Happy NEW WAVE Year 2009!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

I guess 2008 is coming to a close and here we are welcoming a bright year 2009 ahead of us. This would be my last blogpost for year 2008 and I'm very thankful with the blessings I received the whole year around and still looking forward for more this coming year. Expect more great Blogposts here on "The Doctor Is In" and hopefully I will still have some time to post more interesting stuffs for you guys. I'm just happy that there are more visitors this year than last year 2007 and I'll be happy if 2009 would still make good vibes here in my little blog which I never expected to grow like this when I started it last AUGUST 2007. I'm very glad I made a lot of friends just by blogging. Of course, THANKS to you guys for supporting my blog. Btw, I hope the other visitors who come once in a while here would sign up in my chatbox or even leave some comments because by this way Bloggers like me are encourage to continue what we are doing here in the Blogosphere. Have a safe New Year guys!!

My own kind of SEASON'S GREETINGS since I'm an avid fan of these three Radio Stations here in MANILA back in the 80s namely XB102, BM105. and NU107. YUP!! It's the same greetings I made last year. I would like to THANK everyone who visits this little blog of mine and of course who reads all my Blogposts which I always make sure that It would be very interesting for all of you. YUP!! It's not that easy to Blog because in my part I have to conceptualize every Blogpost and make sure that every texts and pictures to be included are all part of the whole thing. Of course, you guys continue to inspire me to blog here on "The Doctor Is In" up to 2009 and maybe beyond. I hope I'll always be in the Blogosphere. This SEASON of LOVE, JOY, and GIVING, may all of you have all the Blessings in Life. If you think you have problems in life just count your blessings and look around you maybe you'll just see that you are unique and still lucky with your present situation. If you have something to share, then share. It's nice to touch people's lives while we still exist here in our lovely world. PEACE, UNITY, HOPE for all mankind I may say!! HAPPY CHRISTMAS guys!! CHRISTMAS ON THE ROCKS!!

It's CHRISTMAS ON THE ROCKS!!

It was a few weeks before CHRISTMAS 1994 when 90s Legendary Radio LA 105.9ROCK promoted this PINOY Christmas Compilation album on air. It was then made available on Record Bars which made 1994 Christmas Pinoy Alternative Rock Spirit very alive and kicking. YEEEBAAAH!! This was the time when the PINOY ALTERNATIVE ROCK Scene was still booming here in the PHILIPPINES. PINOY BAND SHANGHAIED's version of "LITTLE DRUMMER BOY" was the first song I heard over at LA105. This song was also played on NU107 that time so I guess It would be the first Christmas Hit on this compilation. This compilation was produced by ED FORMOSO for IBA MUSIC which was a subdivision of the main record company who released it which was VIVA RECORDS. The Production Manager was Joey Formoso and the Supervising Producer was Fred Samantela. If we are going to zoom in on the album art packaging then there was Juliet Nanola-Fetalvero for Art Direction and of course that great cover illustration which became the Trademark of "CHRISTMAS ON THE ROCKS" was by Egai Cantuba. Cool drawing of a Hippy guy wearing Red and Green dress. The Executive Producer was Ricky Del Rosario. So why did I mention these guys? Well, just to give them credit of their creative work because I really love this Pinoy Christmas Compilation and up until now the Songs here never did ran out of style. I still listen to them!! The bands here are very talented musicians indeed but unfortunately none of them right now are in the current PINOY ROCK scene anymore. I'm talking about the Original Bands per se.


I immediately bought the Cassette Tape of this once it was released back then and It was really overplayed on my Tape Deck, Walkman and Car Stereo. He He he!! It was only Christmas 1998 when I finally decided to buy the CD when I saw It still available at SM CUBAO at a much lower price. Hmmmp!! Price Catch I may say because I know some friends of mine who wanted to buy my original copy of this great PINOY CHRISTMAS CD recently. Of course, I decline because this is indeed "Out Of Print" and "Hard To Find" already. I consider It treasures both my worn-out cassette tape format and my ever reliable Compact Disc which I still play every Christmas Season since then. SULIT TALAGA!! I was able to find time to UPLOAD the entire CD for you guys to have a copy and play it on CHRISTMAS DAY. Like PEPE SMITH would say"ROCK AND ROLL"!! So KABAYANS just ENJOY THE MUZIC!!

