SNEAK ATTACK

SNEAK ATTACK was the Legendary WXB 102 Party which made a mark back in the 80s for PINOY NEW WAVERS/PUNKS. YUP!! It was one of those "102 Parties" that was very memorable back on those days. It was so successful that a sequel was made so It was "SNEAK ATTACK" and "SNEAK ATTACK 2". I was only able to attend the Part Two which was held at the ATRIUM in MAKATI. Last month March 2011, I passed by THE ATRIUM in MAKATI and instantly remembered this Legendary 102 Party and it just popped up my mind that I'll create a special blogpost about it. The "ATRIUM" is very different right now compared to 24 years ago when the party was held there. Since there's no known "Sneak Attack" article yet in the world wide web so I decided to make a special blogpost about this Legendary 102 party. YUP!! It's"The Dr. Stirring Rhod Way" of remembering "SNEAK ATTACK" and it's exclusively here on "The Doctor Is In" so I hope you'll enjoy another trip down memory lane.

"SNEAK ATTACK" was first held at "RIZAL THEATER MAKATI" back in MAY 7, 1986 Wednesday Evening. The guest bands then were "CHARLOTTE RUSSE", "IDENTITY CRISIS", "SAKE", and "THE DAWN". Dance Mobile Production by THE PREPPIES and WXB 102 with guest Music Mobiles HARMONIC TREND, EYEBALL DUB, and MODE ZERO.

"SNEAK ATTACK 2" was the followup to the successful 102 Party "SNEAK ATTACK" and that's exactly after a year. This time it was held at "THE ATRIUM MAKATI" back in May 6, 1987. YUP!! It was again held on a Wednesday Evening and a month before WXB 102 had their final broadcast. All four bands who were present on the first party were again present in this sequel namely "CHARLOTTE RUSSE", "SAKE", "THE DAWN", and "IDENTITY CRISIS" with two additional guest bands and they were "VIOLENT PLAYGROUND" and "KHUMB MELA". Dance Mobile Productions by JESCAM and WXB 102 with the return of the three original Music Mobiles EYEBALL DUB. HARMONIC TREND, and MODE ZERO but this time two additional mobiles were included namely WAVE and ZOU.

Of course the Legendary WXB 102 DJs:

Well, this would never happen without WXB 102 Station Manager back then none other than the Legend himself Mr. Jessie Gonzales.

Well, I took two photos of my visit to THE ATRIUM recently so that you'll see what It looks like nowadays.

I hope you guys enjoyed my special "SNEAK ATTACK" blogpost. Btw, the XB Radio Ad of both "SNEAK ATTACK" and "SNEAK ATTACK 2" are also classics. If anyone of you KABAYANS have a Vintage Audio Clip of it then it would be nice to share it to everyone. "SNEAK ATTACK 2" was one great party even though my friends and I arrived late and missed out some highlights. He He He!! I'm just glad to be there !! One of those occasions I got the chance to attend a 102 Party. THANKS for the memories DWXB 102.7 FM broadcasting on the bay area!! The Station The Dares To Be Different!! THANKS again guys for dropping by my little blog!!

REQUIEM RISING

REQUIEM means any grand musical composition, performed in honor of a deceased person. It's also
a mass said or sung for the repose of a departed soul. But PINOY NEW WAVERS will remember this as one of the legendary get together of BANDS and MOBILES back in the XB and BM days. YUP!! Its' a NEW WAVE PARTY!! Now, some of my KABAYANS who organized it here in MANILA back in the 80s are bringing it back again. Well, this time it will be held at SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA and entitled "REQUIEM RISING" which will be held on NOVEMBER 20, 2010. Performances by JULIE PLUG, GOLDA + GUNS , and PAGES with Music Mixes from two of MANILA's LEGENDARY MOBILES namely MODE ZERO and EYEBALL DUB. Btw, I have already featured MODE ZERO here on "The Doctor Is In" back in JUNE 2009 and you could check it out on my archives under the Label of "MANILA'S NEW WAVE MOBILES". So if you guys are in the vicinity do check this NEW WAVE DANCE PARTY at PAUL SMITH BUILDING. There were already two REQUIEM Parties here in MANILA back in the 80s and so this would be officially It's Third Part of the saga and according to the organizers they will try to bring back the party here in MANILA too. That would be interesting isn't it?

