MIXtake # 3
Duran Duran's "A View To A Kill [The 007 Killer Mix]"
Well, this is much different from #1 and #2 because this time it's only one song from "THE FAB FIVE" themselves DURAN DURAN. This was shared by bingbong and has audio excerpts from the James Bond film "Octopussy" and maybe as a promo for the next Bond film "A View to a Kill" back in 1985. The audio quality is not that good because it was recorded from vinyl to the so-called Indonesian Cassette Tapes which were also popular here in MANILA during the late 80s. Bingbong paid someone to convert it into mp3 wayback late 90s.

ENJOY THE MUZIC!!
THANKS GUYS!!

HOWLIN' DAVE (R.I.P.)

Pinoy Rock Icon DANTE DAVID aka "HOWLIN DAVE" just passed way today MAY 26,2008 due to stroke. This is indeed Sad News for PINOY ROCK!! My elder cousin who is now residing in the U.S. was an avid fan of this Legendary RJ DJ Icon back in the 70s and when I told him the news about it he was deeply saddened too. I used to recall HOWLIN' DAVE's lines "Gising na! RJ na!!" when I was a kid because my cousin listens to his radio show back then. HOWLIN' DAVE was also very vital in the PINOY PUNK scene back in the 80s which was termed as "THE BRAVE NEW WORLD" scene. A recipient of the 2001 NU 107 ROCK AWARDS "LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD", this great guy never loss the passion to help out upcoming PINOY ROCK talents then and up to his last stint here on earth. SALUDO KAMI SAYO SIR!!!

Last November 1,2007 after my tradition UNDAS cemetery visit I was still able to request a PINOY ROCK tune on RJUR Pinoy Rock Special with HOWLIN' DAVE on the booth. I will always remember his famous lines on the SUNDAY AFTERNOON "PINOY ROCK AND RHYTHM" program at RJ Underground Radio 105.9 "Pakinggan ang musikang nanggagaling sa ilalim ng lupa! Pinoy Rock Lives!". Recently he also has a Radio Program at NU107 entitled "TAPSI ROCK". There would be a special GIG on MAY 28,2008 giving tribute to him at the venue called MY BROTHER'S MOUSTACHE along Timog, Scout Tuazon St. Quezon City organized by his friends in the music industry and proceeds would be given to the DAVID Family. His remains lie at Cinco Estrella Memorial Chapels at Sangandaan, Novaliches, Quezon City. A TRUE PINOY ROCKER INDEED THAT WILL BE MISSED!!

Well, this Blogpost of mine is just my little Tribute to "HOWLIN' DAVE". May you REST IN PEACE in ROCK AND ROLL HEAVEN SIR!!

His interest in DJ’ng started when he first saw some friends playing in school fairs so he got amazed with it tried his hand at mixing and it got him interested to up to this date. He also remembered borrowing his friend’s equipment to practice and eventually bought his own gadgets. Thus, becoming his friend’s mobile group’s DJ and were invited to small events and parties to provide the music. He then thought of creating his own Music Mix Blog "TOTALLY MIXED UP" wherein he shares his talent for mixing and have some DJ friends featured on his blog. He was also invited by a European-based Internet radio station which broadcasts his mixes in a regular slot that lasts for a good one hour. PROUD TO BE PINOY!!

THE BEATMEISTER New Wave Mix

This great fast New Wave Mix started smooth with LOTUS EATERS and then the beat goes up with recent Manila Visitor REAL LIFE with their LOST 80s finale song "CATCH ME I'M FALLING".4...3...2...1.... It's "MAJOR TOM" next, now we're getting more pumped up with music from SPARKS and WIRE TRAIN. Of course, who would not go slam dancing with RAMONES extended version of "I WANNA BE SEDATED" that would let you shout "OI!! OI!! Let's Go!!". The next songs will definitely make you more wild with two PINOY all-time New Wave slamdancing favorites BILLY IDOL's "DANCING WITH MYSELF" and THE CURE's "BOYS DON'T CRY"(I still remember EAT BULAGA's Boy's Don't Cry Dance Contest). This is one kind of Nostalgic Trip you wouldn't like to miss. He He He!! Birthday Boy MORRISSEY with THE SMITHS is really cool to hear with "THIS CHARMING MAN". HAPPY BIRTHDAY MORRISSEY!! BEAT ended the mix with "WALKING ON SUNSHINE"......well guys "don't you feel good?" I enjoyed listening to the mix and I wanna thank THE BEATMEISTER for sharing this on my Blog. High School Dances and Soirees memories indeed Bro!! Thanks a lot BEAT!!

