004)

It was 1987 when I first heard the term "PEEL SESSION" when WXB102 played the PEEL SESSION version of NEW ORDER's "Dreams Never End". After that, other so-called PEEL SESSIONS were played by XB and was continued by both BM and NU in 1988-1990. So what's this PEEL SESSION? Of course Pinoy Wavers weren't able to hear JOHN PEEL's BBC radio broadcasts back in the 80s and informatiom about him wasn't available that much. JOHN PEEL was BBC's Radio One DJ from 1967 to 2004 and has helped a lot of independent artist to shine and later be known in the music scene. He was well respected due to his kind of eclectic music taste and his warm and honest broadcasting style. He died due of heart attack during a working holiday in Peru. A good guy to be missed who has inspired a lot of people and has touched a lot of lives

.
DEATH in the RAMONES

The last occasion wherein the members of RAMONES were seen together was JULY 20, 1999 when Dee Dee, Joey, Johnny, Marky and Tommy appeared together at the Virgin Megastore in New York City for an autograph signing.

JOEY RAMONE (May 19, 1951 – April 15, 2001)

Two years after the New York autograph signing RAMONES frontman JOEY died of Lymphoma. A true Icon indeed!!

Then on 2002, Dee Dee, Joey, Johnny, Marky and Tommy Ramone were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

.
Dee Dee RAMONE (September 18, 1951-June 5, 2002)

Two months after the RAMONES induction the founding member and bassist Dee Dee RAMONE was found dead on his Hollywood, California apartment due to heroin overdose.

JOHNNY RAMONE(October 8, 1948 – September 15, 2004)

One of the intact RAMONES member, JOHNNY together with JOEY never really left the band. JOHNNY died in his home due to complications of prostate cancer. Eddie Vedder and Rob Zombie were at the side of this legendary RAMONES guitarist when he died.

JOE STRUMMER(August 21,1952 –December 22, 2002)

It was only few days before CHRISTMAS 2002 when this Punk Icon suddenly died of a heart problem. JOE STRUMMER died with an undiagnosed congenital heart defect. THE CLASH was in the plans for a reunion then JOE just left this world when everyone thought that he could still continue to share music like what he had been doing during his lifetime. A favorite among Pinoy Wavers and Punks!! This guy would be surely missed.

SID VICIOUS (May 10 1957–February 2,1979)

SEX PISTOLS bassist SID VICIOUS is one of those controversial figure in PUNK history. Coming off weaned of heroine, this punk icon just cannot let go of it. Celebrating his bail, SID VICIOUS obtained some doses of heroine during the party. According to experts his tolerance became lower and does inducing some terrible effects on his body taking in heroine again. Wow!! Another victim of heroine overdose. I guess he would have sung it "I did it MY WAY!"

ROBERT PALMER (January 19,1949–September 26,2003)

Pinoy Wavers would definitely remember ROBERT PALMER with his PEPSI Commercial which is "SIMPLY IRRESISTABLE". YUP!! All those gorgeous and sexy ladies beside him that looks very similar with each other and dance together with grace. And of course, the band THE POWER STATION since DURAN DURAN was really big here in MANILA so the split up of the band members JOHN and ANDY TAYLOR created chaos among Pinoy Duranees. I was also able to watch ROBERT PALMER LIVE IN MANLA back in 1989 and had great memories of this great musician. He died from heart attack in Paris France.

WOW!! Finally my blogpost is done!!! Wheew!! That was tough indeed. Hmmp!!

We only live our life once so we should live it to the fullest. Try to make each day special for you and everyone around you. I hope you guys like this special blogpost I made for "ALL SOULS DAY". A Filipino Tradition that is sure to last till the end of time. Like the title of a THE THE album.... It's "SOUL MINING" indeed!! PROUD TO BE PINOY!!

MAY THEY "REST IN PEACE"!!

IISANG BANGKA TAYO video

IISANG BANGKA TAYO

THE DAWN's FIRST OFFICIAL MTV!!

IISANG BANGKA TAYO Lyrics
-THE DAWN

Kay dilim at kay ginaw sa kalawakan ng dagat
Ubod lakas kung humiyaw ang galit na hanging habagat
Ngunit buo ang puso mo’ng ang daluyong ay sugurin
Magkasama tayong katahimika’y hahanapin
Saan ang tungo mo mahal ko’ng kaibigan
Saan sasadyain hanap mo’ng katahimikan
Basta’t tayo’y magkasama laging sasabayan kita
Pinagsamaha’y nasa puso kaibigan kabarkada

CHORUS 2
Ating liliparin, may harang mang sibat
Ating tatawirin, daluyong ng dagat
Basta’t kasama mo ako, iisang bangka tayo
Anuman ang mithiin ay makakamtan natin

My E.J. Rock Musical REVIEW

I made a post about "EJ ROCK MUSICAL featuring THE DAWN" last month. Here's the link to my post:

I was able to get a pair of tickets for this show given to me by my friend Danny. It was on a Saturday evening that I was able to watch this great Rock Musical.I would say that the show was very relevant in the recent political crisis that's happening right now here in the Philippines. I would not really touch on the delicate political messages on the play but I definitely find the story plot and the scene created by the Production Staffs and the Casts very interesting and overwhelming. WOW TALAGA!!

WHY E.J.? Well, E.J. stands for the two important political characters that were portrayed in the Musical Play namely EVELIO JAVIER and EDGAR JOPSON. Both activists in their respective ideals and both are Ateneans.

EVELIO JAVIER (October 14,1942- February 11,1986)
Played by RICKY DAVAO
Alternate: Juliene Mendoza

EDGAR JOPSON (September 1,1948- September 20,1982)
Played by JETT PANGAN
Alternate: RODY VERA

A special booklet souvenir was sold on the gate which I find very informative. It also included a Songlist and Lyrics on the songs by THE DAWN which was sung on the play.

