HERALD X

Well, here is another UNDERGROUND FANZINE that was published here in MANILA during the NEW WAVE/PUNK era of the 80s. HERALD X is an underground newsletter/magazine published wayback late 1986 during the Turmoil Times in Philippine Politics and of course on the HEYDAY of NEW WAVE and PUNK scene here in MANILA better known as the BRAVE NEW WORLD scene. It features news about PINOY PUNK Pioneers URBAN BANDITS, BETRAYED and imported hardcore bands like DEAD KENNEDYS and a lot more stuffs about the latest Underground Scene back then. YUP!! It's one of those Fanzine that also featured "THE STATION THAT DARES TO BE DIFFERENT" WXB102 since XB was one of the prime movers and supporters of the PINOY PUNK scene back then. Twisted Red Cross' Tommy Tanchanco considered HERALD X as a medium to promote his Record Label

THANKS TO ROMMEL GONZALES of PINOY WAVE BAND CAFFEINE I got to feature his Original HERALD X Fanzine which he was able to preserve up to this date. There were only TWO ISSUES that were published back in 1986. Actually, there was an unpublished 3rd Issue of HERALD X and it was on Xerox Copy format that includes mostly album reviews. If any one of you have a copy of it maybe you could share it here on my little blog.

NEWSWAVE

"What's the Buzz, tell me what's happening." (3X) "This is NEWSWAVE!" Ooops! As soon as I hear this on air on the Legendary XB show "REQUEST ROUND-UP" of Legendary XB DJ(My favorite XB jock!!) "THE MORNING MAN" back in 1987 it means it's NEWS time on his slot. The music background was taken from the JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR soundtrack and the song title is "What's The Buzz?".

NEWSWAVE is a NEWS portion about the latest in NEW WAVE and it's genres on Morning Man's Request Round-Up Morning Show which was conceptualized on JANUARY 1987. It's very obvious that the title was taken from the word "NEW WAVE".

In APRIL 1988, a Newsletter/magazine called "NEWSWAVE" was released on the underground world. As the Editors and Authors of the said Fanzine have written back then "NEWSWAVE is a newspaper magazine about anything but not everything." I bought a copy of the NEWSWAVE in HARRISON PLAZA back in 1988, but unfortunately I was unable to preserve my copy.WaaaaaaH!! The fanzine includes news about the sequestered WXB102"THE STATION THAT DARES TO BE DIFFERENT" and what happened to their DJs, The new NU107, Identity Crisis on T.V., and some news about THE BOLSHOI and U2 and a lot more stuffs!! There was also a NEWSWAVE Volume Two if I'm not mistaken. I'm not really sure if that was published too.

THANKS TO ALDRIN of Legendary New Wave Mobile HARMONIC TREND I was able to feature his copy in this blog of mine. YUP!! The photos here are ALDRIN's NEWSWAVE original copy which he scanned and preserved. So all 8 pages of the whole fanzine is here!!

The SPONSORS of this 1988 fanzine is the usual sponsors and supporters of WXB102 when the station was still on air in 1985-1987. Every PINOY NEW WAVERS and PINOY PUNKS will definitely remember who they were:

KHUMBMELA
HIGH ADVENTURE
ARTE LINEA
NIZZLE DAZZLE
DREAMS
ECLIPSE
HARD STUFF

.......unfortunately these sponsors doesn't anymore exist here in MANILA at present.

I had a chat last year with INGGO "THE MORNING MAN" ON THE XB BOARD and he was really glad that I have helped him remember his "NEWSWAVE" PORTION on "REQUEST ROUND-UP".

THE 14th NU107 ROCK AWARDS

NU107 was a vital radio station back in the 80s and still rockin' MANILA's airwaves at the present time. It brought back NEW WAVE format on MANILA months after WXB102 went off the air. It also inspired POWER105 DZBM to bring back their NEW WAVE format which was removed on mid-86. NU107 is also very influencial in promoting and supporting the PINOY ROCK scene from the 80s,90s, 2000 and beyond.

Read my NU1o7 entry:
The NU107 ROCK AWARDS started wayback 1994 when the PINOY ALTERNATIVE ROCK scene was very much alive. I remembered watching the first Rock Awards on T.V. and Legendary Pinoy Rock Icons performed LIVE! "LAKLAK" by TEETH was the "SONG OF THE YEAR". ERASERHEADS Pinoy Alternative Catalytic Album "ULTRA ELECTROMAGNETIC POP" became the "ALBUM OF THE YEAR". I was able to get two different original NU107 ROCK AWARDS CDs given to me by NU107 jocks back then which I will post in this blog in the future.
The 14th NU107 ROCK AWARDS was held last week NOVEMBER 30,2007 at The World Trade Center in Pasay City. This 2007 Rock Awards is as star-studded as it was from the previous Rock Awards. Performances from PINOY ROCK bands like BAMBOO, HILERA, TROPICAL DEPRESSION and many more made the event really awesome. Of coure, don't forget 80s PINOY ROCK Icon THE DAWN was also there to perform.

The WINNERS are:

BAND AID'S "DO THEY KNOW IT'S CHRISTMAS?"

