THE PASTELS

THE PASTELS is a Glasgow-based Indie band formed back in 1982 and was considered to be the group who helped started a musical movement back in the 80s known as "shambling" or "ramshackle" style of music. This musical style is recognizable for its pop playfulness and simplicity in form and sometimes termed as "anorak" pop. Wheeew!! Simple explanation of a genre that sounds complicated don't you think guys? A lot of changes on the band line-up yet the core composed of STEPHEN McROBBIE aka. Stephen Pastel(Vocalist/Guitarist), AGGI WRIGHT(Bassist), and KATRINA MITCHELL (Drummer) would probably be the best known of The Pastels' various phases up until 1990. The very early band line up included Brian Taylor(Guitarist) aka. Brian Superstar and Chris Gordon (Drummer). Other noted band members were Bernice Simpson(Drummer) and Martin Hayward(Bass). Bernice incidentally replaced Chris just after the band was signed up by Whaam! Records. This is one of the bands that I discovered back in 1991 from a friend of mine who lend me a mixtape of obscure 80s bands back then. The tape included the song "Truck Train Tractor" which incidentally is one of my favorites from the band. Unfortunately, this band didn't made any debut here in MANILA back in the 80s. As of today, the band released FIVE Studio albums namely Up For A Bit With The Pastels(1987), Sittin' Pretty (1989), Mobile Safari(1995), Illumination (1997), and Two Sunsets (with Tenniscoats)(2009). There were also a lot of Indie compilations wherein THE PASTELS were included. They even had a soundtrack released back in 2003 entitled "The Last Great Wilderness". Well, the band didn't really broke the mainstream of pop music but still Indie fans definitely loves this band. I myself was also impressed on the kind of musicality they have on every track they made.

"TRUCKLOAD OF TROUBLE: 1986-1993" is a CD compilation of THE PASTELS singles which I bought because this CD alone can give you some of their great works from the band's existence on the specified years of 1986 to 1993. This CD contains 18 Tracks that includes new versions and mixes of The Pastels' singles that I find very refreshing to my eardrum. Well, this compilation is enough for me to remember the band itself and pretty satisfied with the songs included. Although, there are still some songs which were not included in this compilation, music enthusiasts who would like to learn about the band can listen to this CD for them to know about who THE PASTELS were. Of course, the first song I heard from the band is here which is "TRUCK TRAIN TRACTOR". A lot of jangly type of tunes and if you dare to be different then this is really for you guys. The INTRO of the song "NOTHING TO BE DONE" reminds me a lot of the POWER 105 classic hit from HOUSE OF LOVE entitled "I Don't Know Why I Love You". Songs like "FIREBELL RINGING", "SPEEDING MOTORCYCLE", "THANK YOU FOR BEING YOU, and "CRAWL BABIES" are also outstanding cuts in this compilation. I recommend this CD for you guys so I uploaded the entire CD for your listening pleasure if you're interested to have a copy of it. YUP!! Please do get the original CD because It's worth every money you spend. That's how good this compilation is. If you're an avid fan of THE PASTELS and you're eager to hear more, then It is advisable for you to really get their albums for your collection. I uploaded two songs for you to listen to while downloading the CD. ENJOY THE MUZIC!!

THE HOLLOW MEN

THE HOLLOW MEN is an Indie Band from Leeds England composed of DAVID ASHMOORE on vocals, CHOQUE (who was previously in Leeds band Salvation) on guitar, HOWARD "Howi" TAYLOR on bass, BRIAN ROBERTS on guitar and JOHNNY CRAGG on drums. The band was formed back in 1984 and derived their group's named after the famous poem by T. S. Eliot and became a driving force of MADCHESTER SOUND on the late 80s and very early 90s in ENGLAND. They started out only as a two piece band composed of both David Ashmoore and Choque when they released their first single "Late Flowering Lust" back in 1985. They were joined by bassist Howard Taylor for their debut album "Tales Of The Riverbank" released on their own Evensong record label. Brian Roberts, former band mate of Howard in "The Passmore Sisters" then joined them after. THE HOLLOW MEN were introduced here in MANILA by NU107 back in 1990 with their classic song "NOVEMBER COMES". I first heard of the band when I got a copy of a PHILIPPINE Release Compilation Cassette Tape back in 1990 entitled "ALTERNATIVE STATES" under B.M.G. Pilipinas which includes two songs from THE HOLLOW MEN just before I heard them on NU 107. The two songs on that cassette compilation were "November Comes" and "Barefoot Parade" all coming from their "CRESTA" album. I'll be featuring this PHILIPPINE Compilation Cassette Tape here in my little blog "The Doctor Is In" in the future since I still have the tape on my vaults. The band released four albums from 1986 to 1994 and these were Tales Of The Riverbank(1986), The Man Who Would Be King(1988),Cresta (1990), and Twisted (1994). Although the band split up in 1991, November Records released their 1994 "Twisted" album only in the U.S. which was made up of unreleased, demo and live tracks.

