Samu't Saring GARY GRANADA "The Legend Series"

GARY GRANADA is an excellent FILIPINO musical performer who is both a poet and a songwriter who has ventured into various musical genres. A veteran in the PINOY music scene indeed!! It's another different blogpost for today my dear friends and I hope you'll like it. Btw, "Granada" in English means "Grenade". Well, I guess that's how explosive Gary is in the Philippine music industry. So what do you think KABAYANS? He has brought his music around the world and has written a lot of songs already in his career ranging from different musical genres like folk, rock and even gospel to satirical and political songs. Wheeew!! That's what I call diversity. Gary also received a quite number of music awards already and what Ill be mentioning are his 80s awards since my little blog "The Doctor Is In" really reflects the decade of the 80s. The awards include the 1988 KBP MUSICFEST with “Bahay”, the 1984 METROPOP for the song “Salamat Musika”, and in 1989, Gary’s Earthkeeper won the top prize in the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) Songwriting Contest. Of course, there are more awards aside from the ones mentioned. Both songs "Bahay" and "Salamat Musika" are included in the CD that I'm featuring right now. Gary Granada should not be mistaken from another great fellow Pinoy musician Noel Cabangon.

"SAMU'T SARING GARY GRANADA : The Legend Series" is a 13 Track CD compilation of Gary Granada's diverse music. YUP!! Nice compilation which I bought because of the kind of music in it although It doesn't really reflect the entire works of Gary since this talented musician has composed several songs and had several albums in his hands. I uploaded my CD just in case you wanna have a copy of it and clearly this is for promotional use only okay. My favorite here would be the LA 105.9 classic "KAHIT KONTI" in English "just a little". Who would forget the Philippine Basketball Association(PBA) theme during those times entitled "Pag Natatalo Ang Ginebra". YUP!! For die-hard GINEBRA Team fans ..... which I'm not. He He He!! The Ginebra basketball team was indeed a crowd favorite back then and definitely my KABAYANS would remember these things especially ROBERT "The Big J." JAWORSKI also known as "The Living Legend". That's why they were called "BARANGAY GINEBRA". MEMORIES INDEED!! Hmmmp? I wonder how's the PBA right now? I'm a great PBA fan back in the 80s and 90s and declined my interest come the Millenium.

LISTEN to my favorite "KAHIT KONTI":

LISTEN to "PAG NATATALO ANG GINEBRA"
in English "When GINEBRA IS LOSING"

Well, Gary Granada also made a winning version entitled "PAG NANALO ANG GINEBRA" this time sang by "BAYANG BARRIOS". I included the Video uploaded by "itchelielie" on YouTube so guys who love the PBA prepare for another Nostalgic Trip with this Music Video with lyrics. You will remember the players of the GINEBRA TEAM too since they were all mentioned.

RAYMOND LAUCHENGCO Full Circle 80s

RAYMOND LAUCHENGCO is a PINOY singer/actor who was very famous back in the 80s and one of the original casts of the 80s PINOY ICONIC TEEN MOVIE entitled BAGETS. Recently, I had a little chit-chat with KABAYANS MON and SNOOG and this guy pops up on the discussion so here it goes I decided to feature his 80s REVIVAL ALBUM entitled "FULL CIRCLE: The Big Band Album" which was released by VIVA RECORDS last 2007. The first time I saw the CD and TRACKLIST it already caught my attention so I tried listening to it at the Record Bar's listening station and It was a very interesting album to listen to since it includes 10 great tunes from the 80s in a different blend wherein Raymond was singing with a rich orchestral backup and even became Jazzy at some time so I grabbed a copy of it for listening pleasure. Well, let's be different and cheezy for a while here on "The Doctor Is In" and travel back to time by listening to 80s and New Wave Revivals from none other done BAGETS original RAYMOND LAUCHENGCO who incidentally is also one of "The Greatest Hits of the 80s" foursome that included Randy Santiago, Louie Heredia, Gino Padilla who last year 2008 had a series of concert here in the Philippines and even in the U.S.(MEN OF THE 80s). Raymond was also a special guest on EAT BULAGA's last TRIBUTE to the LATE MASTER RAPPER FRANCIS MAGALLONA who was also one of the BAGETS casts back in the 80s. RAYMOND sang the song "FAREWELL" on the noontime variety show which is one of this famous and classic song up to this date.
The "FULL CIRCLE: The Big Band Album" is a total rework and definitely a time travel for you guys who grew up listening music from the 80s. Raymond gave credit to his wife Mia for the idea that inspired him to do this retro album which is a set of hit tunes from the 80s era and singing them big-band style. Well, It's cheezy in a way but why not try it to be different. I uploaded the entire album for you guys if you're interested. Check it out!!