The show opened up with a narration that sets on a Historical Content of the Philippine Martial Law Era. Although the evening I watched the play it wasn't Ricky Davao and Jett Pangan on stage I still find the two Alternate Casts as great stage actors. BRAVO TALAGA!!! The story mainly focuses on the struggles of these two young boys going through a different path of life. They were both active in the political scene back then and have inspired a lot of our Kababayans to fight for their rights. Sadly. taking photos during the play was prohibited. The Multi-awarded Mr. ED MARANAN wrote this play and I have to really congratulate him for what he have done that mainly mixed HISTORY, POLITICS, HUMAN DRAMA, and of course MUSIC. I love the interpretation on every THE DAWN songs which were sung as the play progressed. Instead of THE DAWN, The Sisig Band was the one who performed on stage that night. I began to appreciate again deeply the lyrics on every song by THE DAWN like "ABOT KAMAY", "SALIMPUSA", "HARAPIN ANG LIWANAG". My favorites would be when the casts sang "IISANG BANGKA TAYO" and "SALAMAT". GRABE ASTIG YUNG DATING!! These two young lads, Evelio and Edgar, have their own beliefs and ideals that they stood up and never did they back out on it. Although, both of them never met each other in real life they have made a great influence on a lot of people during their times. A story filled with so much social and emotional resonance of great proportions. I was also touched when the play tackled on their respective families which were very much affected by the crisis especially their wives who have also been very supportive to them. Well, It was just sad that both Evelio and Edgar were killed fighting their ideals. To know more about Evelio and Edgar just click the link on my previous post. To wrap up the play was the song "SALAMAT" sung in Acapela. I was really blown out with this final song.
CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS GREAT MUSICAL PLAY!! GALING!!

THANKS!!

Tulad Ng Dati(THE DAWN 20th anniversary CD)

THE DAWN's 20th ANNIVERSARY CD entitled "TULAD NG DATI" in English "JUST LIKE BEFORE" is a double disc package released last OCTOBER 2006 which includes their best hits of the two decades with BONUS VIDEOS and TRACKS and the LEGENDARY GUITAR SOLO EXCERPT(VIDEO) of their LEGENDARY GUITARIST TEDDY DIAZ who was stabbed to death in 1988. I bought the CD few days it was commercially released and it's a great compilation. DISC B also includes acoustic versions of "SALAMAT" and "ABOT KAMAY". GREAT ALBUM highly recommended especially to the classic PINOY NEW WAVERS who grew up listening to THE DAWN. It's nice to see the picture of TEDDY DIAZ on the ALBUM COVER. All songs here were remade from the original versions which means it's FRANCIS REYES on guitars and BUDDY ZABALA on bass, their new line-up. Filipina Diva BITUIN ESCALANTE sang the INTRO of ENVELOPED IDEAS this time instead of the original haunting voice of KLAUS NAOMI.

IISANG BANGKA TAYO

What would happen if the TOP PHILIPPINE BEER and the TOP PINOY BAND would unite? A great single entitled "IISANG BANGKA TAYO (We Are In One Boat)". San Miguel Beer and The Dawn joined hand in hand for the release of this single in 1991. "IISANG BANGKA TAYO" was actually released as a single and became also the TITLE of the first GREATEST HITS compilation album of THE DAWN which includes hits of the band in all their 80s albums. I bought this cassette tape when the single hit the airwaves. This compilation was only released in cassette tape format with no CD or VINYL RECORD version. This is the second time that THE DAWN collaborated with San Miguel Beer, the first one was when the band's song tribute to TEDDY DIAZ entitled "SALAMAT (Thank You)" was used as a commercial jingle. "IISANG BANGKA TAYO" was also the first song with an official MTV of The Dawn. As the song goes "Basta't kasama mo ako, iisang bangka tayo. Anuman ang mithiin ay makakamtan natin."

The Story Of THE DAWN

I first heard of THE DAWN wayback 1986 when WXB102 played the DEMO VERSION of "ENVELOPED IDEAS". THE DAWN was the prime FILIPINO NEW WAVE ACT in the 80s and "ENVELOPED IDEAS "was their first smashing hit and became a FILIPINO NEW WAVE anthem back then. In 1987, ORLY ILACAD of OCTO ARTS finally gave them the necessary breakthrough by releasing their SINGLE and 12" EP of "ENVELOPED IDEAS". The moment the 12" Vinyl Single was released I remember everyone at school back in 1987 went to buy their own copies on ODYSSEY RECORDS of course that includes me. The 12" EP and Single were first released and their DEBUT album followed next. It was definitely a good feeling that finally a FILIPINO NEW WAVE BAND was acknowledged. I still considered the FIRST THREE STUDIO ALBUM RECORDS which they recorded in the 80s as their best works on their entire musical career . It's just sad that TEDDY DIAZ said goodbye very early on the band's career when he was murdered back in 1988.

"THE STORY OF THE DAWN" CD is a greatest hits compilation I bought wayback 2001 which was released by VIRGIN EMI that featured the band's hits from 1987-1994. OPM means "ORIGINAL PILIPINO MUSIC". They actually disbanded in 1995 then reformed in 1999 which was followed by a U.S. TOUR in 2000. During the hiatus JETT PANGAN had a SOLO career in 1996 and released one album. In 1997 he formed a band called" THE JETT PANGAN GROUP" which made a cover version hit of a JOHN DENVER SONG "Leaving On A Jet Plane" which made waves in the charts. THE DAWN is still active these days rockin' the current upsurge of PINOY ROCK in the PHILIPPINES. A lot of band line-up changes through the decades and still they make good music and gives great LIVE performances.