Music Mixes were also done by MODE ZERO and EYEBALL DUB together with FIRST RELEASE, WAVES, SPYE, MOBILE ONE, and lastly the very first NEW WAVE MOBILE which I've also featured here in my little blog back in JUNE 2008 none other than HARMONIC TREND. No poster of the first REQUIEM party are available right now so I just posted "REQUIEM 2". WINSTON BAUTISTA of MODE ZERO was the one who created both poster design. That Lady in the poster is definitely REQUIEM's ultimate Logo!!

MODE ZERO

"The Mayor goes back to his roots and puts together this new set for Mix Ministry. During the 80's, in the Mayor's place, when one talks New Wave, one talks of Mode Zero, a group of young gentlemen who decided to venture into what-was-then the undiscovered realm of New Wave. Recognized as one of fore-runners of the new wave invasion in the Philippines, Mode Zero became known for doing what it does best...putting together a string of new wave tunes to come up with one seamless melody. The Mayor revisits the group's glory days through this MixMinistry exclusive." ......These are the lines that you will read on MIX MINISTRY which is "Your Remix Authority" whenever MAYOR's MIXES are featured on the site entitled "MODE ZERO REVISITED". It's great that I was able to contact Mayor of MODE ZERO when I visited the site and definitely we will be talking about their good old days again. So braise yourself guys because I'm proud to present you another one of those MANILA's LEGENDARY NEW WAVE MOBILES back in the 80s none other than MODE ZERO exclusively here on "The Doctor Is In". First of all I wanna THANK Mayor of MIX MINISTRY for the inputs and according to him the information that we will be sharing to you are basically from his own recollection as a member of MODE ZERO. Mode Zero was composed of two groups of dudes, most of them Engineering students from a famous University along Taft Avenue. Mayor stressed out that he is not in any way among the founding members, but have only joined Mode Zero thru invitation. Mayor's brother who did the spinning for the other Mode Zero group was the one who referred him to the younger group so he became one of them. The members as far as Mayor could recall aside from him were Winston Bautista, Johannes, Jackson, Totots, Monching(who took over for Mayor),Relly, and Mayor's brother Dennis. He explained to me that he might have missed out someone on the roster and would like to apologize to these guys. Well, Mayor remembers his very first gig with the group which was in a birthday party which must have been a debut. After that, he would spin for them regularly in their gigs. However, since he studied in another part of the Metropolis he seldom get to spend time with them except for pre-gig and post-gig happenings.

Vintage MODE ZERO Photo

So what's MODE ZERO's motivation? Mode Zero stemmed from the guys' penchant for music and audio. It was not enough to play good music, the music had to sound good too. Setting up during those times was really time-consuming and the members were very particular about audio quality back then. According to Mayor the most memorable gigs or considered to be their best gigs would have to be the two successive halloween parties that Mode Zero helped organized which were NIGHT CHAMBER and REQUIEM. He remembered how packed the PICC Reception Hall was back then up to the rafters on both occasions. For him "THAT WAS CRAZY!!".

Courtesy of WINSTON BAUTISTA

Worst gig for Mayor would have to be this gig they had at St. Michael bar along Makati Ave. It was the first and would later turn out to be the ONLY time MODE ZERO with Mayor as spinner would be in a gig with Audio Network...(MoD's group) and their followers were really looking forward to that. Unfortunately, Mayor bombed his set. He didn't really know how it happened but he was really off that night. He got so embarrassed that he didn't anymore return for his next set. Wheeew!! THANKS for sharing Mayor!! MODE ZERO were loyal WXB102 fans. WXB all the way!! The NEW WAVE scene here in MANILA back then was incomparable and these guys were happy that they got grouped together just before the new wave invasion really happened. One magazine before gave them credit for being one of those who started the new wave invasion here in the Philippines. That's an honor for them I may say!! While most of their contemporaries were playing disco, dance music and 99.5rt songs, MODE ZERO were playing NEW WAVE which were their thing back then. All I can say "MEMORIES INDEED"!! So where are the guys right now? They went seperate ways already and who knows maybe someday they will have a reunion. Right Mayor?