But before you download the album I uploaded two songs for you to listen for this Blogpost:

Francis M. (R.I.P)

My country, the PHILIPPINES, just loss a TRUE PINOY CULTURAL ICON last MARCH 6,2009 at 12:20pm when FRANCIS DURANGO MAGALONA aka. "FRANCIS M.",THE MASTER RAPPER, passed away due to severe complications after waging a battle from LEUKEMIA specifically Acute Myelogenous Leukemia or simply A.M.L. at THE MEDICAL CITY HOSPITAL. I have some patients before having the same Medical Diagnosis and I have to say in practice that it has a very poor prognosis. So when I got the news last August, 2008 of FRANCIS M.'s medical health condition I was really saddened because majority of my patients with the same diagnosis sadly didn't lived that long. Though, there are treatments indeed in this kind of leukemia, It's is still the "BIG C." (Cancer) and definitely due to some proliferative mutations the patients can have a poor immune system thus leading with other complications. I personally shot this photo of the HEADLINE NEWS that would really start this blogspost tribute of mine.

A lot of TRIBUTES has been made already in the WEB, Television, Radio, and other MEDIA FORMAT, but here's my own tribute giving my last respect to one great FILIPINO ARTIST .....and that's FRANCIS MAGALONA. From the RAPublic of the PHILIPPINES!!

Last weekend, I was able to tune in to the TRIBUTE done by EAT BULAGA for the FATHER OF PINOY RAP and was really touched on the production. GALING!! Like me, FRANCIS M., is also an advocate of "PROUD TO BE PINOY" theme and the MAN FROM MANILA would always be forever in the hearts of every FILIPINOS. As you have noticed, ever since I've started this little BLOG wayback 2007 and entitled my very first blogspost as "BIG NEW BEGINING", I have already placed the PHILIPPINE FLAG on the right side of my blog to remind everyone that this blog is definitely "MADE IN THE PHILIPPINES". YUP!! Francis M. is very nationalistic and patriotic too and that reflected a lot on his songs for the entire generation to keep. One very key person to be missed in the PHILIPPINE MUSIC INDUSTRY and the NATION itself. This reminds us that life is indeed very fragile and we have to make the most out of it. Our stay here on earth is only temporary and everytime we breathe that's a major "THANK YOU" to our creator. We may be here today...and gone tomorrow. HEALTH IS WEALTH!! We will miss you FRANCIS M.!!!

Here are some VIDEO CLIPS from
the FRANCIS M. EAT BULAGA TRIBUTE!!

IISANG BANGKA TAYO video

IISANG BANGKA TAYO

THE DAWN's FIRST OFFICIAL MTV!!

IISANG BANGKA TAYO Lyrics
-THE DAWN

Kay dilim at kay ginaw sa kalawakan ng dagat
Ubod lakas kung humiyaw ang galit na hanging habagat
Ngunit buo ang puso mo’ng ang daluyong ay sugurin
Magkasama tayong katahimika’y hahanapin
Saan ang tungo mo mahal ko’ng kaibigan
Saan sasadyain hanap mo’ng katahimikan
Basta’t tayo’y magkasama laging sasabayan kita
Pinagsamaha’y nasa puso kaibigan kabarkada

CHORUS 2
Ating liliparin, may harang mang sibat
Ating tatawirin, daluyong ng dagat
Basta’t kasama mo ako, iisang bangka tayo
Anuman ang mithiin ay makakamtan natin

INSTANCE record label

INSTANCE
If I'm not mistaken this would probably be the first article of INSTANCE to be written in the NET. It was year 1986 when NITTO PALACIO, member of PINOY 80s band INTEGRATED CIRCUIT who originally sang the RIZAL UNDERGROUND 90s classic "ROLLERS ON HER HAIR" founded this Indie record label. It was called COUNTER CULTURE back then and was changed to INSTANCE. The last project if I'm not mistaken of NITTO was the 2004 ADVENT CALL Pinoy 80s Tribute Compilation CD entitled "LOCAL RECALL" under RECTONE MUSIC but still under INDEPENDENT STANCE(I assume that's the new INSTANCE). NITTO used to be an engineer for the Legendary Pinoy Punk Label TWISTED RED CROSS owned by TOMMY TANCHANCO who was also a former member of the PINOY LEGENDARY 80s Punk Band CHAOS. There were only two albums that INSTANCE released back in the 80s of which both of them got a Legendary status. Both albums were only released on Cassette Tape format.