"It's CHRISTMAS 1984, And there are more starving folks in our planet than ever before..." as DAVID BOWIE speaks at the tail end of the classic Extended version of the classic CHRISTMAS song "DO THEY KNOW IT'S CHRISTMAS?" by BAND AID. Of course, in the MEDICAL SIDE, BAND AID is a Trademark Adhesive Bandage or Plaster that is used to cover small wounds. But, this time as "BAND AID", a SUPER BAND that was formed by SIR BOB GELDOF(Boomtown Rats) and MIDGE URE(Ultravox) back in 1984 to give AID and relief to the Famine state in Ethiopia by releasing a song entitled "DO THEY KNOW IT'S CHRISTMAS?".

The MUSIC VIDEO of the song was the first to be shown here in MANILA on the first week of DECEMBER 1984, then the single release followed and went out to top the charts on Manila's Airwaves. When I first saw the Video and heard the song I immediately rushed to the nearest ODYSSEY RECORD STORE to buy my own VINYL COPY. WOW!! Excellent tune indeed considering I'm a great fan of the NEW WAVE GENRE and the ARTISTS featured on this Supergroup BAND AID are my ICONS during those times.

U2 18 SINGLES

Early this year "U2 18 SINGLES" CD was released here in MANILA on two pressing. An imported and a local(more affordable) version with different prices. Well, for me this compilation is good for those who's not into their music before and would try to know and discover them. For U2 afficionados on the otherhand, this compilation album would be just another set on their collection. Not really that intense for this IRISH BAND who was first introduced here in MANILA by both WXB102 and DZBM POWER105 back in 1985 with "SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY" and "NEW YEAR'S DAY". This compilation album includes 16 of their successful singles with two additional tracks namely "The Saints Are Coming" which is a collaboration with Green Day, and a new track entitled "Window In The Skies". Of course, Pinoy New Wavers knows this great Irish Band is a total hit here in MANILA with a lot of their songs played on NEW WAVE RADIOS which were not included on the CD. A BONUS LIVE DVD entitled "Vertigo: Live from Milan" was also released as a U2 18SINGLES Deluxe Edition. The DVD features a highlight of 10- songs from the band's 25-song set in Milan, Italy during the Vertigo Tour in 2005.

The CD COVER is also the BOOK COVER of their AUTOBIOGRAPHY entitled "U2 BY U2"which was written by all four members of the band namely: Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen Jr. I got interested with the book so I decided to buy it to have the first hand info from the band members themselves. The book is great and have good insights of what the band went through on their entire musical career.I even remembered the defunct TOWER RECORDS PHILIPPINES branded them as "THE GREATEST BAND ON EARTH" when they released almost all their CD discography wayback 2004 because U2's band line-up remained intack after all these years.

TRACKLISTING:

TRAINSPOTTING

In 1996, a cult film entitled "TRAINSPOTTING" was shown here in MANILA. I was very much interested to see the film on the big screen because of the reviews I read before it was shown here in MANILA. "TRAINSPOTTING" was indeed a deep film about life on Heroin Addiction. It stars EWAN McGREGOR (young Obi-Wan Kenobi on STAR WARS episode I,II,II) as Mark Renton. The film was based on an Irvine Welsh's novel which depicted on the life of Mark Renton as a drug-dependent person who struggles through life. It was directed by Danny Boyle. A great cult film indeed with a great soundtrack!!!
Listening to the music on the film made me bought the ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE soundtrack which includes music from NEW ORDER, IGGY POP, PRIMAL SCREAM, UNDERWORLD,etc. Definitely a great score for music enthusiast like me who loves this kind of music. Then a follow-up SOUNDTRACK was released due to the success of the first one. WOW!! Indeed another great collection of tunes from DAVID BOWIE, JOY DIVISION, HEAVEN 17,etc so I have to buy it. This second offering includes cuts which weren't included on the first one and also some songs that didn't appear on the final film, but were included at earlier stages or were used as inspiration by the filmmakers.

Definitely two great CDs for your collection!!! ANG GALING!!!

TRACKLISTING:
Trainspotting(Music from the Motion Picture)
1) Lust for Life- Iggy Pop
2) Deep Blue Day- Brian Eno
3) Trainspotting- Primal Scream
4) Atomic - Sleeper
5) Temptation - New Order

8) Perfect Day- Lou Reed
9) Mile End- Pulp
10)For What You Dream Of - (FULL-ON RENAISSANCE MIX) - Bedrock featuring KYO
11)– 2:1 – Elastica
12)A Final Hit- Leftfield
13)Born Slippy .NUXX- Underworld
14)Closet Romantic- Damon Albarn
Trainspotting #2(Music from the Motion Picture, Vol. #2)
1) Choose Life- PF Project
2) The Passenger - Iggy Pop
3) Dark & Long (Dark Train) - Underworld
4) Carmen Suite No.2- Georges Bizet
5) Statuesque - Sleeper
6) Golden Years - David Bowie
7) Think About the Way - Ice MC
8) A Final Hit- Leftfield
9) Temptation- Heaven 17
10)Nightclubbing (BABY DOC REMIX)- Iggy Pop
11)Our Lips Are Sealed - Fun Boy Three
12)Come Together- Primal Scream
13)Atmosphere- Joy Division
14)Inner City Life - Goldie
15)Born Slippy .NUXX (DARREN PRICE MIX) - Underworld

Some WXB102, DZBM POWER105, and NU107 staples are included on the two CDs. My favorite would be "ATMOSPHERE" by JOY DIVISION which is I consider a very eerie song and specially Ian Curtis vocals on it is just cool. "Passenger" by IGGY POP is a staple on 103.5 KLITE's LITEWAVE.