Let's shift to
MODE ZERO!!
THANKS Mayor!!

MY BLOGPOST # 133

33 1/3 Mobile
For my 133rd Blogpost, I present you one of the Legendary New Wave Mobiles here in MANILA back in the 80s and have made a comeback lately in the party scene...... ERIC PASCUAL's 33 1/3 Mobile. My second New Wave Mobile to be featured here in my little blog and I'm very thankful that ERIC was glad to know that I was interested in featuring them. Personally, I first heard of 33 1/3 on POWER105 wayback 1988 when the BM Djs use to mention the mobile's name on air back on those days. Was that very long ago Eric? He He He!! Of course, they got their name from the Long Playing Record 33 1/3 rpm and have been very popular for PINOY WAVERS. 33 1/3 was officially founded by original members Eric Pascual, Patrick la Madrid, Sonnie Pagdanganan, Bobby Aguila, Noel Madayag & David Sanchez. Jayson Salvatierra joined the group during the 90's. According to ERIC PASCUAL they started wayback 1985 as a nameless mobile wherein they usually assigned themselves to bring sound system to each and every parties they organized and attended until they graduated in 1987. They provided sound system for their section's graduation party in Bonanza restaurant in EDSA, bringing different home components, speakers and improvised lights. This party became successful and Eric decided to pursue this as a serious business which I think was a great move for them. I even remembered attending a MARYKNOLL Party back in 1989 which they powered back then. Btw, Maryknoll is now known as MIRIAM COLLEGE and this is not the college of Senator Miriam Santiago. He He He!! The first organized party that 33 1/3 worked on was entitled "ASK" (taken from a song from THE SMITHS). They were part of every parties, school fairs, concerts of some schools like Assumption College, Siena College, St Bridget, St Joseph, St Mary’s, and University of Santo Tomas just to name a few. MGA CHICKER TALAGA AH!! He HeHe!! Well, I remembered visiting BM station back then and it was flooded by Ladies from SIENA COLLEGE. Hmmmp!!

THE MEMBERS:
Standing: Bob, Trick, Eric
Seated: David, Sonnie & Louie

Arnold Fontillas
Raymund Generoso

The guys love for NEW WAVE music in a sense encouraged them to get out of their small community and decided to go visit DZBM POWER105 wherein they met BM Jock CHELLE D. on board & made their first ever request “Upside Down” by TWO MINDS CRACK which was brand new at that time. They became regular visitors of BM and made friends with the jocks, RSL & the owners as they provided them with good NEW WAVE records for them to play and in return POWER105 would advertise the 33 1/3 mobile on air. Wheew!! Nice Shot guys!!

33 1/3 BM Days!!

In 1988 with the help of friends in the business the group then joined 1988 Philippine Battle of Mobile held in Violago Sports Complex in QUEZON CITY. 33 1/3 mobile bested out 8 Top Mobiles in the country during that time and was announced as the Best Mobile, that made them even famous.
33 1/3's BEST MOBILE TROPHY

Here are only some of the PARTIES they organized:

Damaged Goods 1, 1988 Jealousy Disco
Damaged Goods 2, April 8, 1989 Whisper's Disco

I was able to attend Damaged Goods at Jealousy Disco with my friends. One famous BM PARTY during those days. I guess second to the "DEEP" BM Party?
Trek To The Deck, May 24, 1991, PICC

Another ticket!!

The Third Wave, Dec 17, 1993, Heartbeat Mega-Disco

PINOY WAVERS would definitely recall the term THIRD WAVE because It was the Title of this great Philippine only released NEW WAVE compilations series on Vinyl and Cassette Tape back in the 80s which I will also feature in the future here in my little blog, The POSTER AD was definitely inspired by THIRD WAVE, THIRD STAGE.

WOW!! JEALOUSY. WHISPERS. and HEARTBEAT DISCOS..... Memories Indeed!!