INSTANCE first release was DEAN'S DECEMBER's 1986 "CHEMICAL WEDDING" under it's earlier name COUNTER CULTURE. NITTO saw DEAN'S DECEMBER performed their debut gig at KATRINA'S which was a Legendary 80s Pinoy Band Gig Site along Ermita so he decided to meet up with the guys and signed them up to this INDIE LABEL. The cassette tape album contains 7 classic tracks from the band which includes the anthemic "IT DOESN'T SNOW IN MANILA". I will feature the album here in my blog soon.

INSTANCE second release was The Legendary 80s PINOY compilation entitled "SUBTERRANEAN ROMANCE (THE RISE OF THE MARTIAL LAW BABIES)". It composed of 10 songs from 10 INSTANCE bands. Well. I consider this as the original "10 Of Another Kind". He He He! This was released December 1987 and it would be the Label's last release. Bands like ETHNIC FACES, SILOS, the label's baby DEAN'S DECEMBER and of course NITTO's band INTEGRATED CIRCUIT and 6 other Pinoy Indie Bands were included in this great compilation. I will also feature this album here in my blog soon.

In 2004 INDEPENDENT STANCE released ADVENT CALL's 80s Tribute Compilation CD entitled "LOCAL RECALL". So before RIVERMAYA did it last 2006 for me it was ADVENT CALL who really made the first 80s tribute. I will also feature this album here in my blog soon.

THIS POST IS FOR MY CO-MULTIPLIERS:
ALFIE MELLA of HALF LIFE HALF DEATH
ANTHONY "bonx" JONES
and those Multipliers who requested for some info about SUBROM.

Cheers to you guys!!

I will upload songs from each album soon!!

RIVERMAYA: Tribute to 80s PINOY NEW WAVE/PUNK music!

I consider RIVERMAYA as one of the most controversial Pinoy Rock Band that have emerged in the 90s and up to the present time. Originally formed in 1993 during the start of the Pinoy Alternative Rock Boom catalyzed by Pinoy Rock Band Icon ERASERHEADS. In 1994, from out of nowhere, this band just released their self-titled debut album "RIVERMAYA" with their first single "ULAN" . A lot of critics were not impressed with these guys since they haven't performed any gigs back then and just a blink of an eye there they were a band..... managed by CHITO ROñO( Universal Motion Dancer manager). WhheeeeW!!! BMG Pilipinas just formed this band for the sake of forming one ? But as the years gone by, the band have proven their worth in the local music scene.
From my vaults here is the first article of RIVERMAYA in a 1994 ROCK & RHYTHM magazine issue:
The band's line-up then were : (1994)
Bamboo Mañalac- vocals
Rico Blanco- keyboards
Perfecto de Castro- guitars
Nathan Azarcon- bass
Mark Escueta- drums

In 1998, Bamboo left the band to migrate in the U.S. so Rico Blanco took over the vocals. Then another new chapter for the band emerge. Last year(September 2006), I was in a record bar and I noticed a new album of RIVERMAYA and to my surprise the tracklist was really great because it contains songs from the PINOY NEW WAVE/PUNK scene of the 80s which I grew up with so I immediately grabbed a copy of it. I didn't realize that the CD was on it's first few days of it's release. RIVERMAYA released a compilation album considered as the band's tribute to the music they grew up to during the 80s entitled "Isang Ugat, Isang Dugo" (in English "One Vein, One Blood") which is the band's 10th studio album. It contains 13 tracks and was released under VIVA RECORDS. Except for Isang Bandila, the album contains covers of material from the most popular bands of the Philippine alternative music scene of the 1980's. Some Pinoy New Wavers would consider this as "13 OF ANOTHER KIND". It's a compilation of PINOY NEW WAVE/PUNK MUSIC sang in RIVERMAYA's version. Rico Blanco even mentioned in the inner sleeves Legendary WXB102 as one of the reasons the album was conceptualized and recorded. Another reason they mentioned was the tearing of Rico's DEAN'S DECEMBER "CHEMICAL WEDDING" cassette tape. I was also able to attend the Launching of this album last year October 14th at the METROWALK in Ortigas. Great performance by the band and I even saw some the Pinoy Rock Icons present in the concert. Sadly, "My Sanctuary" was not included on the set.

