THE BEST OF 415 RECORDS

It was 1988 when I first read about 415 Records on a foreign music magazine my friend bought back then. I found out that some of the great NEW WAVE acts I love were under this record label. 415 Records was the first North American Record Label devoted to New Wave which was founded by Howie Klein, Chris Knab and Butch Bridges in SAN FRANCISCO back in 1978. YUP!! It's AMERICAN New Wave!! I was able to buy this 1994 compilation CD entitled "THE BEST OF 415 RECORDS" which showcased Five of the Bands under the label namely WIRE TRAIN, ROMEO VOID, RED ROCKERS. TRANSLATOR, and UNTIL DECEMBER. Well, I have to feature this CD Until December if you get my drift. He He He!! As written on the back cover of my CD "Started on a lark, for fun, as a public service, 415 Records was named after the police code for disturbing the peace". Hmmmp? Very interesting don't you think? The label primarily featured punk and new wave music from San Francisco bands although as the label grew they signed bands from other cities as well. There were also a lot of Artists/Bands that were signed by 415 but we will just concentrate only on those who are featured here in this compilation CD. Four of the Five bands in this CD namely Wire Train, Romeo Void, Red Rockers, and Translator were all introduced here in MANILA by WXB 102 back in the 80s which became popular for PINOY NEW WAVERS and PUNKS as well. It's just unfortunate that the band "Until December" didn't made it big here in MANILA back on those days. According to founders Howie and Chris, the simple reason that these bands were signed under 415 Records is simply that both of them loved the band's music.

Here's a photo of my "THE BEST OF 415 RECORDS" CD.

Another "The Best Of The Greatest" blogpost as I promised before. 415 was also hindered by the same factors that affect most independent labels which is the difficulty of reaching a national audience. The 1982 Columbia affiliation changed the situation dramatically because Columbia used their marketing knowledge and established relationships with the media like radio and television which was a great medium of spreading the awareness regarding the record label itself and to bring forth 415 records to a much wider audience. Romeo Void has been singled out by critics and musicians as one of the seminal groups of the New Wave movement. Klein has quipped, referring to some of the less successful ventures, "Before the Columbia deal, we made records that cost $5,000 and sold 50,000 copies. After the Columbia deal, we made records that cost $50,000 and sold 5,000 copies." While reading through the inner sleeves of my CD, I was surprised that PINOY punk club "The Mabuhay Gardens" based on San Francisco was mentioned by Howie Klein in his story. YUP!! Howie saw "Romeo Void" performed live in "The Mabuhay Gardens" back on those days where the Pinoy Owner NESS AQUINO was auditioning new bands for the club. Wow!! PROUD TO BE PINOY!! I have mentioned "The Mabuhay Gardens" before on my special "DEAD KENNEDYS" blogpost here on my little blog wherein the band also performed on the club back then. Kabayans, I guess you better say "1-4-3-4-4". He He He!! Here in the Philippines "14344" correspond to the number of the letters on each word of "I Love You Very Much". Huh? Why did I include that in this 415 blogpost of mine? Ha ha ha!! Well, It's better than the classic "214" song of Rivermaya don't you think? Btw, this CD contains 17 tracks wherein 3 songs each from Wire Train, Romeo Void, and Red Rockers while 4 songs each from Translator and Until December. Another great compilation indeed!! So here it goes "The Best Of 415 Records"!!

I uploaded my CD just in case you wanna have a copy of this compilation. I also took photos of the inner booklet that included the pictures of the Five Bands featured in the CD. I also uploaded one song each from the band for you to listen to. ENJOY guys!!

BEST OF PUNK ROCK

It was 1980 when PUNK ROCK started to become a great music phenomenon here in MANILA and this was before XB,BM, and NU invaded the FM radio dials playing New Wave/Punk Rock music for PINOYS to enjoy. Well, if you're going to define PUNK ROCK in a true sense then there might be some different perceptions on how you believe it would sound like. It's like defining NEW WAVE wherein different countries have their own definition about NEW WAVE. Of course, here in MANILA I have to admit that we do have our own PINOY concept of NEW WAVE which I find very different and much better in taste from other countries styles and thoughts of this musical genre. That goes out for PUNK ROCK because what may be PUNK ROCK to you may not be PUNK ROCK to others and that goes the same with NEW WAVE. Let's not debate on it anymore. Back in 1987, there was a cassette tape format that began flooding record stores here in MANILA and this was the so-called INDONESIAN TAPE. Though, If you would check the tapes more carefully It was stated on the Labels that most of them were really made from the MIDDLE EAST and not really from Indonesia. So why INDONESIAN TAPE? I simply don't know the exact answer. That's how It was called here back then. This Cassette Tape Format released any form of musical genres from SLOW ROCK, FOLK AND COUNTRY, NEW WAVE, PUNK ROCK and others. Some PINOYS would even ask their relatives working in the Middle East to send them these kind of tapes back then.