The only material from THE HOLLOW MEN which I have in my music collection is their "CRESTA" CD which includes their one and only underground MANILA hit "NOVEMBER COMES". Two songs from the album namely "PANTERA ROSA" and "THE MOONS A BALLOON" also got a little radio airplay on both LITEWAVE and CLUB RETRO around 2002-2006 when these MANILA NEW WAVE RADIO shows were still on air . Of course, nothing beats "November Comes" which is still the main song being played here in MANILA back on those times. Definitely, It's my favorite song from the band. I really love the voice and the music!! It's the song every PINOY NEW WAVER would be familiar with the band unless you're not into these stuffs back then which will make my discussion here very out of this world. That's if you get my drift. He He He!! Personally, I like the album because the music is very different from the other bands who were really popular on that Manchester Music scene back then. The album is composed of 10 great tracks with a rave on synthpop style of music. You could really hear the sound of MADCHESTER of the early 90s on all the tracks. So here goes the music of "THE HOLLOW MEN"!! ENJOY THE MUZIC!!

I included here in my special blogpost of THE HOLLOW MEN the Promo Video of their song "THE MOONS A BALOON" also from their "CRESTA" album which was uploaded by "feverhut" on You Tube:

Watch "THE MOONS A BALOON" Music Video:

Btw, the name of the band "The Hollow Men" always makes me remember this classic movie entitled "HOLLOW MAN" back in 2000 which starred KEVIN BACON because I really like the concept and story of that movie which I watched on the Big Screen at SM MEGAMALL when It was shown here in MANILA. There was a sequel "HOLLOW MAN 2" back in 2006 this time it was starred by CHRISTIAN SLATER but I only watched it on DVD. Both films have different stories and definitely not a continuation of sort and not really related to each other. I still like the first one.

I guess that's it for today's blogpost regarding the band "THE HOLLOW MEN" and a little of "HOLLOW MAN". He he he!! I hope reading this blogpost does not affect your HOLLOW ORGANS of the body. THANKS for dropping by again guys and I hope you enjoyed another trip down memory lane!!

Filipino Indiepop Scene

We just entered 2010 which is the beginning of another decade. I just wonder what kind of music and music formats would be the "in-thing" for this coming decade of "2010-2019". The decade of "2000-2009" was indeed a revolutionary period if we talk about music. YUP!! That was the decade of music files and downloading. Who would thought about that during the 60s,70s,80s and even the 90s? The music industry really had a hard time fighting against the so-called illegal music sharing or better known as music piracy because of several factors. We just said goodbye to original CDs. As a music collector, I still prefer the original materials better than these music files that's why I still buy Vinyls and CDs up to now. So for today's blogpost I'll just give tribute to my KABAYANS who continue their passion to create extraordinary music that's deeper as an underground pop scene. YUP!! It's the FILIPINO INDIEPOP SCENE!! For the past years, there is an enormous following regarding the FILIPINO INDIEPOP SCENE both here in the PHILIPPINES and my Kabayans in OTHER COUNTRIES around the globe. That's Pure Pop creation that's crafted in a different way that would make you imagine the reality of good music that's not explored and over exposed. I was able to hear these stuffs and definitely It made me wonder if Pop would be like this, then there are so much room for astonishing musical taste. Btw, the beautiful lady in the photo is Philippine Legendary and Award Winning Actress Miss SUSAN ROCES wife of the late FERNANDO POE JR. who is "The King Of Philippine Movies".