After the success of the Pinoy Rock compilation entitled "A DOZEN ALTERNATIVES" in 1994, here is another DOZEN PINOY ALTERNATIVE ROCK BANDS this time singing you some Christmas Carols which includes some Original Compositions, Classic Filipino Traditional Christmas Carols, and some band's version of Foreign Christmas Songs that would definitely make your season bright and merry. My ultimate favorite here is SANDUGO's "PASKO NG MAHIRAP, PASKO NG MAYAMAN". My brother and I use to sing this together back then while strumming our acoustic guitar. Wheeew!! Great Memories!! I also love DJ ALVARO's Pilipino version of "SILENT NIGHT". YUP!! Coming from her success on her hit single "Ang Tipo Kong Lalaki" you would hear her sing this Christmas Song. Naaah!! Hindi na siya "Medyo Bastos" tulad ng tipo niyang lalaki. Ha Ha Ha!! Of course, the classic "ANG PASKO AY SUMAPIT" arranged this time by ANG GRUPONG PENDONG will rock your Christmas KABAYAN. PENDONG KALAS? So where's the bald guy? He He He!!



Here's a photo of HALF LIFE HALF DEATH courtesy of ALFIE MELLA the lead vocalist of the band. Together with HLHD was ANG GRUPONG PENDONG when they were promoting this great compilation on the Legendary GMA Channel 7 show "GMA SUPERSHOW" hosted by GERMAN MORENO back in DECEMBER 1994 few days before CHRISTMAS.

There were also series of Concerts entitled "CHRISTMAS ON THE ROCKS" and the recent one was held last year DECEMBER 14, 2007 at ERMITA MANILA.

What's up DjDocT? What's a MASH-UP? Well, just lifting from my good friend DjDocT's Vinyl 80's blogsite: A MASHUP or bootleg (also mash up and mash-up) is a song or composition created from the combination of the music from one song with the acappella from another. These songs may be considered part of the European bastard pop musical genre. A mash-up is a song created out of pieces of two or more songs, usually by overlaying the vocal track of one song seemlessly over the music track of another. Is it clear already guys? So It's just like eating MASHED POTATOES. He He He!! Last month, when I was browsing DjDocT's Blog I came to an idea why not feature him again here in this little blog of mine and this time It's very much different from the first time we featured his so-called "Once In A Blue Moon" NEW WAVE MIX. YUP!! Since he added some flavor on his blog by making some MASH-UPS aside from the usual Vinyl Rips he features.

Merry CHRISTmas or Merry CRISIS-mas?

GLOBAL RECESSION? YUP!! That's the condition that has affected everyone worldwide. Here in the PHILIPPINES, It has some SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS that is quite obvious already. Hmmp!! What's my own DIAGNOSIS? Whatever the situation of my KABAYANS, still they find their own ways to celebrate CHRISTMAS even with the crisis happening in their lives. Difficult times indeed that makes people wonder why and if how long would this last. Just the same everyone wishes to have a MERRY CHRISTMAS and whatever Trials and Tribulations that's coming up and the way to cope up is your FAITH and HOPE for a brighter future. Monetary wise, I have to get a grip of my own savings because we just don't know when this recession would end. It's still nice to save for the rainy days I guess.

So Let's Forget The Worries For A While!!