DjDoct New Wave Mix

Check out his Blog here: http://vinyl80s.blogspot.com/

The Mix started smooth and slow with CUTTING CREW's "I'VE BEEN IN LOVE BEFORE" and followed by an All-Time PINOY New Wave favorite "MORE TO LOSE" by SEONA DANCING that increases the tempo a bit. Wheew!! It's time to really dance. A song from DEPECHE MODE follows "NEW LIFE" and I remember the spoof lyrics of this song back in the 80s which were popular in school campuses "Circulating, Masturbating, NEW LIFE(2x)". Ha Ha Ha! Nice to hear THE RAILWAY CHILDREN too and this guys are not related with " MGA BATANG RILES" that starred Kempee De Leon, Gary Estrada and other young stars in the Philippine Cinema ok. OooWs!! The beat gets faster as you go on and it made you feel "JUST LIKE HEAVEN". How to end the mix with a B52s classic "ROCK LOBSTER" which was also a massive hit here in MANILA back in 1980. Another great mix indeed!! He informed me that it would be quite a while before he could make another New Wave Mix like this one. Well, he just made it especially for my little blog. I am honored Doc!!

Thanks DjDoct!!!

Well, this mix is very much different from the first mix I have featured here in my blog before.
http://docmuzic.blogspot.com/2008/03/snoog-mix.html

A lighter side of New Wave I may say with over an hour of listening pleasure. It started with an MGM film drum intro(where's the lion roar?) then the ever favorite NEW ORDER "Bizzare Love Triangle" starting the set with cute keyboardings. Cool track selections that would leave you breathless. Two great classic renditions followed next featuring BANANARAMA's version of a 1970 SHOCKING BLUE number one hit "VENUS" and SOFT CELL's version of an obscure 1964 GLORIA JONES song "TAINTED LOVE". Snoog gave both songs an elegant touch. A song from a recent Manila visitor A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS which is "I RAN" followed and it really made me smile that THE CURE's song "THE WALK" was also included. He He He! B-MOVIE's "Nowhere Girl" reminded me of REAL LIFE's version on the LOST 80s LIVE in MANILA. How to end it with the famous ENOLA GAY intro. WOW!! Although, It's more than an hour you will definitely feel "FOREVER YOUNG" listening to this mix. ANG GALING TALAGA!! The songs are very smooth to the mind and soul. The voice of Legendary AMERICAN TOP 40 host CASEY KASEM gives added flavor to remember those years. Terrific for a Nostalgic Trip back to New Wave Era here in MANILA.

THANKS AGAIN SnooG!!

LOST 80's LIVE IN MANILA

I got the news of these 3 great New Wave Bands coming over here in Manila to perform LIVE last February of this year and I was really excited about it. I saw this large billboard along EDSA and It got more realistic that these guys are really coming over here because last year there were a lot of rumours of New Wave acts coming over in Manila but it all didn't worked out. Hmmp!! Well, this year THE LOST 80s LIVE in MANILA finally had it's blast which exploded last APRIL 19,2008 at the Legendary ARANETA COLISEUM better known as "THE BIG DOME".

Actually I took a photo of that Billboard AD while driving 20 mph along Edsa. Wheeew! Just to include it here in my blog. Ha Ha Ha!!

'THE DOCTORS WERE IN" the concert!!!
We arrived at the Araneta Center around 5:30 p.m. just to anticipate any problems parking our cars. Actually, I considered this an excellent concert in a way that it has been quite a while since my last New Wave Concert and having these three bands in one night would at least make me want to think that we've watched it here in the PHILIPPINES and not abroad. Of course, there were some ups and downs on the concert. All three bands has only 1 original members each. Wheeew!! That's a tough start to handle.