33 1/3's love for 80’s music are still in their veins up to the present and so they are back mixing again for special 80’s Parties recently here in MANILA but this time they have expanded their horizon by providing high quality DJ Services, Band Equipment, Mobile Disco & Pro Sound & Lights system aside from their first love of mixing Vinyl 80’s music. And so because of this 33 1/3 Mobile is now called 33 1/3 Pro Sounds & Lights that has evolved in Bar Management, Events Planning, Band Equipment, and Pro Video Production.

Hmmp? Notice any difference? Maybe the fashion statement of tucking in the polo. He He He!!

I just wanna THANK ERICSON PASCUAL for trusting my Blog to feature 33 1/3 mobile. Thanks Eric for sharing Infos and Pictures for this blogpost for everyone to see and read. I hope you guys like my own little tribute to 33 1/3 Mobile. One of MANILA's Legendary NEW WAVE MOBILES indeed!!

So guys, Let's spin our

HARMONIC TREND

HARMONIC TREND is considered as one of MANILA's LEGENDARY NEW WAVE MOBILES back in the 80s. It was formed by Blessed Elena Academy High School Classmates ALDRIN, OLIVER, JEFF, JOJO, and VIC wayback 1986. Well, this Pasay Dudes have contributed a lot in Manila's New Wave Scene back then and Aldrin recalls their first gig was at Oliver's house in Las Pinas wherein the title of the Party was "Cantonese Boy". Hmmmp!! Inspired by David Sylvian? Aldrin informed me that this party was a fund raising effort to buy themselves more equipments. WOW!! A great idea indeed!! Just for a 15bucks entrance you get to eat and drink all you can. Those were the days ha!! HARMONIC TREND then was tapped by WXB102 to be a part of some 102parties and spin their records. YUP!! That's the beginning of a great spinning experience for the guys who made a mark during those times. According to Aldrin, his most memorable 102 Party would be "SNEAK ATTACK Part Two". I have to agree with his choice because of the weird incident that happened on this great party. He He He!!

ALDRIN was kind enough to share some of HARMONIC TREND's Vintage photos:

I remember back in 1988 I made my own HouseMix Tape entitled Harmonic Trend. Hmmmp! One of the most famous Names in New Wave Mobiles!! Adrin is also an avid fan of THE CULT....you gotta see his great personal CULT Collection to be amaze. GALING!! Very
impressive indeed!!

My favorite would be his DREAMTIME LP and CD. There was also a 102 Party entitled "DREAMTIME" and Harmonic Trend was also included on that party's Mobile Line-up.

Here is a photo of HARMONIC TREND's Very First Mixer which they bought at Raon, Quiapo. AYUZ ah!! You guys were able to preserved it.

DEFINITELY ONE OF THOSE GREAT MOBILES HERE IN MANILA!!

MANILA'S NEW WAVE MOBILES

The 80s was definitely a great decade to remember especially regarding the Musical Genre called NEW WAVE. Here in MANILA, a lot of NEW WAVE MOBILES emerged in this great era. Mobiles either the Low Key and the High Profile ones have contributed a lot in terms of spreading the music by spinning their records on High School Dances, Soirees, 102 Parties, BM and NU sponsored parties and other PARTIES. These mobiles have influenced a lot of PINOYS during the 80s and some of them were even responsible for beefing up the Radio Playlist of WXB 102, POWER 105 DZBM, NU 107, and 99.5 RT. YUP!! They provided some of the NEW WAVE/PUNK Vinyl records for us to hear over the radio. I can still remember WXB102's evening radio show called "MUSIC SPIN BOX" where New Wave Mobiles were invited to relatively spin their kind of music. Of course there was also NU107's "DANCE MIX 107" that featured NEW WAVE MIXES.EXCELLENT INDEED!! Well, this blogpost of mine is my little tribute to these great LEGENDARY NEW WAVE MOBILES that burned the MANILA NEW WAVE SCENE back in the 80s and even the early 90s. And Of course, who would forget those "BATTLE OF THE MOBILES" events back in those times when these mobiles show-off their spinning talents in a competition.I made a simple list of these mobiles which I arranged alphabetically and of course It's not 100% complete. So KABAYANS if I missed out anyone of them feel free to add up to the list. I will definitely appreciate it. YUP!! I would like to thank all these mobiles for spreading the music back then.