TWISTED RED CROSS

If you are the child of the 80s here in MANILA you will definitely know this Indepedent Record label called TWISTED RED CROSS or better known as T.R.C. I haven't read yet any comprehensive review of this Legendary and Controversial Underground Philippine Record Label in the Internet so I decided to make a blogpost about it. My own way of giving tribute to TRC. The Legendary Twisted Record Cross Indie Label was the brain child of TOMMY TANCHANCO, son of Marcos-era cabinet member Jesus Tanchanco. Who wouldn't forget his father's name especially during those times at school I remember as a student this popular Newspaper called "Current Events Digest" which was popularly known back then as C.E.D. wherein we have to memorize some names of government officials as part of our Social Studies Class Quizes. Of course that included names like Cesar Virata, Blas Ople...etc. Wheeeew!! Tough luck ah!! TWISTED RED CROSS record label was formed during the last quarter of 1984 by TOMMY TANCHANCO from his entrepreneural company PARALYZED BODY INC. which would be the prime mover for the Local Underground Scene here in MANILA. Good thing I was able to find a picture of Tommy in my own Vaults which I used here in my special blogpost. He He He!! Tommy was also responsible for the famous Underground Publication HERALD X which would be their promotional arm for TRC's music releases. I made a blogspost about HERALD X last year check it out by clicking the logo:

PHILTRADE at Roxas Boulevard was the main location for the "BRAVE NEW WORLD" concert series organized by Tommy in order to discover and meet other bands with no major label offerings. He decided back then that It was the right time to offer these groups to join TRC and record their compositions. That's really very supportive of him I may say!! According to him he produced these bands with his little savings and came up with TRC's first official release which was a compilation entitled "RESCUE LADDERS AND HUMAN BARRICADES" that showcased the bands he signed up for the label like BETRAYED who I personally consider as "The Grand Daddy Of Pinoy Punk". Urban Bandits, Wuds, Private Stock and others were also included on the bandlist. Definitely, a great start for this Underground Label which was only released on Cassette Tape format that would be the main type of TRC's succeeding releases. Amidst the pop-dominated FM radio dial here in MANILA, TRC releases became a stand-out among the Pinoy Underground Scene which was reflected by the harsh reality of Politics and Rebellion during those times. YUP!! These were the times of SENATOR NINOY AQUINO's assasination, The FEBRUARY SNAP ELECTIONS and the historic PHILIPPINE EDSA PEOPLE POWER REVOLUTION of 1986. Tough times indeed!!

Who would forget P.O. BOX 2304 Manila wherein bands submitted their demos for TWISTED RED CROSS? Tommy was very successful in motivating these Underground Bands to make their own compositions that would be release on the label so that they will progress on their own.

Twisted Red Cross' appeal was mainly being non-corformist to go against the norm which I think has paid off since they officially released 17 cassette tapes under their label. Though, THIRD WORLD CHAOS and THE PRIVATE STOCK were considered as coming from their list too, the discography TRC numbering was not indicated on their release. . Who would forget TRC's ordeal with the International Red Cross because of molesting the Red Cross Logo.

I wonder what ROSA ROSAL's opinion about this issue. Btw, to those who aren't familiar with Rosa Rosal she is an award winning Filipino Actress who joined the Philippine Red Cross and became Board of Governors of the said institution. Well, for me, ROSA ROSAL is the symbol of the PHILIPPINE NATIONAL RED CROSS.

I was able to buy four cassette tapes from the series back then and regretted swapping two of them just to get some materials but the deal didn't push through because I was hoping to get a copy of RP's second album but to no avail. Nevertheless, I was able to complete the digitized TRC Series last 2004 with some help from people from the underground. He He He!! I was also able to borrow some original TRC tapes so that I could have a colored photocopy of the their covers.

Well, here it goes TWISTED RED CROSS' releases back in the 80s. Some of them were re-issued in the early 90s.

I personally wanted to preserve the original tracklisting and so I decided to divide them into Side A and B, or Side 1 and 2, or what was just indicated on these cassette tapes.

This was the first and only album from the first Filipino punk band ever which was released both on VINYL and CASSETTE TAPE formats.Tommy Tanchanco of the TRC label and the "Brave New World" movement was the band's guitarist. Their LP is considered as the only PINOY PUNK Vinyl Record ever issued here in the PHILIPPINES. Recently this LP was sold at e-bay with a wapping cost of Php 15,000.00. WOW!!