The concert started a little late and what surprised us was the two FRONT ACTS namely HILERA(2007 NU107 Rock Awards Best New Artist), and the weird URBAN NATION. We were disappointed with these two acts in a way that it did not fit the Theme Title of the concert. WOW!! HILERA was just noisy for us although they did play their rendition of "STRAY CATS STRUTT". Hmmmp!! URBAN NATION just made us fall down to the ground because of what they sang. They even inserted the lyrics of THE CURE's "Boys Don't Cry" on an AKON song. That's Unbelievable!!!....That's Incredible!! Well, I wish these two slots were given back to DRAMARAMA and GENE LOVES JEZEBEL like in THE LOST 80s CONCERT abroad. Digicam and any form of Video taking was prohibited but I get to shot some. He He He!! Videos for this blog from our cellphones? Naaah!! I'll keep it to myself because our voices were heard on the background of every video taken wherein we sang our hearts out. Ha Ha Ha!!

First on the line was WHEN IN ROME with only MICHAEL FLOREALE on the original line-up. Together with him were new members JOHN CERAVALO(vocals) and ROB JUAREZ(percussion) starting with the set with "HEAVEN KNOWS". Some really thought that JOHN CERAVALO was the BALD member on their 80s Line-up on their Self-titled Album who was CLIVE FARRINGTON. He He He!Nope they aren't the same person. The band followed it up with "WIDE WIDE SEA" which is a favorite of LITEWAVE DJ Ron South. He then promoted their new single "LOST TRAIN" which according to JOHN is available on their My Space Website for listening. Then a TALK TALK rendition of the song "TALK TALK" which I like. Though, I wanted to hear my favorite ballad "EVERYTHING", or even "SIGHT OF TEARS", both songs were not just on the list that night. WHEN IN ROME capped their performance with the Classic "THE PROMISE" that made everybody up on their feet and shout and sang the whole lyrics. For me, that would be the highlight of their performance. At least they made it this time here in MANILA because they were suppose to perform here wayback 1990 with the three original line-up but didn't make it.

Then the unexpected break came in!! This time members of Urban Nation asked 15 audiences to come up on stage for a little game. Huh? A little game on a concert like this one. A Question and Answer thing about the 80s. Naaah! This took another much of the time considering everyone in the crowd wants more of the real artist doing their thing. Hmmp!! That little game consumed more than 30minutes of the time. Another downfall of the concert.
.
REAL LIFE came next and to my surprise it was only DAVID STERRY on stage and with the help of the two members of WHEN IN ROME they started the set with "OPEN HEARTED". For me, this set was the best for the night with great selection of songs.Their second and fourth song would be DZBM POWER105 classics "BABIES" and "ALWAYS". We were really surprised with the third song "BURNING BLUE" because this song were my brothers and my ultimate favorite and never did we expected it to be on their playlist because it never made it big here in Manila on those days and good thing it was included. It was also great to hear the XB classic "SEND ME AN ANGEL".I also love their B-MOVIE rendition of "NOWHERE GIRL". Actually, REAL LIFE was first introduced here in MANILA wayback 1984 by 99.5 RT by playing their classic hit "CATCH ME I'M FALLING" which was their final song of their set. DAVID STERRY's voice was still the same as it was during the 80s. THE BEST SET INDEED!!!

A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS was considered as the main act in the concert. Only MIKE SCORE was the original member who showed up wearing a Summer Hawaiian outfit and it was really very scary to see him with some Long Haired Dudes in the band. MIKE's heavy metal compadres were PANDO, JOE RODRIGUEZ, and MICHAEL BRAHM.They started the set with "MODERN LOVE IS AUTOMATIC". What really bored the audience were their new stuffs that they sang. WheeeW!! We were really shouting "WISHING........MORE OLD SONGS!!" He He He! Although they sang their classic songs like"THE MORE YOU LIVE,THE MORE YOU LOVE", "TELECOMMUNICATION", "SPACE AGE LOVE SONG","I RAN"(we almost ran outside the Coliseum when their set got very boring), and our wish "WISHING(If I Had A Photograph Of You)", I have to say their set was really the worst among the three bands who performed that night at THE BIG DOME. Good thing it was over. But we definitely enjoyed the night!!
Generally, it was great to see these three bands performed LIVE in one night. It's nice to hear their classic songs being played because that was really the main reason why we went to see them play LIVE here in MANILA.Well, I hope the next batch of the LOST 80s Concert which have been promoted that night would be much better than this one.