Track listing:
1) Isang Bandila - Rivermaya
2) Golden Boy - originally by Ethnic Faces
3) Things Are Getting Complicated - originally by Dean's December
4) Tupperware Party - originally by Violent Playground
5) Ilog - originally by Joey Ayala
6) My Sanctuary- originally by Identity Crisis
7) Things Within - originally by Silos
8) Healing — originally by Dean's December
9) Romantic Kill - originally by The Jerks
10)Never The Bright Lights - originally by Violent Playground
11)Padayon - originally by Joey Ayala
12)Inosente Lang Ang Nagtataka - originally by Wuds
13)Sumigaw, Umawit Ka - originally by Identity Crisis
This is the last album of Rivermaya with RICO BLANCO as the band's vocalist. Last JUNE of this year, Rico made a confirmation that he is leaving the band. At the moment there is a Reality show at STUDIO 23 entitled "BAGONG LIWANAG" which focuses on finding the next vocalist of RIVERMAYA. Wow Pare!!! Kontrobersyal talaga ang bandang ito!!
Band's line-up in "Isang Ugat, Isang Dugo":
Rico Blanco - Keyboards, Guitars & Vocals
Mark Escueta - Drums
Mike Elgar - Guitar, Vocals
Japs Sergio - Bass, Vocals

....this line-up was the back-up band for the LOTUS EATERS concert here in MANILA which I was able to watch wayback AUGUST 2002.

The Lotus Eaters with Rivermaya!!

RIVERMAYA's GREATEST HITS albums:
1st one(Hits with Bamboo on vocals), 2nd one (Hits with Rico on vocals)

........Truly one great Pinoy Rock Band!!!!

THE PHILIPPINE VIOLATORS

It was 23 years ago when this PINOY Punk Band was formed in the midst of the rising Punk movement in the Philippines. PHILIPPINE VIOLATORS or better known as "PHIL. VIOLATORS" came about in 1984 when the ESPIRITU brothers Charlie(BONG) and Jesus(SENOR ROTTEN) formed the band together with Boyet Padernal and Noel Banares and had their first gig at the Legendary club called KATRINA'S.
The band released their debut album under the Legendary Philippine Punk Record label TWISTED RED CROSS also known as TRC(managed by Pinoy Punk Icon TOMMY TANCHANCO) entitled "PHILIPPINE VIOLATORS AT LARGE" in 1987 on cassette tape format. Their songs were also played on WXB102 which also gave them airplays during the 80s. The band was also featured in many TRC compilation cassette tapes releases during those times. I considered them as one of the Godfathers of Pinoy Punk and of course for me the Grand Daddy of Pinoy punk would still be the Legendary Iconic Band "BETRAYED". I remember seeing THE PHILIPPINE VIOLATORS only once at their MAYRICS Gig in the mid-90s during the PINOY ALTERNATIVE ROCK EXPLOSION. This was when they catapulted into stardom with their smashing hit "SIKAT NA SI PEDRO" (which incidentally is my favorite song from them). This song was first released on an Independent compilation album entitled "PINOY BATO" produced by HEBER BARTOLOME in 1991 and was their carrier single and title track on their 1994 album "SIKAT NA SI PEDRO" which had massive airplay on a lot of radio stations. Alternative Rock Radio LA 105.9 also made the band famous in the 90s which played a lot of their songs. A change in the band's line-up in this album with the addition of Jay Fronda and Arnold Alar.
Last 2004, Finally the band released their greatest hits compilation under Cyber Slave Records. The CD which was released internationally entitled "PHILIPPINE VIOLATORS 20th ANNIVERSARY COMPILATION 1984-2004 Vol.1" includes all their hits in the last two decades of their entire musical career. Definitely a great score for Pinoy Punk Afficionados who grew up listening with their brand of music. Listening to the whole compilation CD would bring back memories of this great Pinoy Band who is still active nowadays playing gigs.

LONG LIVE PHIL VIOLATORS!!

" SIKAT NA SI PEDRO "
-music by Bong Espiritu & Senor Rotten
Mayroon akong kilala
Pedro ang pangalan
simpleng tao, simple ring pumorma

Do you have an IDENTITY CRISIS?