I was able to buy two volumes of BEST OF PUNK ROCK in this cassette tape format which is very much different from the original cassette tapes that we usually know. YUP!! It's still preserve in my Vaults after two decades since I bought it. He He He!! The packaging of the tape is a bit bigger and there is this distinct thick protective cover that would preserve the tape from heat. I guess It's perfect for countries having a hot climate like in the Middle East. "BEST OF PUNK ROCK" and "BEST OF PUNK ROCK 2" were the titles of the said compilations I bought at RAON in QUIAPO wayback 1989. Both cassette tapes are in C-90 type so that means It's one and a half hour of great PUNK ROCK music each. According to the label It's a FINE AZIMUTH CASSETTE HOUSING MECHANISM and It's DIRECT DIGITAL MASTERING. The sound of these tapes are excellent and I still remember those Jeepney Drivers playing this tape format on their passenger jeepneys back in the late 80s and early 90s for sound tripping.

I decided to post the TRACKLIST of both tapes here in my blogpost so that you guys have an insight of the Artists and Songs included on these tapes.

BEST OF 102 MUSIC

Today is Friday the 13th
For my Blogpost #102:
"This Is 102 Music"
"This is 102 Music" is a famous phrase that the Legendary XB DJs would say on air during the 80s and it has been carried out also on their recent Internet Radio resurrection. Back in 1988, my friend bought a Bootleg Cassette Tape Compilation at the Legendary HIGH ADVENTURE shop entitled "102 MUSIC"which I was able to borrow and taped. Well, sadly he loss the tapes...why tapes? Because their were Two Volumes released. Hmmmp!! Gladly I was able to tape both cassette tapes and made my own HouseMixTape from the Bootleg Tape back in 1988 . YUP!! It's still with me!! HouseMixTape is the term coined for the cassette tapes that you taped by yourself as your own selection either from a Vinyl record, Cassette Tape, or even CD source during those times. I entitled it "BEST OF 102 volumes one and two".

MY own "BEST OF 102"
HouseMixTapes

MY TAPE COVERS

INSIDE MY TAPES

As you will notice back in 1988 when I made this Cassette Tapes I was not yet into Computers. I was only playing 80s arcade games but not into printing or any other computer work so I made the covers by myself by cutting out Pictures on Magazines and by using Graphics sticker to make the titles. I used the Typewriter for my Tracklist. Hmmmp!! How Innovative of me. Ha Ha Ha!! This is much better than the HIGH ADVENTURE Bootleg Tapes. He He He!! Well, those were the days!! Actually the Original Covers of "102 MUSIC" were well crafted and created back then but sorry we were not able to take photos of it. Well, my version of Volume One was much longer than the original because I used a C-90 blank tape so I recorded extra tracks. Oh diba? May "Extra Tracks" nako nalalaman noon. Ha Ha Ha!! I usually use the term "Extra Rice" when I'm not yet full eating my meal. Ha Ha Ha!! My Volume Two has the same Tracklist on the original bootleg. "102 MUSIC" Tracklist includes music from LULU KISS ME DEAD, THE HUMANS, ADAM ANT, BIG COUNTRY, JOY DIVISION, THE WATERBOYS and many more. Definitely a classic bootleg tape indeed back on those days here in MANILA. YUP!! I made the same TRACKLIST on my own HouseMixTape version. I still have both Tapes preserved on my collection which I will always cherish. GREAT MEMORIES INDEED!!
In 1996, I saw two CDs at Greenhills entitled "BEST OF 102 MUSIC" volumes one and two. Hmmmp!! They copied my HouseMixTape title? How could it be? OoowS!!Just like THE CHAMELEONS would sing on TEARS....."IT'S JUST COINCIDENCE". I was not able to purchase right away the CDs because that time it was really too expensive. When I had enough budget for it and tried to return to the shop but It wasn't there anymore. Hu! Hu! Hu!! Well, luckily I was able to locate a copy from a KABAYAN courtesy of JAMES aka. "strangeface87". I got to know James at the New Wave Outpost and I was really glad to see the CD on his Multiply Account. Why the aka. "strangeface87"? Well, James informed me that It's the name of their 4th Year High School Group back in 1987 wherein they got it from the lyrics of a WXB102 classic TRANSLATOR song "COME WITH ME". Ooops!! Nabisto ko tuloy edad mo nyan James. He He He!AYUZ!!

"BEST OF 102 MUSIC" Volumes One and Two
The CD Covers

The CDs
Consider as Bottleg CDs? I suppose....? The CD cover says that's It was Made In England by CONFUSION RECORDS. Now I'm confused!! Nevertheless, It's a great compilation. I actually thought this has the same Tracklist as to the 1988 Cassette Tape Bootleg....It has indeed a different Tracklist from the Tape. It was a different compilation and totally not related.

Hmmmp!! There was also a Volume Three? Just got it courtesy of bingbong thru Mckoy. This is entitled "102 MUSIC Volume 3 Alternative Rock". I guess this CD is related to the first two. BEST OF 100 MUSIC OF THE EIGHTIES

IT'S MY 100th BLOGPOST!!!
Well, since today is my 100th Blogpost and I'm a great advocate of "PROUD TO BE PINOY" ideals....what a better way to celebrate it by featuring this PHILIPPINE RELEASE 6 CDs Compilation entitled "BEST OF 100 Music Of The Eighties". WOW!! I can't believe it!! Not really that much posting since I just find free time to update my blog for fun and of course to share my thoughts and music to everyone especially for you regular visitors of my little blog. YUP!! The NEW WAVE/PUNK scene here in MANILA!! I'm not here to compete with other Website...I'm just here for fun and relaxation. He He He!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH GUYS for the uplifting comments both here on my BLOG and on my Multiply account. And of course THANK YOU ALSO VISITORS FROM OTHER COUNTRIES!! Hmmmp!! Are there VISITORS FROM OTHER PLANETS here? Naaaah!! Thanks also to my KABAYANS who have contributed on this little Blog of mine. YUP!! Because of you guys I'm still here blogging to the nth degree. Ha Ha Ha!!

BEST OF 100 MUSIC OF THE EIGHTIES was released by EMI Philippines last 2006. Another Philippines release compilation of cool music from the decade that we won't forget easily and that's the 80s. This would be cherished a lot!! Well, I bought a copy for collection purposes even though I have most of the songs already because of it's well organized TRACKLIST. I consider the TRACKLIST of this 6 CDs as a "PINOY NA PINOY" thingy. NEW WAVE and 80s as defined by PINOY WAVERS. YUP!! It's very FILIPINO indeed. Why? I could only say XB,BM, and NU inspired with a combination of Common 80s music that's fit for PINOY consumption and of course for the whole world to hear too. You just don't get those "Hard To Find", "Out Of Print", "Rare" materials but sometimes you have to be real and get back to the basics. Music from APRIL SHOWERS (first original and major Manila CD release though it was released on Bootleg Compilation before),TUESDAY BLUE, RAILWAY CHILDREN, THE PALE FOUNTAINS, INDUSTRY, THE BIBLE, SCARLET AND BLACK, etc. The other side of the coin would be RICHARD MARX, SHEENA EASTON, MEL AND KIM, COREY HART. etc. I love the infusion of Bobby Mcferrin's song " Don't Worry, Be Happy". That's what you always have to remember!!

This CD compilation is compose of 3 Colorful Double Disc Package. That makes it 6 CDs for listening pleasure. Definitely this would take you back again in time and to those who were just too young during the 80s to appreciate such musical genre then this is the right collection for you to discover the Unforgetable 80s. As my very own MUSIC DICTUM would go"Music Matters and Memories Of It Matters Most". WOW HEAVY!! Hebigat ba mga KABAYANS? Hmmmp!! 100 songs for your time travel? Not bad at all!! This CD compilation was also sold outside the gate of the LOST 80's LIVE IN MANILA CONCERT last April 19,2008. It's still much available on your SUKING TINDAHAN. He He He!
This collection is displayed on Manila's Record Bars together with two other BEST OF 100 series namely "BEST LOVE 100" and "BEST OF 100 Music Of The Sixties". Well, it's up to you if you wanna get the other two. If you're Sentimental like most PINOYS then the LOVE series would be appropriate for you,but if you are into Baby Boomer music then get the SIXTIES series.

Do you know that there is another set of 100 Series dealing with the 80s but a different version? YUP!! It's entitled "100 ESSENTIAL 1980s"!! A lot of RETRO releases here in the Philippines lately.
100 % 80s INDEED!!

THE BEST 80's PARTY ALBUM

Well, 1998 was a year of 80s and New Wave compilation releases here in MANILA both Official and Bootleg. An Official Philippine release of Universal Records in 1998 was "THE BEST 80's PARTY ALBUM ...EVER!" compilation CD under Avex Trax. Three sequel CDs were also released on 1999 and 2000 namely" Volumes 2&3, and Non-Stop Party album". Basically, I didn't buy these four CDs back then because it really contains the most common 80's and New Wave songs , but when there was a Universal Record Sale last year and I saw these CDs for sale in a much more cheaper price then I decided to get the copies for listening purposes while driving ..... at least they're not burn CDs. He He He! YUP!! I still find it as a cool 80s compilation. The series contains music from Naked Eyes, Al Corley, Men At Work, Pointer Sisters, A Flock Of Seagulls, Human League, Camouflage, Yazoo....and many more to mention! Of course, there's also a New Wave flavor in it but it's just Shallow and not Deep. He He He!!

1) THE BEST 80's PARTY ALBUM ......EVER
2) THE BEST 80's PARTY ALBUM vol. 2
3) THE BEST 80's PARTY ALBUM vol. 3
4) THE BEST 80's NON-STOP PARTY ALBUM