Well, I took a photo of the beautiful lady,Miss Yvette, who was in charge of selling the four CDs.

Some T-shirts sold at the venue. Hmmmp!! Great four designs to choose from but we have to choose only one for a souvenir. It wouldn't be practical to buy all of it. He He He!!

Some Cool Stuffs we bought!!

The T-shirt

The Four CDs

Well, as we exited The Big Dome, we got to take photos together with the two new members of WHEN IN ROME, JOHN and ROB, who were both very accomodating to the fans. YUP!! The fans were just excited to take their own photos together with these two gentlemen.

GREAT MEMORABLE CONCERT!!
Thanks Guys for coming over in MANILA!!

Let's VAULT in!!!

Ooooops!! This isn't the famous lines of Steve, Big Bert, Little John, Mark and Jamie of my favorite Japanese Cartoons "VOLTES V" which was shown here in Manila wayback 1977. This post is about "THE VAULT" which is a Web Radio Station on LIVE 365 that started broadcasting last November 2007. With the help of BENJIE COLLANTES(The Boy Wonder) of "THE VAULT", I was able to gather some facts about this great Web Radio Station that plays tracks that listeners don't hear often or even music out of the ordinary. Benjie informed me that he and some of his friends wanted to revive DZBM POWER105 in the Net but they opted not to push through it to make POWER105's status a Legendary one so suddenly "THE VAULT" just popped out. It began as an idea to transfer all their Vinyl Record collections to something portable and easy to play anytime and anywhere. It started as sharing music to friends via a blogsite regular media player randomly playing two to three songs then there goes the idea of a Web Radio........"THE VAULT" was born.

Broadcasting Live or Pre-recorded, THE VAULT plays 12 " remixes, b-sides, previously unreleased demos and alternate versions on regular days. Over the weekends, Non-stop eighties and new wave mixes on Saturdays at 8 p.m. and replays on Sundays at 4 p.m. U.S. Pacific standard time. Some guest D.J.s once in while shares their own music like DEAN ANDREW of EYEBALL DUB, JUN P. of MOBILE ONE and many more.Well, who is the program director? Hmmmmp! STEVE McCOOL!! Of course, not related to Steve Mcqueen. He He he!

LET'S GO INSIDE THE VAULT!!

That's a GREAT D.J. BOOTH!!

HMMMP!!! Excellent Vinyl Records Library!!

I've asked BENJIE if he could share a sample of his VAULT MIXES here in my blog. Taaaraaah!! He was able to send me an mp3 copy of his mix which was broadcasted last December 2007 . I uploaded it for you guys to listen to. I was able to catch this mix last year so if you weren't able to tune in that time then here it is. Taste the flavor of THE VAULT.

Click here to download the mix:

1987-The Year That Was!

1987- The year that was in New Wave Manila FM Dial!!

Hmmmp! Wondering why I entitled this Blogpost as "1987-The Year That Was"? Well, It's my 87th blogpost today and I just remembered that 1987 was a very interesting year for the New Wave Radio Scene here in Manila. Of course, I will be posting about what I personally remembered regarding the great FM dial events that occurred in this memorable year. At the start of 1987, just before the 1st year anniversary of the FEBRUARY PEOPLE POWER REVOLUTION of 1986, there were news of the sequestration of "The Station That Dares To Be Different" DWXB102.7 FM by the newly installed CORY Government. At first, I really didn't took noticed of this news since a lot of sequestrations have been going on by the Philippines Presidential Commission on Good Goverment (PCGG) back then. By the tail end of March 1987, I guess that news was very certain because I've been having difficulty tuning-in on XB and their Radio Programming schedules began changing. The radio signal became more irregular. This was the time when XB would be on air sometimes for only 3-4 hours a day usually on the afternoons just after school. It would be 5-8pm, 6-9pm or even no broadcast at all .The schedules became more erratic. If I'm not mistaken this would go on up to the early part of April 1987. It's only on the Month of May that regular radio programming went back to normal and by June the imminent sequestration was about to happen. The XB DJs then called on a Radio People Power beside the now condemned PHILCOMSEN Building in Ortigas in an effort to save the station. Sadly, by June 9 1987, WXB102 made their farewell broadcast with XB DJ Allan K. on air. I was with my friends when we were listening to the final hours of the XB broadcast so I can't forget those times. That was very bad news for Pinoy Wavers and Punks who have been avid listeners of the station. The 102 Club was born but due to unavoidable circumstances back then I wasn't able to join the club. Waaaah!! The last 102 party entilted "THE FINAL CURTAIN" was held few days after XB signed off.