Last MARCH 15,2007 I was able to catch the MYX AWARDS NIGHT on STUDIO23 and there was a great performance of former IDENTITY CRISIS lead singer DJ COOL CARLA(Carla Abaya) and keyboardist LENI LLAPITAN together with one of the prime PINOY BANDS RIVERMAYA. It was an awesome set and definitely the medley of two classic IDENTITY CRISIS SONGS (MY SANCTUARY,and SUMIGAW UMAWIT KA) blown me away from my T.V. SET. RICO BLANCO(RIVERMAYA's lead singer) sported an 80s hairdo and COOL CARLA was also at her best. Wala parin kakupas-kupas ang galing ng boses!!

I first heard of IDENTITY CRISIS wayback 1987 when WXB102 played two DEMO versions of their songs "IMAGINING OKTOBER" and "MY SANCTUARY". The band was formed wayback 1986 and the same year THE DAWN was signed in by OCTO ARTS in 1987, IDENTITY CRISIS also had released their Debut album "TALE OF TWO" under DYNA RECORDS. The only time I saw this band performed LIVE was on their "OCTOBER STORM" concert on a HOLOWEEN NIGHT. It was a memorable experienced back then because this would be their first Major Performance after releasing "TALE OF TWO". The concert also topbilled THE DAWN who never missed any ULTRA STORM and OCTOBER STORM concert. By 1990 IDENTITY CRISIS released their second album "WATER CAME RUNNING" under DYNA RECORDS again and this PINOY Underground Gothic Band, usually compared to SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES,were on the go again to promote the album. This time NU107 was the one who introduced the album on air with the single "WILL I EVER KNOW". I still cherished the cassette tapes of both albums. Of course the "TALE OF TWO" Vinyl which is now hard-to-find here in MANILA. In 1991 the band parted ways leaving a LEGACY behind. During the PINOY ALTERNATIVE ROCK BOOM in the 90s COOL CARLA formed the band MARIYA'S MISTRESS together with LENI and released the classic single "AGOS". With the performance at the MYX AWARDS rumours spread of a band's reunion or a remastered CD release of both their albums, but COOL CARLA directly denies these rumours. I'm still hopeful that one of these days the band will resurface again and really remaster their work in CD FORMAT with great packaging..... who knows?

Tulad Ng Dati(THE DAWN 20th anniversary CD)

THE DAWN's 20th ANNIVERSARY CD entitled "TULAD NG DATI" in English "JUST LIKE BEFORE" is a double disc package released last OCTOBER 2006 which includes their best hits of the two decades with BONUS VIDEOS and TRACKS and the LEGENDARY GUITAR SOLO EXCERPT(VIDEO) of their LEGENDARY GUITARIST TEDDY DIAZ who was stabbed to death in 1988. I bought the CD few days it was commercially released and it's a great compilation. DISC B also includes acoustic versions of "SALAMAT" and "ABOT KAMAY". GREAT ALBUM highly recommended especially to the classic PINOY NEW WAVERS who grew up listening to THE DAWN. It's nice to see the picture of TEDDY DIAZ on the ALBUM COVER. All songs here were remade from the original versions which means it's FRANCIS REYES on guitars and BUDDY ZABALA on bass, their new line-up. Filipina Diva BITUIN ESCALANTE sang the INTRO of ENVELOPED IDEAS this time instead of the original haunting voice of KLAUS NAOMI.

IISANG BANGKA TAYO

What would happen if the TOP PHILIPPINE BEER and the TOP PINOY BAND would unite? A great single entitled "IISANG BANGKA TAYO (We Are In One Boat)". San Miguel Beer and The Dawn joined hand in hand for the release of this single in 1991. "IISANG BANGKA TAYO" was actually released as a single and became also the TITLE of the first GREATEST HITS compilation album of THE DAWN which includes hits of the band in all their 80s albums. I bought this cassette tape when the single hit the airwaves. This compilation was only released in cassette tape format with no CD or VINYL RECORD version. This is the second time that THE DAWN collaborated with San Miguel Beer, the first one was when the band's song tribute to TEDDY DIAZ entitled "SALAMAT (Thank You)" was used as a commercial jingle. "IISANG BANGKA TAYO" was also the first song with an official MTV of The Dawn. As the song goes "Basta't kasama mo ako, iisang bangka tayo. Anuman ang mithiin ay makakamtan natin."