After almost 5 months without any New Wave/Punk radio station on the FM dial in Manila, came a Test Broadcast on November 1 and 2 of 1987 on radio frequency 107.5 FM. YUP!! The station was "The Home Of New Rock" DWNU 107.5 FM on the rise broadcasting at Paseo De Roxas in Makati. A lot of us thought it was an XB resurrection of sort but we were wrong because its playlist and concept would be very much different from WXB102. Pinoy Wavers and Punks cheered with the new radio station that was also called "The Cutting Edge In New Rock",but the continous and repeated song formats by NU107 didn't satisfy their cravings for more New Wave music and has disappointed a lot of listeners. Sometimes, you get to hear the same song played repeatedly in a 3-hour radio program span. Their playlist was also good and they have their own style in programming and have introduced a lot of new bands and songs.

Good thing just before Christmas 1987, I was able to listen to the first return New Wave broadcast of DZBM POWER105 hosted by none other than Legendary BM DJ "THE TASMANIAN DEVIL". He even had a radio contest that moment. YUP!! It was indeed a breath of fresh air since the format of NU107 was saturating everyone and there was already a need to have a competition and POWER105 DZBM would be the appropriate radio station to do that. Thus, another New Wave Radio explosion happened here in Manila that would stretch up to the end of year 1990 which benefitted every New Wave enthusiasts back then. Modern Rock,80s Alternative, Synthpop, New Wave, Punk......anything you call it. IT IS STILL NEW WAVE for PINOYS!! DZBM POWER105 have indeed played also a lot of obscure music and their playlist was awesome too. More Bands and More Songs to be played on air. The Power Switcher Club was reborn which I was a member of. The POWER STATION was back!!
CHEERS to WXB102, DZBM POWER105, and NU107!!

ALVIN and THE CHIPMUNKS

Last Christmas, I made a Blogpost about "THE CHIPMUNKS" who for me are three of the lovable characters ever created. The movie "ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS" was to be shown here in MANILA during Christmas 2007 but due to the METRO MANILA FILM FESTIVAL that's usually schedule yearly on that time it was then moved last JANUARY 2008. Well, it's a bit late to review this movie but I find the movie very entertaining, funny, and it brought me back to my old childhood days. He He He! We've watched it at THE POWER PLANT in Makati.

It's just one of the movies that would relieve you from the harsh environment of the real world. Ha Ha Ha! It would give you an oppurtunity to laugh and smile just for a while. "ALVIN, SIMON, and THEODORE" were really great doing there own stuffs making people laugh on the big screen with their own antics. Each of them have their own personal qualities that differentiate one from the other. DAVE was also there to guide these three little cute creatures. Hmmp Creatures? ALVIN could get mad at me calling them creatures. He He He! Of course, trouble began when The Chipmunks started feeling a "STAR" and was blinded by fame and money by Uncle IAN. The first part of the movie tackled on the origins of The Chipmunks on how Dave Seville(played by Jason Lee) met these three lovable chipmunks and by then the rough rollercoaster ride for DAVE started to rumble. The songs in the movie were quite impressive with The Chipmunks renditions of "Witch Doctor", "FunkyTown", and "Bad Day" which I uploaded. There were touches of Modern Rock, Hip Hop, Funk, Pop, and Reggae in the Sountrack. A very cute movie indeed and with accompanying great story lines.

Just like the banner says "TALENT COMES IN ALL SIZES"!! I agree with that. Good for people of all sizes, and ages. That's ALVIN, SIMON and THEODORE.

HERE ARE SOME EXCERPTS FROM THE MOVIE:
